The dark vysan is a peculiar beast, dapple gray and extremely bloated with gas to the point that it can float from place to place. Its appendages extend straight out from its rotund body, and its head resembles an overturned kettle. Afraid of bright light, it prefers to inhabit underground passageways, moving slowly from room to room in search of food and treasure.

Other information

Although found in the cemetery area near Ta'Vaalor, they are not undead.

Vysans are immune to fire.

They have a chance of a very powerful cold flare if they land a hit. This flare can have continued flareups for several rounds. An example of a dark vysan's cold flare:

A dark vysan pounds at you with its fist!
  AS: +54 vs DS: +47 with AvD: +43 + d100 roll: +95 = +125
... and hits for 14 points of damage!
Stomach shot lands with a hollow *thump*.
A dark vysan's touch brings the chill of death!
  ... 30 points of damage!
Freezing blast opens a gaping hole in your chest!

Behind the Scenes

These were originally known as "dark wisplings." Wisplings were the weakest form of elemental in Rolemaster, which is the relevance of their flares. They were most likely supposed to be weak nether elementals, and their presence was unnatural. They pre-date the "Describe" verb by a few years, giving rise to the misleading creature description. Wyrdlings are essentially the same concept.

These are not considered extraplanar beings for system purposes in GemStone IV. They would have been what are now considered 1st Echelon elementals.
