Synopsis
People gather at the Moot Hall Observation Balcony in preparation for the Trial of the Brotherhood of Rooks. Judge Manard is the first court official to arrive at the Chamber of Justice, not counting the defendant Councilors Kayse and Kiyna, though one person shouts "Not my Judge!" at him. Barrister Jeshiah stumbles in next. He drops a case of parchments, then picks them up and informs Gutstorm that he should go to the Observation Balcony. Mayor Thadston arrives last, then the trial begins as Manard calls for Thadston and Jeshiah to make their opening statements, then call the first defendant.
Thadston commences his opening statement, saying the trial will be an opportunity to hear people who look and sound like their friends, family, or once trusted allies, who will perch themselves on high, polish their words, and sing of their heroics. He says they'll claim the ends of bettering Wehnimer's Landing justify the means, paint the world in grey, and say sometimes one must get mud on their faces and blood on their hands--but he says they're selfish liars who will preach their defenses and obscure facts, then questions who they are to decide what actions need to be taken to protect the town--are they elected officials?
Yes, he answers, some of them are and of them were--and that is the definition of corruption. He calls the Silver Gryphons and Drakes Vanguard strong, honorable examples of defending and protecting without sacrificing virtue, then says it's time to reject the Rooks' approach, hold them accountable, and stand firm in the light to fight monsters by not becoming one themselves.
Jeshiah says Thadston is guilty of everything he accused the Rooks of, but he's not on trial yet. He continues that he won't put the Rooks into neat little boxes that make it easy for Thadston to generalize and paint them as monsters, but says it's best they be allowed their own statements and words to show that Thadston's wrong on every charge and every accusation.
Manard calls for Thadston to announce the charges and the punishment he seeks, so Thadston obliges:
- Impropriety and Conspiracy for behavior in conflict with the expectations of law-abiding citizens and meeting in secret with a criminal organization to undermine the Landing's defenders and allies, threatening stability and peace.
- Hooliganism for violent behavior and attempted plots of further violence against Landing allies, endangering stability and peace.
- Endangering Public Safety for plotting to undermine Landing allies, inviting potential for retaliatory measures that endanger everyone's safety.
- Disturbing the Peace for conflict with the law, covert actions, conspiring, and confrontational and violent actions that unnecessarily attract enemies both foreign and domestic.
- Treason for the Brothherhood's existence betraying the laws and moral code of Wehnimer's Landing while flying a false banner to excuse their crimes and behavior.
Finally, Thadston seeks punishment of all official titles and positions stripped, time served, hefty fines, and banishment from future political positions.
Jeshiah calls Pukk (prime) as the first defendant. Pukk says he stands an innocent man who was hanegd without a trial, but now is his time to have a say. He asks where Thadston's evidence is and says they cleaned up an organization and changed to defend a town that needed defending. Thadston asks if we weren't being defended; Pukk says we were, but we also still needed help, so the Rooks jumped in and filled the gaps to lay down their lives as other defenders did. He says they cleaned up their ranks and being secretive is not an offense.
Thadston asks Pukk if he's ever attacked town guards or contracted defenders. Pukk says he has and he paid the price when he was found guilty and paid his dues. Thadston sarcastically rejects the idea that paying the price is sufficient for someone's dead father and brother; Pukk says it was mainly Imperials and he took them as enemies. Thadston asks who will defend the town against Pukk and Pukk says same as those who will defend the town against Thadston, then points up to the balcony. Thadston says life is so cheap to Pukk that it can be redeemed by silvers and asks if he's Amos.
Jeshiah asks Pukk if he's prepared anyone to speak on his behalf; Pukk says no and he'll say his peace with his heart. Thadston says Pukk's heart still beats, unlike the guards he murdererd; Pukk says Thadston murdered the Rooks and is just as guilty and went above his authority. Thadston says he hanged them for crimes; Pukk says the crimes have to be proven first; Thadston asks what the guards' crimes were; Pukk says he didn't kill guards, but Imperial soldiers he thought were fighting against the town. Thadston asks why he thought that, asking if one of the Thorns or their pamphlets told him; Pukk says no, just because it's the nature of the beast; Thadston says it's not 5198 with Hochstib; Pukk says that was then (OOC clarification: the night he killed soldiers wasn't the night that Mother's Den got raided, so Pukk already got fined for such and was then released) and asks what new evidence Thadston has.
Thadston asks if he even needs new evidence after how flippant Pukk has been with lives, then asks what Pukk planned to do with the wagon raid. Pukk says the same is said of Thadston being flippant with lives and asks what wagon raid, saying it was just a map and Thadston presumed it was a raid. Pukk says his main concern was that if the Rooks had that information, than the Remnants probably did too, and he didn't want the Remnants to frame the Rooks. Thadston asks what was being discussed, then; Pukk says nothing, really, and the Rooks didn't want to be monsters. He wanted to keep their names clean. Thadston asks if they were going to stop the Remnants and why they had a map; Pukk says the map was supposed the be route of the supply caravans and at first he wondered why he should care if the Remnants got them, but then considered the possibility of them posing as the Rooks.
Thadston implies that Pukk should have alerted him, Marshal Stormyrain, or Elidal, but Pukk says they just got that information before the raid and didn't have time to think about it, but he knows how inept Thadston is and that if the Rooks wanted to protect their name, they'd have to be the ones to stop them. Thadston asks if Pukk's legs hurt from trying to tread water so quickly and Pukk says Thadston's the one treading water if all he has are taunts. Thadston asks if they were going to show up in secret to make sure the Remnants didn't attack the caravans; Pukk says maybe watch, maybe ask them to turn back, but they Rooks never even had a chance to discuss it. Thadston says it's unbelievable, yet makes sense: if they can't kill Imperial invaders themselves, just watch the Remnants do it.
