Synopsis
See Part 1 of this night here!
The trial of the Rooks comes to a head as it's time to call the final witnesses, though they're not defendants. First, Mayor Thadston calls Samfelt! He wishes to know how he came to know of and join the Rooks, then why he brought what he did to Elidal.
Samfelt says he deserted his post in the Imperial Navy and the longboat he took was crushed against the cliffs. The Rooks found him washed up ashore and Casiphia brought him to a healer's tent. He gave them the name "Tolmis," which he had already been using abord The Shiver after he was arrested for hooliganism in Tamzyrr, which he says he didn't commit, but presented with an option to serve as a conscript in the Bluewater Brigade instead, which he took.
Samfelt says Casiphia asked him to be a spy in the new barony; Thadston asks if the others agreed; Samfelt says he's wearing the clothes they gave him; Thadston asks if they helped him plot that idea; Samfelt says it was Casiphia's idea and she came to the call with the others when it was presented to everyone. He passed information about the settlers to Casiphia as he learned more about plans for expansion and trade, as well as when and where caravans would leave and arrive.
Thadston asks if Samfelt helped them get the maps; Samfelt says the maps and markers weren't his, but some of the information that led to them being accurate came from him. After seeing them, he went to Elidal and gave him everything he knew; Elidal thanked him, pardoned him, and asked him to work with the Mayor of Wehnimer's Landing to bring Casiphia to justice--so Samfelt gave Thadston the password and location of Mother's Den.
Thadston asks what Samfelt believed the Rooks intended to do with the maps; he says Casiphia was hostile toward anyone from the Empire, felt certain she would have had him killed if he wanted nothing more to do with being her spy, and suspects Casi wouldn't have spared the settlers but can't speak for the others. He says she'd already made the maps prior to confirming routes with him, but it's also possible she created the markers based on what he told her. He doesn't know the mind of every Rook and their guilt might only be by association; he can't speak to other possible crimes.
Thadston asks if it's possible other organizations built maps from Samfelt's organization; Samfelt says it's possible others are getting the same information, as, for example, he doesn't know who Commander Sablo speaks with.
Thadston asks if the Rooks had discussed plans of hurting others with Samfelt; he says Casiphia did when she asked him to look at the maps, right before he went to Elidal and Thadston.
Barrister Jeshiah follows up and asks Samfelt if he lied when he dedicated himself to the Navy and ran, then lied to Bodohal. Samfelt says he lied to the guards in Tamzyrr about his name when they arrested him for hooliganism and continued to lie about his name when he part of Bodohal's crew and a Rook. Jeshiah says then Samfelt lied to Elidal, so it's possible he's a liar right now too. He says he has no further questions he'll get truth to.
Jeshiah calls for his last witness, Casiphia--who's brought in by Lady Alendrial pushing a wheeled chair. Dark grey veins run around much of Casiphia's skin. Thadston starts to approach, but Casiphia signals him to stop and speaks of history:
- Jastatos 5116, supplying blood marble prayerbeads so defenders could infiltrate Chaston Griffin's cleansing camps to rescue prisoners and destroy the camps
- Eoantos 5116, fighting alongside Landing defenders, Solhaven defenders, Vornavian and Hendoran forces to end Chaston Griffin in Talador
- Fashanos 5117, providing intelligence on the outpost's missing Sir Michol and Naimorai Kestrel, who was spotted arguing with him and would turn out to be his murderer
- Olaesta 5117, providing intelligence that led to the arrest of Carenos, wanted for murdering citizens while seeking revenge on Cyph Kestrel
- Koaratos 5119, defending Shanty Town against Raznel
- Eoantos 5119, coordinating a trap with Thadston and Casiphia to lure and capture Disean, who was controlled by Raznel
Casiphia says the list continues on and the Rooks have always taken to the streets and rooftops to defend against common enemies: Chaston, Dennet, Raznel, Vlashandra, The Knave, Tyrrax, the Ember Vale reivers, the Wraith. Chandrellia takes it upon herself to go down and offer Casi a drink of water, but Alendrial and Casi seem to indicate she doesn't need it.
Casi says you'll find as many Rook arrows in the corpses of enemies as the sword wounds of Gryphons, but the Rooks don't need great titles, golden spurs, or their names in tomes. Their heroes aren't smaller and their hearts not lesser, but even though paths may veer in different directions, they can still all lead to home.
She says the Rooks agents of a darker time are dead and gone: Drangell, Rysus, and soon Ordlyn will join their ranks-- yet here we are watching a sham trial of predominant Rooks who have been critical defenders of this town. Casi says many cling to the past and cry that the only good Rook is a dead Rook, and many of them are the same who will say the Empire shouldn't be judged by its rogues and we should embrace the new barony and believe only benevolence will follow.
Casi asks why isn't that ideal applied to the Rooks when they've changed: still operating in shadows, but not trading in blood. She tells Thadston no one has said the quiet part aloud: he didn't raid the Den to punish Kayse, Kiyna, Leafiara, Drektor, Chandrellia, Pukk, or anyone else, but because he wanted to find her, protect her, and save her--because all Thadston knows is trying to save people, and often, all he's known because of that is loss.
Casi says he hanged citizens before they were tried and calls it Walkar levels of negligence because he was mad she escaped when they didn't. She says he should have been re-elected easily, but he can't continue to save everyone and it prevents him from even saving himself. She's not Saraphene (his deceased wife), beautiful but common; she's only one of those, and he can't tuck her away to keep her safe. They can't be together the way either would want...
...so Casi wants him to accept fully what she intends to do tonight without fighting her wishes or trying to alter them. She wants Thadston to focus on his life ahead and not sacrifice himself. She begins to cough, so Alendrial gets permission to continue for her.
