Hunting strategies

Roa'ters are infamous for their burrow attack. This attack causes the roa'ter to plunge into the ground and follow you around, until it eventually bursts forth directly under one's feet. This usually causes a severe wound, and many times death if it hits a vital area. Yet, because they are famous for the treasure in their boxes, many people find it worth the risk to hunt them. Casting Minor Sanctuary (213) or Song of Peace (1011) and waiting for the roa'ter to surface is a safe way to avoid being attacked if you see them burrow.

Roa'ters cannot be stunned. They are sometimes knocked to the ground by attacks, but they can still execute their burrow attack while "prone". Roa'ters have very high perception, and may execute its burrow attack even if you are hidden.

Roa'ters never stay in a room for more than one turn if there are no characters in it, and they will often roam from room to room. If you swing a weapon relatively fast, you might find it suitable to attack a roa'ter just as it enters and quickly flee before it can counter.

Be warned that roa'ters can execute a burrowing attack if it spawns in the same room as you. This is particularly dangerous because there is no imminent warning; it spawns as if it had just finished the maneuver.

Roa'ters also have a maneuver where they will eat an adventurer. To escape from the roa'ter's stomach, attack the stomach wall with a dagger or have a friend handy to rescue the. No casting can be done inside the belly. The motions, phrases and thoughts needed for spell casting are too intricate to be performed while being digested. Adventurers may, however, use a gold ring to escape a roa'ter's belly.

Other information

The factors contributing to the burrow attack are level, profession bonuses, Mobility (618) and Prayer (313) spells, encumbrance penalty, DEX/AGI/WIS bonuses, armor maneuver penalties and a prone/sitting penalty. Unlike many other maneuver attacks, Dodge, Combat Maneuvers, and the defender's Stance do not come into play.

[The Belly of the Beast]
Choked with an incomprehensible stench, the air inside the stomach is thick and moist, the foulness pervading the organ so condensed it sticks in the back of the throat. Underfoot, spongy tissue periodically contracts, roiling like a living sea, and is sopped in slick, reeking bile, which makes standing a challenge. The fleshy ceiling above secretes a viscous acid that flows to coat the walls of the stomach like caustic phlegm. You also see the roa'ter's stomach wall.

[Castle Varunar, Outer Ward]
A large killing field opens up before you. The castle builders must have had defense on their minds when they created this area between the inner and outer castle walls. Tattered bits of armor and scores of broken arrows litter the large dirt yard. You also see a roa'ter and a rotting corpse.