Thadston says he has more questions and Pukk has already admitted guilt on murder and negligence. Jeshiah begins to say something, but Pukk asks for a second and questions whether Thadston can prove other allegations; Thadston says he doesn't need to question on every one and no one has the time to ask ten thousand questions. Pukk says a secret club that Thadston's not invited to doesn't break the law and he can't run amok just because he's in lust with Casiphia.
Jeshiah asks Pukk whether he just recently announced he was a member of the Rooks; Pukk says yes, but not the old Rooks. Jeshiah agrees the old Rooks are dead or Remnants now, then asks Pukk what people have said to him when approached about joining the Brotherhood of Rooks. Pukk says they need to do what Thaddy can't and protect the town, as some have approached and are dissatisfied or even questioning Thadston's sanity because of his temper tantrums.
Jeshiah asks if it's fair to say that many townspeople feel unprotected and unrepresented; Pukk says some feel unprotected and some feel protected. Jeshiah asks which position in town Pukk thinks is primarily responsible for protecting and representing the people; Pukk says all of us. Jeshiah sighs, then repeats his question and winks; Pukk says he's sure there are officials, but we're all responsible; Jeshiah sighs and repeats his question again, then Thadston jumps in to say Jeshiah's referring to him, which he agrees with.
Jeshiah says, then: if a majority of town feels unprotected and unrepresented, forcing the natural evolution of the Rooks to fill a gap, then wouldn't Pukk say that's an honorable thing? Pukk says he would hope so, but honor depends on each person, then simply says that he wants to defend the town and that is honorable. Jeshiah asks if the Mayor may be derelict of duty if such a gap exists and has forced others' hands to defend the town. Pukk says yes; Jeshiah says that, in theory, the crimes Pukk is accused of are indirectly the fault of the town's leadership, namely the current office of the Mayor. Pukk says yes and Jeshiah says he's made his case that Pukk, is a hero, not a monster with metal arms.
Manard asks if Pukk has any final words; Pukk says he loves his town and will always put his life to defend it, even if from the corruption within. He also says Thadston was disrespectful calling Jeshiah a boy when he's trying to do a job, then thanks him and says he (Pukk) is showing his respect in court. He asks if he's dismissed and Manard says yes.
Jeshiah calls Councilor Kayse next and Manard asks for her statement of defense. She says that she was asked a few weeks ago what virtue she holds most important (by Alsoaka) and she said courage, which isn't just heroic deeds and doing what's right, but also the courage to do what's wrong when needed to make things right, walk a path alone in order to correct the course, and keep a secret for the greater good of your people and home.
She says definitions of right and wrong have been thrown around quite a bit over the past few months, with mixed reviews on groups around Wehnimer's or the Empire itself, but people have different definitions of noble or horrible actions. She says the problems plaguing the Landing are often clear, but the solutions aren't always black and white, and not all problems can be solved with quils or even swords and shields, but individuals who will do what others will not.
Kayse asks why we need the Rooks and says it takes people like them to get their hands dirty so others can live freely. She reminds that the Rooks freed Kharusa from krolvin slavers, kept her safe, and nursed her back to health, then later escorted Tyrrax through the tunnels in cooperation with the Mayor to free Kharusa's father (and the militiaman Rian). She reminds that she organized and led the mission to capture Bodohal and held meetings to include everyone so Rooks, knights, townsfolk, militia, and Imperials could work toward a common goal to stop someone terrorizing our town.
Kayse says they've also defended against enemies such as Gnul and helped make Wehnimer's the best it can be, then adds that she has no blood on her hands for involvement with the Rooks and has advocated for no violence. She says she was infiltrating them for Amos, but nonetheless believes the Rooks or people like them are a necessity in the balance of the town--and so does Amos.
Kayse also reminds that the town council approved a weapons deal with Elidal which she got increased from twenty to twenty-five percent, then reveals that Casiphia hadn't wanted the deal approved since the other end involved guarding the caravans. Kayse says she fought with her and was called soft, but she viewed the financial gain and the potential relationship with the barony next door as important.
She says that information she was collecting that could stop the Wraith from slaughtering citizens, allies, and defenders has now been compromised because her methods were not the path of a "righteous" individual. She says those who compromsied her efforts now have the blood of Landing citizens on their hands because they chose a priority that was not Wehnimer's Landing, then concludes that her actions and decisions always have the goal, outcome, and intentions of benefiting the Landing and its people.
Thadston asks how her ego fit through the arch and Kayse asks if they're going to discuss the information she gave him, though it wasn't a Rook matter. Thadston says Kayse seems to think she's carried the burden of town alone, saving it from Bodohal, Gnul, and whoever else she imagines, but asks if she doesn't have fellow town councilors, heroes, and the Marshal. Kayse says she didn't do it alone; Thadston asks if none of what she's mentioned can be accomplished without the Rooks; Kayse asks if he has a lead on information about the Wraith and says she does.
Thadston asks what port of our town's soul that information cost, what favor she promised or delivered, and to whom. She says she doesn't believe it's best to reveal if we want to keep town protected; he says she indicated it's already in jeopardy and known; she says she's having faith it's not; he says she might be wrong; she says she'd be wrong, but announcing the information wouldn't help either outcome; he says it might help her defense.
He finally says she doesn't have to tell him, but asks if she brokered a deal; she says yes; he asks if she can say with certainty that her deal will not come back to harm the Landing. Kayse says she couldn't guarantee that even if she was trading kittens; Thadston says the answer is no, then; she says she'll take full responsibility if it comes back to harm us.
Thadston asks if Kayse brokered the deal as a Councilor, Firefly, or Rooks; Kayse says he can pick a title and she supposes Rook or Firely are the options; Thadston says he doesn't want to suppose and repeats his question on what authority she made the deal. She asks what title gave him authority to hang seven people without a trial; he says Mayor. Thadston says the public scoffed at him for considering delaying an election with a timeline, but fools are running around brokering deals in shadows.