Alendrial says it's hard for Casiphia to speak and the poison is growing, but she's agreed to allow Magister Enisius' magic research team to try to find a way to cure her--as well as surrender and take upon herself full blame for every charge levied against others throughout this trial. After Casi is restored to health, she'll face the consequences and spend the rest of her days in prison, but Alendrial proposed additional terms to help ensure her surrender and agreement for healing since she knows Casi is important to Thadston and each side must give in true diplomacy. She says the deal became easier given the results of the mayoral campaign.
First, Alendrial will be appointing Beldrin as the Steward of the Guilds in her first act as Mayor, a past town councilor who was unfairly targeted by Casiphia under suspicions of ties to the ways of Drangell and Rysus. They've since learned that to be untrue and can't think of anyone better for the position: due to his open membership within the Brotherhood of Rooks, he'll ensure that the Rooks and many others get a real voice in the affairs of the town's merchant activity and trade to ensure that the Darkstone Bay Consortium no longer rules with a heavy hand.
Alendrial says Beldrin can be the eyes and ears for this "Parliament of Rooks" and might establish what many have tried to accomplish: a channel out of the shadows for the Rooks to exist and operate in their own manner, but with true representation and voice within the leadership of Wehnimer's Landing without hiding or secrets. She says Thadston will accept the terms not because she's asked him, but because Casiphia has.
However, Alendrial tells Thadston that if he continues to persecute the other Rooks against Casi's wishes, then she (Alendrial) will see the currently unannounced charges against Thadston brought to full light and pursued to the fullest extent of Landing laws. If he ends the charade, her second act as Mayor will be pardoning Thadston. She doesn't expect nor want his answer tonight, but whatever he decides, Casiphia will be taken care of, seen to a long life, and justice will still be served.
Thadston says the town for this "utter madness" with Rooks at the table. He looks for a chair to grab until Judge Manard shouts him down, then Thadston tells everyone to do what they must and wish since it's not his to decide anymore before marching off.
Jeshiah asks if we won; Alendrial says if we're lucky, everyone will win for Wehnimer's. She thanks Manard and looks forward to working with him, then wheels Casiphia away. Chandy asks Jeshiah if she and the others are released from charges; Jeshiah says the Judge will decide the outcome, perhaps in a few days.

Cause I Still Believe In Miracles
See Part 1 of this night here!
Jeshiah asks, "Well, your final witness before mine?"
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Thadston.
Thadston says, "I'm waiting on Samfelt."
Leafiara asks, "So... have I been kicked out while I was gone?"
Vaemyr says, "So... Samfelt then Casi I think."
Emissary Samfelt just stumbled in, flailing his arms wildly while trying to right himself!
Speaking to Leafiara, Kayse asks, "Kicked out of what?"
Leafiara says, "It's fine if so. Greater good."
Speaking to Leafiara, Chandrellia says, "No we didnt Samfelt you."
Samfelt asks, "Oh, sorry! Am I late?"
Thadston says, "No."
Speaking approvingly to Leafiara, Mauss says, "Only hand on the tiller... was yers."
Nyaria quietly says, "Comes to court, drunk.... fascinating."
Jeshiah glares at Samfelt.
Samfelt bows to Thadston.
Jeshiah mutters samfelted.
Samfelt turns to face Jeshiah.
Samfelt gawks at Jeshiah.
Thrassus says, "I don't think he is drunk, just in a hurry."
Evia says, "Can't say as I blame him."
Leafiara acknowledges, "It is past three in the morning."
Thadston says, "Samfelt..."
Samfelt asks, "Mayor Thadston. Lord Elidal said my services could be of use to Wehnimer's Landing tonight?"
Thadston says, "Tell me..briefly sweet Kai..."
Nyaria quietly says, "Right, i dont know drunk."
Thadston asks, "But please tell me how you came first to know of the Rooks, join them, and then why you brought what you did to Elidal?"
Samfelt nods once.
Speaking pointedly to Leafiara, Mauss asks, "Ain' that half da point??"
Speaking to Leafiara, Tayler says, "You should write a book, you halfway did, down there."
Samfelt says, "That is quite an interesting tale."
Samfelt says, "My being found by some of them was by chance, and was to my great fortune at the time. How I ended up on that beach is a bit of a story."
Thadston says, "I hope it's a quick one."
Speaking to Missoni, Perigourd says, "Not from what I've heard, but then there's been a lot of it going both ways."
Samfelt recounts, "I deserted my post in the Imperial Navy, and abandoned the crew aboard The Shiver, just before the Rooks found me washed up on the shore to the northwest. The longboat I took was crushed against the cliffs by a swell, as the tide was coming in faster than I had expected."
Speaking to herself, Kiyna says, "Quiet, scarab..."
Samfelt continues, "They took me in, and Mother... Casiphia had me brought to a healer's tent where I was nursed back to health. I wasn't here very long before Bodohal started looking for me. I had kept the name I gave them when I was conscripted into the Navy for a crime I didn't comit in Tamzyrr. Tolmis. I was arrested for what was it?..."
Samfelt continues, "Hooliganism was the charge. And they said I was going to fight in the Conquest Fete, and then an officer presented the option of serving as a conscript in the Bluewater Brigade instead. So I went to the sea... aboard The Shiver."
Jeshiah glares at Samfelt.
Tikba mildly says, "What an unfortunate miscarriage of justice."
Chandrellia asks, "Aahh so hes a deserter, isnt that treason?"
Samfelt says, "After being in the Rooks briefly, I was asked to be a spy in the new Barony."
Thadston asks, "By the Rooks?"
Thadston asks, "They asked you that?"
Speaking to Chandrellia, Raelee says, "Legally? No."
Kayse says, "I thought he came up with that idea."
Samfelt says, "Casiphia."
Speaking dryly to himself, Mauss remarks, "Them oars ain' gon' yank themselves."
Speaking to Raelee, Chandrellia says, "Interesting."
Samfelt asks, "That is her name, yes?"
