When a character dies, death messaging is broadcast to the entire game announcing the character's death. This messaging is sent to the Deaths Window, if open, or to the Story Window if the Death Window is not open. Certain holidays or events will also offer themed death messaging. Death messaging is enabled by default, but it can be disabled via FLAG or SET SilenceDeath ON to prevent broadcasting it to the game.

Standard Death Messages

As part of Hot Summer Nights 2015, new death messaging was introduced to give insight into where individuals died. Previously, the only unique death message location was isolated to the Rift.

Death Customizations

Death messaging customizations can be unique or otherwise different than standard messaging when a character dies in a given realm. Pre-written death messaging is available at various festivals, pay events, and at Bayview Villa on Mist Harbor. Death messaging options are managed via the CUSTOM verb. Fully custom death messaging is a delayed service when the player is writing their own. Death customizations override the default messaging for a given realm. Death messaging must be enabled ON in FLAG/SET in order to be visible.

Death message customizations are a single line. They always include the character's name.

Examples of death messaging include the following from options available at Rumor Woods:

Looks like time's run out for {Character}.

{Character} forgot how important it is to keep the blood inside her body.

Sigh. {Character} died again.

Narrator: {Character}, in fact, could not handle it.

Looks like {Character} just lost a bet with the Arkati again. Hope Lorminstra's in a good mood!

{Character} has been smashed beneath a pile of her own books. Reading is dangerous!

{Character} is either being melodramatic or she's dead.

Additional examples of pre-written death messaging can be viewed in the character customizations category.