Thadston asks what was being discussed in the Den with the map; Kayse says she imagines disrupting supply lines, but nothing in-depth had been discussed. Thadston asks how the Rooks would disrupt the supply lines; she says nothing had been discussed and the meeting was suddenly interrupted; Thadston asks how they'd do it if she had to guess; she says she assumes raiding caravans and taking their supplies so the settlers wouldn't have them.
Thadston asks if it's possible Imperials would have died; Kayse reiterates that she was strongly against it; Thadston asks how she would have stopped them; Kayse says that usually infiltrating an organization means passing along information to others; Thadston laughs at the idea of giving it to Amos. Kayse says Thadston knows that Marshal Stormyrain and Sir Guarrin knew about her position; Thadston says he knows a lot and tonight it's just for him, but he has a letter from Guarrin about her.
Thadston asks Kayse who she serves: the town as a councilor, Amos as a firely, or Mother as a Rook, and how she even decides what she'll do or be each morning. She says Wehnimer's Landing and that Thadston forgot about Negotiator of the Black Hand.
Thadston asks if she was a Rook before she became a Councilor; Kayse says yes. Thadston asks if Kiyna was; Kayse says perhaps that's for her to answer and she doesn't have a record for enrollments. Thadston asks if Kayse conspired with Kiyna, Leafiara, Chandrellia, and Pukk to ensure that as outgoing Councilor Rooks left Rooks, new Rooks came in. Kayse says no and she ran because she wanted to make a difference. Thadston asks again if there was never communication among their ranks to run for office as secret Rooks; Kayse says no, it was never discussed, and perhaps his charges of conspiracy aren't as strong as he thinks.
Thadston asks if she thinks it's fair for anyone to broker secret deals with potential harm to others as long as they believe they're doing it for the good of the Landing; Kayse says that's why everyone has different morals, opinions, and ethics and she does think it can be fair. Thadston says he's done.
Jeshiah asks Kayse if she has any character witnesses and she says Marshal Stormyrain and Lady Lylia. She also inquires about the letter from Guarrin that Thadston mentioned; he says it was sent to him, he read it, and she won't.
Thadston asks for Stormy first, so she comes down and states that she's known Kayse many years, has always known her to have the best interest of the Landing in mind, trusts her, and doesn't say that lightly. She says Kayse told her what she was doing and Stormy agreed to hold her secret in exchange for information she felt might aid the Landing, and Kayse kept her word. Stormy says it's not unusual for that to be necessary in our town and she's had to walk in the grey many times--for Puptilian to give him plausible deniability and with Thadston when he was the Marshal conducting secret operations to garner advantage against sworn enemies. She says she's worked with the Rooks in the past to do the same, when Rysus, Thrayzar, Lylia, herself, and others brought down Drangell.
Stormy says the Rooks are many things, but first they are citizens who love the town. She's spoken in the past of a secret operations brigade, utilized the opportunity Kayse provided to see if it would be fruitful, and is hopeful that we may continue to find success. She says she's grateful for Kayse's trust in her and putting herself at risk to share information she wouldn't have otherwise.
Thadston asks if Stormy sanctioned Kayse's operations; she says benefitted from is a better word; he says she'll take and not give, then nods; she asks if she's on trial. Thadston asks if she's aware of who Kayse brokered a deal with and the details of it to gain information of the Wraith that, to his knowledge, hasn't been known yet. Responding to Stormy asking if she's on trial, Thadston says they're simple questions; Manard says he'll allow them, but Stormy is not compelled to answer. Stormy says they're simple, but if he's going to question whether she gives to the Landing, that will take time we don't have. Thadston asks again if she's aware of the deal; Stormy says she's aware one was made; Thadston asks if she doesn't know the details; Stormy repeats that she's aware one was made.
Thadston says Stormy said she trusted Kayse, but asks if she trusts Kiyna, Drektor, Leafi, Chandy, and Pukk. Stormy says she doesn't know many of them well enough to answer; he says he thinks she just did and she returns to the balcony afterward.
Jeshiah calls Lylia down. She says she could wax rhapsodic about Kayse's deeds and calls her an easy woman to praise, saying she trusts her enough that she'd work with her as she's worked with Thadston in the past to accomplish necessary goals, as the Faendryl understand. Lylia says many lay down their lives, but fewer stake their reputations, yet Kayse has done it, being impugned as a Rook and reviled as a turncoat yet remaining true to the well-being on the Landing. Lylia says she knows the monumental effort it takes to accomplish change, let alone as bloodlessly as possible, yet that's what Kayse has done if her efforts aren't wasted by petty prosecution of risible or offensive charges. She says information is a rare weapon and only some can wield it with finesses, but Kayse has done it for years to work for the town.
Thadston calls it an interesting perspective and asks how Lylia would have responded when she was the Mayor if she learned of citizens taking it upon themselves to work in secret and broker mysterious deals without her knowledge and permission--would she have approved of such? Lylia says she already did that when Mother told her how to govern, and she reacted ungraciously, having despised the woman at the time.
Thadston seeks to go beyond the dislike and asks if Mother didn't seek to undermine her; Lylia says she did, but that was then, this is now, and if she'd shared information instead of dictating to her, they would have seen accord; Thadston asks how Faendryl would deal with such treason; Lylia says they don't have time to go into Faendryl governance and managed dissent. Thadston asks for at least a quick word like torture or death; she says no, managed dissent is more nuanced. Infiltration, control without the seeming of control, double agency. Thadston says it certainly wouldn't be allowing a gathering of witnesses to sing praises. Jeshiah says that Lylia isn't on trial and Manard says she's free to return; she says she did offer to answer questions, then thanks everyone and returns to the balcony.