Thadston asks, "Did the others agree?"
Speaking to Chandrellia, Raelee says, "Desertion is a charge in its own right."
Thadston asks, "Leafiara? Pukk? Chandrellia? Drektor? Kayse? Kiyna?"
Samfelt says, "I am wearing the clothes they gave me."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Vaemyr says, "Not sure that deserting to prevent yourself from pirating constitutes a crime of any sort."
Thadston asks, "Did any of them help you plot that idea?"
Speaking to Raelee, Chandrellia says, "Oh I ment him abandoning his post on teh SHiver, not the Hoolaginism charge."
Geijon asks, "Punishment for treason is death?"
Speaking to Geijon, Tayler asks, "How do you kill that which won't die?"
Vaemyr says, "Leaving the Shiver was an honorable act."
Samfelt says, "It was Casiphia's idea, I came to the call with the others when the idea was presented to everyone."
Speaking to Tayler, Geijon says, "Ignore it til it withers away."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Chandrellia says, "It was still his post."
Samfelt says, "The same place I brought you."
Thadston clenches his jaw.
Thadston nods.
Thadston says, "...continue."
Samfelt says, "I passed information about the settlers on to Casiphia as I learned more about their plans for expansion and trade in the region. I learned when and where the caravans were going to leave and arrive, and I could only guess this was passed on to other Rooks as well."
Speaking to Geijon, Tayler says, "What if it's a reaaaaally big elemental."
Geijon says, "Those enemies are obvious."
Kayse comments, "Speculation."
Thrassus asks, "So he should have stayed on a pirate ship masquerading as Imperial Navy?"
Speaking to Chandrellia, Vaemyr says, "Yes, and sometimes, you need to break the official rules to do what's right. Because there's no other way. I would think you'd understand that quite well."
Tikba mildly says, "Samfelt did not describe it as a pirate ship in court."
Thadston asks, "So you helped get them the maps?"
Speaking to Vaemyr, Chandrellia says, "Hhmm guess the Rooks and Samfelt have more in common then people see, yet we get charged."
Raelee says, "If the Shiver had not turned to pirating, to leave without permission would be grounds for a desertion charge."
Samfelt says, "I may have had something to do with them being accurate."
Raelee says, "A treason charge would also require a direct act against the Empire - not just fleeing."
Samfelt says, "The maps were not made by me. The markers were not mine. But some of the information that led to them may have come from me."
Speaking to Raelee, Chandrellia says, "Ahhh ok thank you for carifying that Magister, I learned something new today then."
Samfelt says, "After seeing the maps, I went to Lord Elidal."
Tayler says, "We also helped that ship sink to the bottom of the bay, so I suppose he could technically claim he was shipwrecked and seeking asylum."
Samfelt says, "I did not want Casiphia to realize I had planned to tell him, so I did what I agreed to do for her."
Samfelt says, "When I gave Lord Elidal everything I knew, and told him the truth..."
Samfelt says, "I fully expected him to have me killed then and there, but he did not. He thanked me for the information and granted me a pardon. In turn, he asked me to work with the Mayor of Wehnimer's Landing to bring Casiphia to justice. I told Mayor Thadston the phrase to speak and where."
Samfelt nods to Judge Manard.
Kiyna says, "He already knew where. A year ago."
Samfelt says, "And that was the last night I was a Rook."
Samfelt nods at Thadston.
Tayler says, "To be fair the "Where" was fairly obvious, the passcode was the tricky part, or at least, it seemed like it was."
Thadston nods.
Thadston says, "I see..."
Nyaria quietly says, "Oooh now i get that nickname."
Speaking to Leafiara, Chandrellia says, "Being Samfelted."
Evia says, "Trite."
Thadston asks, "What do you believe the Rooks intended to do with the maps?"
Speaking to Tayler, Kiyna says, "Thadston could have rendered the panel to splinters within seconds if he'd wanted to."
Speaking to Tayler, Vaemyr says, "There's very very little chance that Thadston's arms couldn't break that door down if he wanted to. I've seen him punch a Man'o'war and cause the thing to explode."
Rasson says, "If any of them are rangers the maps will just help them get lost."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Tayler says, "Perhaps he didn't want to sink the merchant establishment."
Speaking to Tayler, Chandrellia says, "Why not, its owned by Casi."
Samfelt recounts, "She was hostile toward anyone from the Empire. She hates them. I am from the Empire. If I refused to give her any information, and revealed that I wanted nothing more to do with being her spy I am certain she would have had me killed."
Thrassus says, "I again argue that desperation caused him to take the actions he did."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Tayler says, "Tax revenue."
Samfelt says, "There was even some talk about sabotaging their walls during the harsh snows, but I admit that I quickly reconsidered it after suggesting the notion. The walls we built became a harbor and sanctuary for the settlers, and I was now one of them too."
Speaking to Thrassus, Vaemyr says, "I agree."
Thadston nods.
Samfelt says, "I suspect she would have not spared them. I can't speak for the others."
Irval says, "Sabotaging their walls after requesting stone for our own..."
Tikba mildly says, "Yes, since we refused to abduct Casiphia, he saw no other course."
Speaking to Kayse, Chandrellia asks, "I dont recall hearing about any of this do you?"
Thadston asks, "Is it safe to assume, the maps they created based off of information obtained by you and from you...was not likely to have fallen into anyone else's hands? But just their own?"
Speaking to Irval, Kiyna says, "He's talking about Casiphia. None of what he's talking about was our discussion."
Samfelt says, "Casiphia had already made these maps prior to confirming the routes with me. But it is also very possible that she created the markers herself based on what I told her."
Rasson says, "Sounded like he said it was his idea."
Irval asks, "Isnt that the Rook leader?"
Samfelt says, "I am not sure how skilled she is with maps. Perhaps someone helped her."
Samfelt glances at a narrow stairway.