Kayse says that Guarrin agreed to be a character witness for her and is in Hendor, but the letter Thadston was referring to was his statement. Thadston calls it honorable to sink in quicksand and grab three other people to pull down with her. Jeshiah says Kayse defended herself a lot better than he could, then says it's become obvious more and more tonight why we have Rooks: failure and emotions roll down from the top, leaving town defenseless at times and unable to rely on the stability of its Mayor. Everyone wants to live in peace, have freedoms, and defend the town, and in a sense we're all Rooks. He has no further words in Kayse's defense and motions for Judge Manard to continue the trial tomorrow evening and likely after that; Manard agrees to adjourn and begin again the next evening. Jeshiah scribbles down notes, then runs off. Kayse says so much for closing statements (with Jeshiah gone) and Thadston tells her to go ahead, but she says she wants to make sure her ego can fit through the arch to leave and believes she and the others have said enough in her defense.
Comedic Highlights
Speaking mildly to Shinann, Leafiara says, "Things have maybe changed slightly since you've been away." Stormyrain asks, "Do you think that Shinann and I do not communicate?" Speaking to Stormyrain, Leafiara says, "Oh, I didn't know how far she'd been." Kayse flatly says, "Shinann has known before Stormy that I was a Rook..." Shinann says, "I have been kept abreast ..." Leafiara amusedly says, "Okay, let's just not let Irval find out." Shinann says, "That." Leafiara says, "He'll never stop screaming."
Speaking drunkenly to Pukk, Gutstorm slurs, "Larsya wont let yoo neck shtretch, she no lose her favorite target."
Gutstorm offers Juramis a tankard of Jock's bitter. Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Itsh dish...or a sign."
Down below, Jeshiah stumbles into the chamber, dropping a case in his hands and some parchments go scattering everywhere. Judge Manard sighs, and Jeshiah just bows, before quickly scooping up his parchments. Jeshiah taps Gutstorm lightly on his shoulder. Jeshiah points at a narrow stairway. Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Oh." Jeshiah says, "You should go up there good sir." Gutstorm grunts bashfully, averting his eyes. Seaward Gutstorm just climbed up a narrow stairway. Juramis huskily asks, "Going well so far?" Juramis chuckles to himself. Lithyia says, "It's...going." Tikba mildly says, "Nobody has been hanged yet." Speaking to Tikba, Tayler says, "Well..." Tikba mildly clarifies, "Tonight."
Kialeigh exclaims, "Poor Jeshiah... I could just WATCH him all night!" Kialeigh says, "The boy is more entertaining than a court jester." Juramis huskily says, "He is young enough to send the Adventurer's Guild after, if he went missing."
Kialeigh says, "I think people like the cat better than the man at this point." Speaking amusedly to Kialeigh, Leafiara repeats, "At this point?" Lylia says, "Cats are sometimes easier to like than men." Speaking to Lylia, Kiyna asks, "Sometimes?" Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dat why me like wimun." Speaking to Lylia, Mourdeyan says, "D'pends on the man." Lylia diplomatically says, "I only get to scratch a very few men behind the ears. This is one reason to enjoy cats." Evia says, "Men have cooties behind their ears, eew."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Yoo goin on a diet Mongo." The orange cat hisses at Gutstorm.
The Judge says, "Mayor Thadston, Jeshiah, you will have your opening statements, and then call the first defendant to come speak." Thadston nods. Jeshiah says, "Opening sta...." Jeshiah says, "Yes, of course." Alosaka says, "I suppose this sets up a good appeal for poor counsel later."
Alosaka says, "He is betraying a rather cavalier attitude toward the lives he took." Speaking mildly to Alosaka, Tikba says, "Yes, but he is the mayor." Tikba says, "No doubt he felt it was his right." Speaking to Tikba, Alosaka says, "I agree Thadston is cavalier, but I meant Pukk in this case."
Evia asks, "Uh, why was the defendant not sworn in?" Juramis huskily says, "I'm sure there will be enough swearing by the time this is over."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "We hadn't even had time to think about it. We know how inept you are. If we wanted to protect our name we would have to stop them." Irval asks, "Inept?" Tikba says, "He has tried twice now to capture a dying woman and failed both times. You must judge his competence for yourself."
Perigourd says, "Not comporting himself very well." Speaking to Perigourd, Leafiara murmurs, "His answers were significantly better in the practice session than now." Speaking to Perigourd, Kippe asks, "Are you surprised?" Speaking to Leafiara, Perigourd says, "The truth is often best." Speaking to Perigourd, Leafiara says, "Oh, it's been the truth both in practice and now, but... his wording and framing is a bit off at the moment." Kialeigh says, "He is being truthful to a fault."
Kayse admits, "It is true I was infiltrating the Rooks for Amos." Kayse tilts her head upward towards the balcony, "Despite this fact, I believe the Rooks or people like them are a necessity in the balance of our town. And so does Amos." Kayse reminds, "When the Imperial encampment was first set up, the town council approved a weapons deal. In fact, I got Elidal to raise the percentage from twenty to twenty five percent." Kayse discloses, "When we were first considering it, Casiphia brought it up at a Rook meeting. She did not want the deal approved, especially since the other end of the deal was guarding the caravans for the settlers." Kayse recalls, "I fought with her on it and was told I was soft now for considering what would be the best for the town." Evia asks, "This some kinda campaign speech?"
Kayse admits, "It is true I was infiltrating the Rooks for Amos." Kayse tilts her head upward towards the balcony, "Despite this fact, I believe the Rooks or people like them are a necessity in the balance of our town. And so does Amos." Chandrellia blinks. Chandrellia mutters, "Damn Samfelted twice." Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Well shinch technically she doon it firsht, maybe it should be reffered to ash Kayse'd."
Thadston asks, "And can you say with the utmost certainty that whatever deal you brokered will not in any way, shape or form come back to inflict damage or harm on Wehnimer's Landing or her people?" Speaking measuredly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Even if I was trading kittens, I couldn't guarantee that. We have new threats everyday." Thadston says, "Sneaky sneaky." Thadston says, "So the answer is no." Speaking reticently to Thadston, Kayse says, "I will take full responsibility if it comes back to harm us." Thadston says, "Well, according to Pukk, a few silvers paid will wash the debt."
Speaking drunkenly to Stormyrain, Gutstorm slurs, "Yoo knowed Kayse wudda quintuple agent?" Speaking simply to Gutstorm, Stormyrain says, "Yes." Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Kiyna, yooda quintuple agent too?" Kiyna smirks at Gutstorm. Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dat not a denial...." Speaking to Gutstorm, Kiyna says, "No, I'm not."
Thadston asks, "So you did not conspire with Kiyna and Leafiara and Chandrellia and Pukk to ensure that as outgoing councilor Rooks left office, new Rooks came in?" Speaking earnestly to Thadston, Kayse says, "No, we did not." Tikba gazes with a bemused expression at her surroundings. Tikba wryly says, "I wish that we had conspired." Tikba says, "The campaign was a great deal of work."
Thadston asks, "There was never any communication among your ranks to the plan and running for office as secret Rooks?" Speaking firmly to Thadston, Kayse says, "It was never discussed, no." Speaking hushedly to herself, Elexya murmurs, "What's wrong with trying to get people who you are aligned with elected?" Speaking to Leafiara, Kiyna says, "Didn't you vote for Pookia? I feel Samfelted." Speaking to Kiyna, Leafiara answers, "Yes."
Jeshiah asks, "Kayse! Before I begin my questions, did you have anyone who wishes to speak on your behalf?" Kayse simply says, "I do. The Marshal, Stormyrain and Lady Lylia Rashere." Gutstorm offers Lylia a coil of thick rope. Lylia gazes in amusement at Gutstorm. Lylia declines Gutstorm's offer. Speaking drunkenly to Lylia, Gutstorm slurs, "Gib dish to Thadston?" Lylia says, "I am sure he has brought his own."
Juramis huskily says, "I'm either getting tipsy, or this is getting more interesting by the second."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish clearly prove wimun shmarter den men, no fensh to da fellersh here, but none ush can shceme dish goot."
Thematic Highlights
Thadston recites: "Over the course of this trial you are going to get the opportunity to hear from several people who look and sound like your friends, or your family, or your once trusted allies. They are going to perch themselves on high, polish their feathers and words to a sheen, and sing of their heroics in a world full of chaos and indecisiveness."
Thadston says, "I am charging them all with Endangering Public Safety. The nature of the Brotherhood of Rooks as a criminal organization threatens the public safety of the citizens of Wehnimer's Landing. Open war has occurred in the streets, establishments within town have been attacked, and plotting to undermine Wehnimer's allies invites the potential for retaliatory measures or actions that endanger the safety of all."
Thadston says, "Finally, I am charging them all with Treason. There is no greater crime that the Brotherhood of Rooks face than treason. Their very existence betrays the laws and moral code of Wehnimer's Landing. They fly a false banner to excuse their crimes and their behavior. Misguided intentions or not, the Rooks' actions betray the town and its people."
Pukk says, "I stand before you an innocent man that was hanged without first having a trial." Pukk says, "Without a say." Pukk says, "And this is my time." Pukk asks, "You claim we are all of those things. But I ask you. Where is your evidence?" Pukk says, "We cleaned up an organization and changed to defend a town that needed defending."
Thadston asks, "Were we not being defended?" Pukk says, "We were. We also still needed help." Gutstorm yells, "Tell him the mayor not doin it Pukk, sho yoo had to!"
Thadston asks, "Have you ever attacked any town guards or contracted defenders of any capacity?" Pukk says, "I have." Pukk says, "I will admit that." Pukk says, "I paid that price too." Pukk says, "I was brought before a judge and found guilty and paid my dues." Thadston says, "Oh, someone's father and brother is dead. But you paid the price." Thadston says, "So we're good." Thadston rolls his eyes. Pukk says, "Mainly it was imperials and I did take them as enemies." Pukk says, "But I did pay my dues by law." Thadston says, "I'm glad life is cheap to you that it can be redeemed by some silvers." Thadston asks, "Is that you in there Amos?"
[skipping ahead a bit from the above] Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "I didn't kill guards. I killed imperial soldiers that I thought were fighting against the town." Pukk says, "But that was then." Pukk asks, "What new evidence do you have against me?" Thadston asks, "Oh, you thought they were fighting against the town?" Thadston asks, "Because a Thorn told you? Or some little pamphlet?" Pukk says, "I saw them as invaders." Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "No. Because that is the nature of the beast." Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "So again. What new evidence do you have against me with those charges?" Thadston says, "Ah, you're right. It's okay if you kill allied non-citizens because of your perception." Thadston asks, "New? Do I need any more than that?" Thadston says, "How flippant with the life of people you are." Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "The same is said about you."
Thadston says, "I have no other questions. You've already admitted your guilt to murder and negligence." Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "What of the other allegations?" Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "Can you prove all those?" Pukk says, "Just us having a secret club that you aren't invited to doesn't break the law." Thadston says, "I'm not required to question you about every single allegation. The Judge will decide if the evidence presented to him is enough to warrant conviction and punishment." Thadston says, "No one has the time to ask ten thousand questions." Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "Just because you are in lust with Casi doesn't mean you can run amok."
Jeshiah asks, "Would it be fair to assume that, if such a gap exists, forcing the hands of others to defend the town, that the Mayor himself may be derelict of duty?" Jeshiah peers quizzically at Pukk. Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "I think so. yes." Jeshiah says, "I think so too. I really do." Jeshiah says, "So in theory, your crimes you are being accused of, are honestly indirectly the fault of the town's leadership, primarily...the current office of the Mayor." Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "If we're having to step up for him. Then yes." Mourdeyan asks, "Who's on trial here? Thadston or the Rooks?" Tikba murmurs, "Who indeed?" Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Da town on trial if ye axed me."