Speaking to Irval, Kiyna says, "Thadston is the Landing leader, and I don't agree with much of what he says and does, too."
Speaking to Kiyna, Chandrellia says, "He doesnt care, it only gives him a reason to try and point fingers, but what he fails to realize is that when you point one finger at someone you have three more pointing back at you."
Vaemyr says, "Well, Casi is gonna be here next, so we'll see what she says."
Samfelt says, "I do not know the mind of each and every Rook. Their guilt may only be by association to her in these plots against Darkstone. I can't speak regarding any other plans they have made in the past, or crimes against Wehnimer's Landing."
Samfelt glances at Jeshiah.
Thadston says, "Right but..."
Thadston asks, "Is it possible other organizations built maps from your information?"
Thadston squints.
Mongur raspily says, "So Thadston hang all Rook on whim."
Samfelt says, "It is possible others are getting the same information I am."
Mongur raspily says, "He not even know."
Thadston squints.
Speaking admiringly to Leafiara, Mauss asks, "See how fast he got rid o' you? And not 'im?"
Thadston asks, "Had the Rooks discussed with you any plans at all of hurting others?"
Samfelt says, "I am not Commander Sablo, for example, and I don't know who he speaks with."
Vaemyr says, "Otherwise, could the Remnants have spys in the imperial camp? possibly."
Speaking to Mongur, Leafiara says, "If he had asked what a Whimweaver is, I was going to tell him he should know since he's been a better one than me at times with the hangings and the quick pardon of Casiphia."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Perigourd says, "Likely."
Samfelt says, "Yes, Casiphia did when she asked me to look at the maps. I went to Lord Elidal and then to you, when she called the others to their den."
Missoni tiredly says, "At this point I expect there is at least one spy everywhere."
Jeshiah squirms.
Speaking to Missoni, Vaemyr says, "On all sides prolly."
Thadston nods.
Speaking to Missoni, Perigourd says, "I spy on you often."
Thadston says, "So there was discussions of violence. Thank you."
Thadston nods at Samfelt.
Thadston says, "I have no further questions."
Speaking dryly to Perigourd, Missoni says, "You cannot help yourself."
Thadston nods at Jeshiah.
Speaking to himself, Perigourd says, "No, apparently not."
Thrassus says, "It's wise to expect that always."
Jeshiah turns around.
Speaking dryly to Missoni, Mauss says, "I sure wonner what the spies expect."
I Swear I've Seen a A Few
Jeshiah exclaims, "Samfelt!"
Jeshiah says, "...if that's your real name."
Jeshiah snickers.
Samfelt nods at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah asks, "....no really, is it?"
Samfelt smirks at Jeshiah.
Evia says, "Yeah Chestnut."
Samfelt says, "My name is Samfelt Cobbleman."
Samfelt nods once.
Jeshiah says, "Yeah okay..."
Jeshiah says, "Anyway..."
Jeshiah says, "So just to help me understand this a bit..."
Samfelt agrees with Jeshiah.
Jeshiah says, "You lied when you dedicated yourself to the Navy and ran...."
Jeshiah asks, "...then lied to Bodohal right?"
Kiyna says, "Then lied to us."
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Samfelt.
Kiyna says, "But he's telling the truth now, you can be sure of that."
Kippe says, "Lying is essential to do what he did."
Jeshiah says, "I mean the answer is yes, so it should be a quick thing to say."
Mongur raspily says, "Sure sounds life it ta meh."
Jeshiah nods.
Jeshiah snickers.
Mauss mutters, "What a garbage "trial". Less ask the defendants to help them "unnerstand" things better, and double-check their real names."
Samfelt says, "I lied to the guards in Tamzyrr about my name when they arrested me for hooliganism."
Geijon says, "Payment comes in th' currency you deal in."
Samfelt nods at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah says, "Right."
Jeshiah asks, "Then did you lie about anything to Bodohal?"
Samfelt says, "I continued to lie about my name, even when I was a Rook."
Jeshiah says, "Now now don't skip ahead. I'm trying to build a..."
Samfelt says, "Yes, also when I was part of Bodohal's crew."
Mauss continues, "At three in da mornin'."
Jeshiah looks down at a scroll in his hand.
Jeshiah says, "Pattern."
Jeshiah nods.
Samfelt asks, "Right. That I lie?"
Jeshiah says, "So then you lied to the Rooks..."
Samfelt stares at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah says, "Then you lied to Elidal..."
Samfelt glances at Jeshiah and folds his arms over his chest.
Jeshiah says, "So it's possible you're a liar right now too."
Jeshiah asks, "Isn't it?"
Jeshiah says, "Don't answer. It's probably a LIE."
Thrassus says, "That's rather leading of a question."
Jeshiah says, "I have no further questions."
Samfelt smiles quietly to himself.
Kiyna says, "Coming on a bit strong, but he makes the point."
Jeshiah says, "None I'll get truth to."
Thadston says, "Ignore him Samfelt."
Thadston says, "He's forgotten the real heroes who pulled him out shadow muck and restored his eyes."
Thrassus says, "If that's all he has, it's not much of a strategy."
Thadston says, "Thanks for your help."
Thadston nods at Samfelt.
Samfelt nods at Thadston.
Samfelt bows.
Leafiara says, "All that matters is whether the Judge ignores him or doesn't, since there's no jury here."
Emissary Samfelt just went through a modwir arch.
And the Time Will Surely Come When You Can See My Point of View
Jeshiah clears his throat.
Jeshiah says, "My final witness should um...be here shortly."
Kelfyr says, "I did not bring enough liqour."
Speaking quietly to himself, Mauss mutters, "Of course."
Tayler says, "A problem easily solved."
Kelfyr says, "Thank you."
Speaking amusedly to Kelfyr, Leafiara says, "Oh, no wonder you and Stormy... I'd heard similar things from her so often."
Thrassus says, "It would be wise to keep a clear head anyway, in case the Remnants decide to strike."
Speaking to Thrassus, Kelfyr says, "If they strike, the liquor will dull the pain of my body parts ending up on two different levels of this building."
Kiyna says, "There are many in this room the Remnants despise. Rook and otherwise. Vigilance would be prudent."
Mauss begs, "Someone gimme a drink."
Jeshiah asks, "Mad we could find her and you couldn't?"
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Thadston.
Thadston glares.
Vaemyr says, "I mean... he certainly isn't happy..."
The double doors of the Assembly Room open and two figures emerge from the hallway. Lady Alendrial comes into view first, pushing a woman in a crude wheeled chair. The woman has curly, bluish-black hair that is arranged into a twisted roll. Her oval face bears several dark grey veins along the skin, which match the ones weaving along her neck and arms. A heavy brown blanket covers her lap.
Alendrial nods.
Speaking dryly to Vaemyr, Raelee asks, "Is anyone?"
Chandrellia says, "No no no."
Thrassus says, "Ah, she's in worse shape than I thought."
Leafiara asks, "...Epochxin?"
Vaemyr says, "She can't walk anymore."
Casiphia smiles weakly.
Thadston glances at Casiphia.
Thadston moves forward a few steps.
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "It's very similar yes, I thought that when I saw the blue veins before."
Casiphia raises her hand, silver veins covering her flesh. Thadston stops.
Casiphia glances at a narrow stairway.
Speaking cautiously to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "And yet she isn't aging quickly, at least... I think."
Alendrial says, "Go ahead."
Alendrial nods at Casiphia.
Leafiara mutters, "What in the world *is* this poison."
Speaking to Leafiara, Raelee states, "Fascinating."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "Wish she'd let us at least try to find a cure."
Casiphia weakly says, "Jastatos, 5116. The Rooks provide a supply of blood marble prayerbeads so that the defenders of Wehnimer's Landing can infiltrate Chaston Griffin's cleansing camps and rescue half-elves and destroy the camps."
Kiyna says, "I'll get that bastard Ordlyn. For Casiphia. For Rian. For all of them."
Tikba says, "We must try to answer that before they strike again."
Geijon says, "We refused them if I recall right."
Casiphia coughs.
Casiphia weakly says, "Eoantos, 5116. The Rooks fight side by side with Landing defenders, Solhaven defenders, Vornavian and Hendoran forces to bring the final fight to Chaston Griffin in Talador before its fall."
Thrassus says, "I don't know if she's going to make it out of this courtroom."
Casiphia slowly empties her lungs.
Casiphia weakly says, "Fashanos, 5117. The Rooks provide intelligence on the missing Sir Michol of the Hendoran Outpost and the angry woman seen arguing with him last, who would turn out to be Naimori Kestrel, his murderer."
Speaking to Irval, Chandrellia says, "Hostory lesson, listen carefuly."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I think her history lesson is going to be even more impressive than yours."
Kayse thoughtfully says, "Oh, yes. Sir Michol..."
Casiphia smiles at Thadston.
Casiphia weakly says, "Olaesta, 5117. The Rooks provide intelligence on the hunting schedule of Carenos, wanted for the murder of Landing citizens while seeking revenge on Cyph Kestrel. The information shared leads to the criminal's arrest."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "I wasn't going for overall history, just mine... defending as an individual, not an organization."
Casiphia coughs.
Casiphia weakly says, "Koaratos, 5119. The Rooks defend Shanty Town against Raznel."
Casiphia weakly says, "Eoantos, 5119. The Rooks are instrumental in coordinating a trap with Thadston and myself to lure and capture Disean, who was controlled by Raznel and endangering the town and citizens."
Thadston clenches his jaw.
Geijon says, "Instrumental."
Chandrellia asks, "Does anyone have any water?"
Mauss offers Chandrellia a tumbler of mango-infused whiskey.
Chandrellia says, "No, water."
Casiphia slowly rises to her feet, dismissing Alendrial who tries to help her stand. It is not easy for her, and her knees bend twice, but she leans against the back of a bench and finally moves upright.
Leafiara says, "That was one of the three deals I've seen Thadston strike with Mother. Like I said on the balcony last time, somehow he's still outnumbering me."
Kayse pours herself a tumbler of lemon-zested water.
Kayse offers Chandrellia a tumbler of lemon-zested water.
Chandrellia accepts Kayse's lemon-zested water.
Chandrellia sighs.
Casiphia weakly says, "The list continues on. There is not a single moment in Wehnimer's Landing's history that the Rooks have not taken to the streets and rooftops to defend against our common enemies. Chaston. Dennet. Raznel. Vlashandra. The Knave. Tyrrax. The Reivers. The Wraith."
Miss Chandrellia just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Speaking to Judge Manard, Chandrellia asks, "Your honor may I offer Casi a drink of water please?"
Alendrial looks over at Chandrellia and shakes her head.
Chandrellia sighs.
Vaemyr says, "She might not even be able to drink."
Chandrellia nods once.
Casiphia smiles at Chandrellia.
Miss Chandrellia just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Leafiara says, "Poor Chandy... I don't think anything she can offer will help here. Would never stop her from trying."
Chandrellia sighs.
Casiphia weakly says, "You will find just as many Rook arrows in the corpses of their minions as you would the sword wounds of Gryphons. We just do not need the recognition of great titles, golden spurs, or names scribbled into imperial tomes. Our heart is not smaller, our heroes are not lesser. We fight, we bleed, we die. Because our paths may veer in different directions, does not mean that they do not all lead to home."
Chandrellia weeps softly, quiet tears falling from her eyes.
Casiphia weakly says, "Wehnimer's Landing is our home as much as anyone else. The agents of a darker time for the Rooks are dead and gone. Drangell. Rysus. Even the remnant named Ordlyn will join those ranks soon enough. Yet here we are, watching and hearing the trial of several predominant Rooks who have become critical defenders not only of this town, but its people."