Kayse begins, "A few weeks ago, I was asked what virtue I hold most important." (Kayse gazes up towards the balcony and nods slightly to Alosaka.) Kayse continues, "I responded courage, because in my eyes, courage is not just heroic deeds and doing what is right..." Kayse confidently says, "But sometimes it is the courage to do what is wrong when needed to make things right." Kayse states, "It is the courage to walk a path alone in order to correct the course." Kayse appreciatively says, "And it is the courage to keep someone's secret for the greater good of your people and home."
Kayse bluntly inquires, "Why do we need the Rooks? Kayse informs, "It takes those like the Rooks to get their hands dirty so those can live in this town and have the freedom we have been preaching about the past eight months." Kayse discloses, "We freed Kharusa from her krolvin slavers." Kayse pauses and shrugs indifferently, "Perhaps a job anyone could have done. But we kept her safe and nursed her back to health. Rooks escorted Tyrrax through the tunnels, in cooperation with Mayor Andrews in order to safely exchange Tyrrax for Kharusa's father." Kayse proclaims, "I organized and led a mission to capture Bodohal. Although stemming from the Rooks, I held meetings to organize a town effort to include all against someone terrorizing our town and murdering our people." Kayse considers, "I taunted Bodohal with the offer of having dinner with a future baron and penned the letter to Elidal to set up the meeting. We worked as Rooks, knights, townsfolk, militia, and Imperials for a common goal." Kayse repeats, "Why do we need the Rooks?" Kayse passionately says, "We have defended our gates against enemies such as Gnul, rescued our people from slavers, and continued to help make Wehnimer's the best it can be." Kayse firmly says, "I can confidently say I do not have blood on my hands for my involvement in the Rooks. I have advocated for no violence." Kayse admits, "It is true I was infiltrating the Rooks for Amos." Kayse tilts her head upward towards the balcony, "Despite this fact, I believe the Rooks or people like them are a necessity in the balance of our town. And so does Amos."
Kayse frustratedly divulges, "Information I was collecting has now been compromised. Information that could stop the slaughtering of our citizens, allies and defenders by the Wraith." Kayse reticently says, "But because my methods were not the path of a 'righteous' individual, I can say that those who compromised my efforts now have the blood of Wehnimer's citizens on their hands for they picked what they thought was right. Or perhaps even chose what they thought was more of a priority...and that was not Wehnimer's Landing." Kayse evenly says, "I say this because I believe my actions and decisions--whether you think they are black, white, or gray are up to you-- but the goal, outcome and intentions were the same; to benefit Wehnimer's Landing and its people." Kayse passionately emphasizes, "Always for Wehnimer's."
Thadston asks, "And can you say with the utmost certainty that whatever deal you brokered will not in any way, shape or form come back to inflict damage or harm on Wehnimer's Landing or her people?" Leafiara mutters, "Never seen a deal yet that anyone could make *that* guarantee of." Speaking measuredly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Even if I was trading kittens, I couldn't guarantee that. We have new threats everyday." Lylia says, "No one has. Such a perfect exchange does not exist." Kiyna says, "Thadston has a great track record with deals. Nothing ever goes wrong, he's your man." Thadston says, "Sneaky sneaky." Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I mean the Tyrrax one is already coming back to bite folks." Thadston says, "So the answer is no." Perigourd says, "In which case it's pointless to make such deals as you're simply trading lives." Speaking to Perigourd, Kiyna asks, "We've made deals with Elidal. Should we not have?"
Kayse says, "Usually when you are infiltrating an organization you pass along information to others." Thadston asks, "To Amos?" Kayse crisply says, "You very well know the Marshal and Sir Guarrin knew about my position." Speaking drunkenly to Stormyrain, Gutstorm slurs, "Yoo knowed Kayse wudda quintuple agent?" Speaking simply to Gutstorm, Stormyrain says, "Yes."
Tikba mildly says, "Thadston seems not to believe that the people of the Landing might simply prefer to elect Rooks." Perigourd asks, "Those same people elected him, no?" Speaking to Perigourd, Kiyna says, "Perhaps the Landing takes all kinds." Speaking to Tikba, Leafiara acknowledges, "The people already thought Pukk and I were Rooks when they voted us in and we weren't even yet." Speaking to Pukk, Leafiara recalls, "Actually, wait, maybe you were by then. I forget the exact timeline."
Stormyrain says, "I have known Kayse for many years. Long before this started. I have always known her to have the best interests of the Landing in mind, whether she was conducting business or leading. I trust her, and that is something that is something I do not say lightly." Stormyrain offers, "When she came to me to tell me what she was doing, I agreed to hold her secret in exchange for information she felt may help aid in the Landing. And she kept her word." Stormyrain says, "It is not unusual in our town, for that to be necessary. I have had to walk in the grey many times in the past. For Puptilian, to give him plausible deniability. With you, Mayor, when you were the Marshal. You yourself conducted such secret operations to garner the advantage against our sworn enemies."
Lylia says, "Many of us in this town lay down our lives; far fewer stake their carefully manicured reputations, yet she has done this and more. Impugned as a Rook, and now no doubt reviled as a turncoat, hanged before her trial even completed, Kayse is unwaveringly true to one aim: the well-being of Wehnimer's Landing." Lylia simply asserts, "While many die for it, she lives for it."