Casiphia weakly says, "It is a sham. There is no crime being charged in this trial that has not also been condoned or even conducted by a mayor now or a mayor then. Every office of higher power in this city has dabbled in the grey, then scoffs when it sometimes grows too dark for them. You cannot swim and be alarmed when you get wet."
Irval yells, "So long as they agree with you. Otherwise! Arrow!"
Thadston squints.
Speaking to Irval, Chandrellia says, "Apparaently not enough, as yer still running your doughnut hole."
Casiphia weakly says, "There are so many who cling to the past and cry out that the only good Rook is a dead Rook. Many of these people are the same ones that will tell you the Empire is not evil, and it should not be judged by the rogues of its regions. That the past is the past, and we must embrace the new Barony and believe only benevolence will follow."
One of the gathered townspeople shouts, "Let her go! She was Samfelted!"
Casiphia weakly says, "Then I say to you, why is this ideal not equally applied to the Rooks? The greatest threats within the Brotherhood have been vanquished. We are different now, our methods have changed. We may still operate in the shadows, but we do not trade in blood."
Irval says, "You guys been shouting entire time, what because im not a Rook? Im not allowed to toss out statements like the rest of the "peanut gallery"."
Leafiara says, "I didn't hear a single person shouting while I was down there."
Geijon says, "One wonders why th' Brotherhood was vanquished."
Casiphia weakly says, "No one has said the quiet part aloud Thadston. In whispers, in their looks, yes I see and hear it. But if we can all be honest for a moment, the true reason you raided the Den was not to punish Kayse, or Kiyna, or Leafiara, Drektor, Chandrellia, Pukk, or any others. You wanted to find me. You wanted to carry me off, throw walls around me to protect me and save me. Because all you know is trying to save people, and often times, all you have known because of that is loss."
Thadston clenches his jaw.
Thadston glares.
Speaking to Leafiara, Irval says, "They did."
Thrassus says, "I would argue that the actions against the Imperials specifically were dangerous to the town, in that they would likely bring about the situation that the Rooks feared."
Dergoatean says, "She's good."
Thrassus says, "The rest I have no qualms with."
Casiphia weakly says, "You violently set about hanging several citizens before they were even tried. That is Walkar level of negligence. You were mad I escaped when they did not. What has happened to you? You should have been re-elected easily. But you cannot continue to save everyone, all of the time. It prevents you from even saving yourself."
Tikba mildly asks, "What situation is that?"
Casiphia weakly says, "I am not Saraphene. She was born in your borders, beautiful but common. I am only one of those. You cannot cage me, you cannot tuck me away to keep me safe. Because of this, we will never truly be. Not in the way either of us want. Because of that, and because of what I intend to do and agree upon tonight, I want you to accept it fully. Do not fight my wishes. Do not try to alter them. You have a portion of your life still ahead of you, and you love this town and its people, even if you are not their Mayor. Focus on that. But do not sacrifice yourself in doing so."
Speaking to Tikba, Thrassus says, "Occupation."
Speaking to Thrassus, Tikba says, "We need have no fear of that. The Earl has promised it."
I Believe In Second Chances
Casiphia coughs violently and nearly falls over, but Thadston rushes to her. He grabs her, she forces half a smile, touches the metal of his arm, and then moves away from him. Alendrial helps her back into her chair.
Speaking to Tikba, Kelfyr says, "Committed to it outright."
Thrassus says, "Hrm, I would say trust but verify."
Alendrial asks, "May I continue?"
Alendrial peers quizzically at Casiphia.
Casiphia nods.
Casiphia nods.
Alendrial smiles.
Alendrial gazes with interest at a narrow stairway.
Alendrial says, "It is hard for her to speak. The poison is growing, but she has thankfully agreed to allow Enisius's magic research team to help try to find a way to cure her. Additionally, Casiphia has agreed to surrender, and take upon her full blame for the actions of the Brotherhood of Rooks and their members. Every single charge you have levied against the others over the course of these nights."
Alendrial says, "Once Casiphia is restored to better health, she will face the consequences of her crimes and spend the rest of her days in a Wehnimer's prison cell. But there were some additional terms I proposed to help ensure her surrender and her agreement for healing help. I know she is important to you, and in true diplomacy, each side must give."
Geijon says, "About what I expected."
Alendrial says, "I will admit this deal becomes much easier given the results of the mayoral campaign, and to that end it would become one of my first acts as the new Mayor."
Dergoatean asks, "Can she do that? Just sop up everyone's legal problems?"
Missoni says, "Oh, good, a deal."
Speaking to Dergoatean, Kelfyr says, "That's what's called a plea bargain."
Thrassus says, "The Judge can if he agrees to it."
Speaking to Dergoatean, Vaemyr says, "She has the pwoer to pardon in just a few days."
Speaking to Dergoatean, Leafiara says, "I... I'm not sure I even want her to, but... it's her choice, I--"
Alendrial says, "Per the agreement with Casiphia, I will be appointing Beldrin as the Steward of the Guilds. Once a town councilor in the past, he was unfairly targeted by Casiphia as being suspected of having old ties to Drangell and Rysus's way of tactics. We have since then learned this to not be the case, and we cannot think of anyone better for the position. Beldrin holds both tenure and influence in the town, and because of his open membership and rank within the Brotherhood of Rooks, he will ensure that the Rooks, and many others, get a real voice in the affairs of the town's merchant activity and trade. Currently, the Darkstone Bay Consortium rules with a heavy hand. It is time to ensure the table sits more than just one."
Evia says, "Sheeeeesh."
Thrassus says, "It's the best result for everyone."