Idle Chatter
[Town Square Central]
This is the heart of the main square of Wehnimer's Landing. The impromptu shops of the bazaar are clustered around this central gathering place, where townsfolk, travellers, and adventurers meet to talk, conspire or raise expeditions to the far-flung reaches of Elanith. At the north end, an old well, with moss-covered stones and a craggy roof, is shaded from the moonlight by a strong, robust tree. The oak is tall and straight, and it is apparent that the roots run deep. You also see the night watchman, a grieving wasteland spirit that is flying around, the Niffly disk, an unstable lake spirit that is flying around, the Emperia disk, the repousse copper Perigourd disk raised in leafy designs, a yellow-eyed silvery lor mandrake sprouting niveous peonies, the web-draped Missoni disk, a lazy wild dark red dog, the Kelfyr disk, a grizzled porcupine, a sinuous bone white serpent, a white wicker picnic basket, a sharp-nosed grey puppy with long corded fur, the Spharai disk, the Kialeigh disk, a pale-faced coppery barn owl, a minor mana-well potion, the Ussey disk, a silver-traced carved mahogany cart with some stuff on it, an old well, some wide stone benches with some stuff on it, an herbal remedy donation bin and a round silver-banded barrel.
Also here: Whimweaver Leafiara, Abigorr, a stunned Tikba, Town Councilor Vaemyr, Pukk, Town Councilor Kayse, a stunned Lady Sepharia who is lying down, Niffly, Shinann, Emperia, Epikarik, Sister-in-arms Mourdeyan, Perigourd, Kippe, Pub Proprietor Lithyia, Missoni, Kelfyr, Stormyrain, Sarissa Tayler, Spharai, Kialeigh, Ussey who is kneeling
Speaking to the night watchman, Mourdeyan says, "Careful, your friend is still about."
Speaking to Mourdeyan, Tayler says, "He like it when I steal his breath away, it's like... training or something."
Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "Once this is all cleared up I will let you talk to Stormy about joining the Rooks."
Speaking to Pukk, Leafiara says, "Not it."
Chandrellia says, "So who has popcorn, I hear we're gonna have a show tonight."
Lithyia says, "Confetti and bourbon in the basket."
Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "Too late. I already nominated you."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Kayse corrects, "It is a trial, not a show."
Lithyia says, "Let's be fair, my interrogation was somewhat of a show...this trial will be a show as well."
Speaking to Kayse, Chandrellia says, "Its a joke is what it is."
Speaking mildly to Shinann, Leafiara says, "Things have maybe changed slightly since you've been away."
Kayse murmurs, "I do not find my neck snapping again a joke."
Lithyia says, "You should have had a trial before he did that."
Tayler says, "That reminds me, last minute voting."
Speaking to Kayse, Chandrellia says, "Oh come now, one quick jerk and all those muscles were loosened."
Stormyrain asks, "Do you think that Shinann and I do not communicate?"
Speaking to Stormyrain, Leafiara says, "Oh, I didn't know how far she'd been."
Kayse flatly says, "Shinann has known before Stormy that I was a Rook..."
Lithyia says, "I may not agree with many things happening in this town but that hanging never should have happened the way it did."
Shinann says, "I have been kept abreast ..."
Leafiara amusedly says, "Okay, let's just not let Irval find out."
Shinann says, "That."
Leafiara says, "He'll never stop screaming."
Awaiting the Trial
The sky begins to fill with huge clouds, dark and grey on the bottom, pale and white atop, their puffy crowns ascending toward the heavens.
Vaemyr says, "Well of course it would storm for a trial."
Lithyia asks, "I suppose it's time to head to the moot hall?"
Speaking to Vaemyr, Tayler says, "It storms for everything."
Tikba says, "Ah, the ghost has returned." [OOC: the dead character Corlamaer who shows up every night, can't be raised, and then just logs off]
Pukk recites:
"Everybody join Vaemyr!"
Speaking to Tikba, Leafiara says, "The phantom."
Vaemyr says, "Uhhh."
Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "I still got the touch."
Lithyia says, "Kayse...careful with the bourbon I made."
Lithyia says, "It's extra strong."
Twisting off the cork of her glass bottle, Missoni tilts it back and takes a quick gulp of the bourbon inside.
Missoni exhales slowly, sending out a breath filled with strong alcoholic fumes. A giddy look briefly crosses her face before her viridian eyes roll back in her head as she suddenly crumples to the ground in an undignified heap.
Perigourd draws a sleek cherry red wand from one of the slots on his leather baldric.
Perigourd waves a sleek cherry red wand at Missoni.
The glazed look leaves Missoni.
Missoni weakly says, "How delicious."
Speaking to Missoni, Perigourd asks, "What did you drink?"
Lithyia says, "Told ya, it was extra strong."
Tikba politely says, "A bit strong, it seems."
Speaking to Missoni, Kippe says, "That had some kick."
Speaking to Perigourd, Missoni says, "I think it is called bourbon."
Lithyia says, "It was for Grutak's celebration... so i had to make it REALLY strong."
Perigourd says, "Hmm.."
Pukk recites:
"Last chance to join Vaemyr!"
Missoni idly says, "I will just put that away for later..."
A town crier's voice shouts in the distance, "The Trial of the Brotherhood of Rooks will begin shortly! You are welcome to observe from the balcony above the Chamber of Justice in Moot Hall."
Vaemyr says, "Alright gonna head to there."
[travel]
Leafiara pleasedly says, "Excellent, time to set things straight."
[Wehnimer's Courtroom]
The courtroom is uncomfortably chilly and plainly furnished. Several benches are lined up to face a raised platform at the far end of the room. The town magistrate dispenses justice, swiftly and summarily, seated in the straightbacked chair behind a simple table on the platform. An armed guard leans against the wall, next to the door, looking casual but ready for trouble should it arise. You also see a curtained entryway.
Vaemyr says, "Well when they open it."
Evia says, "Neck traction is great for straightening."
Vaemyr says, "Alright chamber of justice is closed, trial's off guess we all head home."
Leafiara says, "Ah, Pukk would have appreciated that too."