Alendrial says, "With Beldrin as Steward of the Guilds, and being the eyes and ears for this Parliament of Rooks, if you will, it may in fact establish what so many have tried to accomplish in the past. A channel out of the shadows, a way to still exist and operate in their own manner, but with true representation and voice within the leadership of Wehnimer's Landing, without hiding or without secrets."
Thadston slowly empties his lungs.
Irval says, "Operate outside the law she means."
Alendrial says, "There will be balance. Power will not be unfairly controlled and wielded with just one group, with just one voice. Only then can we ensure true growth and prosperity when the agendas have been removed."
Chandrellia asks, "Would someone please shut him up, like maybe an arrow to an eye?"
Alendrial says, "You will accept these terms Thadston, not because I have asked you, but because she has."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Irval asks, "Can't fight your own battles?"
Alendrial says, "If you decide to continue to persecute the other Rooks against her wishes, then I will see the charges against you, which remain unannounced, brought to full light and pursued to the fullest extent of our laws. If you end this charade, my second act as Mayor will be to pardon you, giving you a full horizon of options for life after office. I do not expect your answer this night, nor do I want it. But know whatever you decide, Casiphia will be taken care of, we will see to it she draws a long life, and justice will still be served."
Speaking to Irval, Chandrellia says, "Yer not worth my breath, begone bug."
Alendrial nods.
Thrassus says, "I would extract a pledge to not act against the Barony unless agreed upon with the Marshall and the Mayor."
Thadston clenches his jaw.
Thadston looks up to the balcony.
Thadston says, "...you voted for this madness."
Kiyna says, "I certainly didn't vote for lynching."
Evia says, "Nope."
Thadston says, "This is utter madness."
Leafiara says, "As opposed to your madness, sure."
Thadston asks, "Rooks at the table?"
Thadston glances between Casiphia and Alendrial.
Kiyna says, "The Rooks were always at the table."
Stormyrain mutters, "They've always been at the table."
Tayler says, "I didn't vote for anyone standing down there."
Tikba mildly says, "Perhaps some regret that we were allowed to vote."
Thadston looks for a chair. The Judge shouts, "NO!"
A tiny black spider skitters along the staircase and down the wall, vanishing in the shadows.
Thadston clenches his jaw.
Leafiara mildly says, "Case in point."
Thadston says, "Do what you must and wish. It's not mine to decide anymore."
Mayor Thadston just marched stiffly through a modwir arch.
And That's Why I Believe In You
Jeshiah asks, "...did we win?"
Kiyna says, "Not precisely, Jeshiah..."
Leafiara says, "Hard to call it that with Casi in the condition she's in."
Thyrabos asks, "Judge has something to say, no?"
Irval yells, "Nobody won, you nut."
Alendrial says, "If we are lucky, everyone will win. For Wehnimer's."
Kiyna says, "Can they really cure her? It looks... bad."
Alendrial nods at Jeshiah.
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "We win when we save her I think."
Speaking neutrally to Kiyna, Tikba says, "We can but try."
Alendrial says, "Your Honor, a pleasure. I look forward to working with you more."
Alendrial nods to Judge Manard.
Speaking to Kiyna, Tayler says, "If she takes all of the crimes and then dies, I suppose it's more or less the same."
Alendrial wheels Casiphia out of the chamber.
Geijon says, "Alendrial seems to find ways."
Missoni agrees, "Yes, it does look very bad indeed."
Speaking to Perigourd, Kiyna says, "If you've something to say, I'd rather it were not unsaid."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I believe Enisius has those containment rooms setup already, I imagine will be a safe place, and we have a lot of expertise on that research team."
The Judge shrugs, shakes his head, and wanders off.
Speaking to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "Hopefully..."
Miss Chandrellia just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Goldstr says, "Nae sure hows I fels."
Jeshiah asks, "Did I win?"
Speaking to Jeshiah, Chandrellia asks, "So?"
Jeshiah chuckles.
Kelfyr says, "One and oh."
Leafiara says, "Well... I mean, he's the last person in the courtroom, so I guess so."
Chandrellia asks, "The Mayor never explained whats next, are we released from our charges?"
Jeshiah says, "No."
Chandrellia flails her arms about.
Jeshiah says, "The Judge will decide the outcome now."
Jeshiah says, "I would expect a few days."
Jeshiah shrugs.
Chandrellia nods at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah asks, "So...don't go far?"
Jeshiah chuckles.
Jeshiah says, "Or else I might owe them money."
One of the gathered townspeople waves a flagon of ale around and drunkenly slurs, "We're All'ooks. We're All'ooks!" as they stumble down the staircase.
Kayse laments, "A few days?"
Jeshiah says, "I think."
Chandrellia says, "Very well, I'l be waiting, and doing what I do, healing these citizens."
Herod says, "Well this has all been very interesting."
Jeshiah says, "I'm really not sure how this works sometimes."
Chandrellia nods at Jeshiah.
Miss Chandrellia just went through a modwir arch.
Jeshiah exclaims, "Goodnight!"
Kelfyr says, "Watch out for the spider."
Jeshiah just went through a modwir arch.
Leafiara yells, "Good night!"
Herod says, "From outside perspective and new coming in, this town has its work cut out for it."
Speaking quietly to herself, Raelee says, "He does not know how this works."
Speaking wryly to Herod, Leafiara says, "Always has."
Tikba uncertainly asks, "Jeshiah was responsible for ensuring your appearance?"
Speaking to Raelee, Kelfyr asks, "To be fair, do we?"
Raelee says, "I suspect the local legal code is not robust enough to cover what just occurred."
Thrassus says, "If I were Jeshiah I would consider actually attending a real existing barrister school before taking another case."
Speaking to Raelee, Vaemyr says, "It is not."
Speaking to Raelee, Vaemyr says, "It is not even close..."
Mauss exclaims, "No one will ever out-Leafi da Leafi!"
Evia says, "About as robust as tattered cloth."
Speaking to Thrassus, Missoni says, "Even just reading a book could do him a world of good."
Dergoatean says, "Well that was stirring."
Tayler says, "Alendrial sure seems to want to make enemies before she has even started her term."
Speaking to Mauss, Leafiara concedes, "I don't know about that... Chandy did an incredible job of out-Leafi-ing me yesterday."
Geijon says, "I wonder if folks know who Alendrial is."
Speaking mildly to Tayler, Leafiara asks, "Does Irval really count?"
Tikba says, "Perhaps they are old enemies, that she is merely remembering."
Thyrabos says, "So Thadston will choose himself now over his prosecution. That was really the bribe."
Mauss says, "Ta think... they won' let mother 'ave a drink."
Speaking to Leafiara, Tayler says, "I meant Amos."
Thrassus says, "Any enemies she'd be making were already enemies before she was elected."
Speaking to Tayler, Leafiara ponders, "Oh."
Mauss says, "Anyhoo."
Thrassus says, "And no Remnant attack."
Speaking to Missoni, Perigourd says, "Only in smaller doses."
Tikba says, "We must await the judge's decision."
Thrassus says, "I suppose they expect the poison to do the job."
Evia says, "Who lives who dies who tells your story, who is the martyr flavor of the year."
Vaemyr says, "There was a lot to process tonight."
Leafiara says, "Well... as ever, that was something."
Tayler says, "It seems a welcome outcome, at least for those who were on trial."
Tayler says, "An easy out, with a dying woman taking the charges."
Tayler says, "I suppose she wants one last act to protect you all."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "Whomever is the new leader, name change, I believe."
Leafiara says, "I sort of feel like I just outlasted Thadston so he couldn't even get to the questions that would have been more challenging to me."
Raelee slowly says, "... she is not going to die."
Speaking to Raelee, Tayler says, "Dead or locked in a bane coffin for a decade it matters little I suppose."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I'm surprised he didn't ask you about some of the other items, to see if you would refute any of the others."
Tayler says, "Or locked in a prison cell for that matter."
Leafiara says, "To be fair, I did briefly mention that I joined in Lormesta 5122, which ran counter to what Chandy said."
Speaking to Tayler, Raelee says, "I take my assignments seriously. The rest... immaterial."
Leafiara says, "In other words, no, I wasn't a Rook when I got elected. Either time."
Vaemyr says, "I... yeah I need to process. Good night all."
Speaking to Raelee, Tayler says, "I am not doubting you, merely that the outcome does not really matter, dead or locked away for life is much the same."
Speaking to Tayler, Kiyna says, "I will not pretend I am not relieved that my charges might be dropped, but my preference would be to be acquitted of them."
Leafiara says, "I really wanted a chance to tell him that I actually advised Kiyna against running for the council."
Speaking to Raelee, Vaemyr says, "If you get some blood samples at some point I would love to help analyze and help with the poison."
Leafiara says, "I told her that, sometimes, the more good you try to do for the town, the more people will hate you..."
Speaking to Tayler, Raelee says, "I agree. I am not curing her for her benefit."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Raelee says, "I have no doubt that we will."
Speaking lightly to Kiyna, Leafiara asks, "Was my assessment correct?"
Speaking to Leafiara, Kiyna says, "...Perhaps. There were enjoyable moments as Councilor."
Speaking to Leafiara, Kiyna says, "So much praise and adulation, you understand."
Speaking to Kiyna, Leafiara agrees, "Wouldn't argue against that either."
Kiyna waggles her fingers mystically at Leafiara. How nice.
Leafiara waggles her fingers mystically at Kiyna. How nice.
[General] Jiarine asks, "Is there a cleric who can come to Ta'Vaalor for a corpse?"
Kiyna says, "I am not going to be running again, though. Not this next cycle."
Leafiara says, "Shame Alosaka wasn't here tonight. For as brief as our conversations have been over the years, he's dug deeper into who I am than many have ever tried."
Kiyna says, "Right. Time to think about what in the hells just happened..."
Tayler says, "It was a lot."
Leafiara says, "I'll need to take time to even digest what it was, honestly."
Tayler says, "That was... everything just got turned on it's head."
Tayler says, "It seems an easy outcome and an acceptable one, at least for those accused, though."
Tayler says, "Perhaps too easy."
Leafiara says, "Truthfully, I'm not sure I like the move. I'd rather win or lose on my own merits, but..."
Leafiara says, "Thadston will probably agree to it."
Leafiara says, "Because it's Casiphia."
Tayler says, "I wonder if Alendrial arranged it not because of those of you who were likely to win."
Tayler says, "But a few were a bit..."
Tayler asks, "Self-implicating?"
Tayler says, "Even if they were being honest."
Arahnim asks, "Are we sure that Alendrial is on the level?"
Tayler says, "I guess it remains to be seen."
Arahnim says, "I find her arrival and the boy in the mountain's sickness..."
Arahnim says, "To be a little too...convienent."
Leafiara says, "She's a former leader of the Rooks and of the half-elven freedom fighter group, the Scions of Shaundara."
Leafiara says, "Trust nothing."
Leafiara says, "That was my point."
Leafiara says, "But it's not an arrival either. She's been working as our Steward of the Coffers for over five years now."
Speaking to Arahnim, Tayler says, "She's been here for... six or so years."
Arahnim says, "Ah..."
Leafiara says, "Just silently working for our town in her position. The only one to hold her position that long."
Arahnim says, "Well I dont do much coin counting."
Arahnim says, "No need when I don't need anything."
Tayler says, "What's happening with the Reach seems the much greater threat in all of this though."
Arahnim says, "This does seem small potatoes."
Arahnim says, "Compared to the reach."
Tayler asks, "You've seen the shapes in the clouds, right?"
Tayler asks, "Like we saw in the Bleaklands?"
Leafiara cautiously says, "Yes."