Udari asks, "Why exactly are we here?"
Speaking amiably to Udari, Leafiara says, "A trial. Find out more soon when we get started."
Kayse says, "The balcony is in the justice chamber."
Kayse says, "Which is not here."
[travel]
[Moot Hall, Observation Balcony]
Several rows of hardwood benches line the balcony, each row a bit higher than the previous one in order to provide a view of the proceedings below from every seat. A polished oak railing forms the front barrier of the viewing area, and a narrow stairway leads down. You also see a brilliant purple kitten wearing a purple collar clasped with a pair of crossed silver swords.
Speaking amusedly to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "I know you're trying to be our Cryheart, but you don't need to get lost."
Missoni says, "Oh, perhaps I shall let Winston out. Unless he is to be presiding."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "The courtroom leads there too... if the entryway was open."
Speaking to Missoni, Perigourd says, "Doubtful."
Leafiara says, "I should probably... get rid of all these spells before I make a fireworks display mid-trial. Pardon a moment, all."
Missoni amusedly says, "He was stuck there for the whole of the last Council debate."
Missoni says, "I think he earned a few votes."
Vaemyr says, "If you Watch the Area below you'll be able to see things going on."
[Moot Hall, Chamber of Justice]
Two high-backed, elaborately carved chairs face the imposing, burnished oak bench where members of the official Town Council convene to decide matters of solemn importance. A narrow stairway leads up to a low balcony that surrounds the chamber, providing ample seating for interested visitors to observe the proceedings. You also see a grizzled porcupine, a grieving wasteland spirit that is flying around and a modwir arch.
Kelfyr says, "How in the hell did Pokey get in there."
Evia says, "Oh for our younger days when someone could say, Have a Seat! and boom down you go."
Kialeigh exclaims, "Here we go!"
Kialeigh exclaims, "Oh!"
Lithyia says, "What's a trial without a little knitting..."
Udari says, "Or a good cigar."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "We git paid?"
Lithyia says, "No Guts."
Lithyia says, "We dont."
Speaking to Kelfyr, Stormyrain says, "Pokey is magical."
Kialeigh removes a bag of popcorn from in her charcoal grey jacket.
Kialeigh exclaims, "Ready!"
Speaking to Uniana, Kayse greets, "Fair evening, Lady Anduin. Thank you for coming all this way."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kippe assures, "Soon."
Speaking approvingly to Kayse, Missoni says, "Excellent choice."
Speaking to Uniana, Lylia says, "A pleasure to see you in the wild and wicked west."
Kelfyr says, "Probably trying to sneak into the snack tray in the chambers."
Speaking kindly to Kayse, Uniana whispers aloud, "Of course. I hope the tide of truth looks upon you and fairly."
Udari asks, "Does this have to do with those Rooks that were hung?"
Kayse says, "I actually did not trouble her to make her a character witness."
Speaking affably to Udari, Leafiara responds, "Yep."
Udari says, "I figure justice was served the moment they dangled from the rope."
Leafiara says, "Six of us here. It, uh... might be difficult for Wolfloner to get here since he's banished."
Speaking drunkenly to Pukk, Gutstorm slurs, "Larsya wont let yoo neck shtretch, she no lose her favorite target."
Leafiara helpfully says, "But Jeshiah's offering representation anyway."
Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "Yeah. I was wondering how that was going to work."
Speaking to Leafiara, Udari asks, "He is?"
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I think he was allowed to come to the trial even so, but he... uhh was refusing last I heard."
Lord Juramis just trudged up a narrow stairway. [OOC note: same as with the town halls, I'm opting to include all of Juramis' actions since he's an NPC, but with no bolding since he's background flavor and not the focus of the night.]
Gutstorm offers Juramis a tankard of Jock's bitter.
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Itsh dish...or a sign."
Twisting off the cork of her glass bottle, Kialeigh tilts it back and takes a quick gulp of the bourbon inside.
Kialeigh looks rather relaxed.
Kialeigh exhales slowly, sending out a breath filled with strong alcoholic fumes. A giddy look briefly crosses her face before her amber-striated willow green eyes roll back in her head as she suddenly falls backward, landing spread eagle on the ground.
[a slew of people's unstun scripts keep trying to cast at Kialeigh]
Evia asks, "Are those the lawyers then, wolf, cheetah, cat, spirit?"
Leafiara lightly says, "Some of you need to calm your usual instincts about magic."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Goldstr says, "Ya Got Jock's best, good job."
Juramis huskily says, "Good evening to you too."
Lithyia whispers something to Thyrabos.
Vaemyr says, "May wish to uhhh not try to cast spells in here."
Kialeigh says, "Settle down.. I'm making it a drinking game."
Gutstorm offers Juramis a tankard of Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Juramis, Missoni asks, "You are well I hope?"
Juramis nods approvingly at Gutstorm.
Juramis accepts Gutstorm's Jock's bitter.
Kialeigh says, "Everytime they say "I object"."
Speaking to Leafiara, Tayler says, "I keep saying they need to make it feed back in a loop, then people might learn."
Citan deeply exclaims, "I'll drink to that!"
Kialeigh says, "Two drinks for any mention of hanging."
Pukk says, "He's here."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dey gotta new joodge?"
Speaking to a yellow-eyed silvery lor mandrake sprouting niveous peonies, Missoni whispers aloud, "Put down the kitten."
Speaking to a huge orange cat, Lylia says, "Ah, the one I have been waiting to see."
Down below, Judge Manard enters and takes a seat.
You also see Judge Manard and a modwir arch.
Kiyna says, "And there is the Judge."
Speaking to Kiyna, Lylia says, "No, he is a cat."
Kialeigh exclaims, "Three if lil peanut mentions his parts have dropped!"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Heddo Joodge."
Someone from the balcony shouts, "Not my Judge!"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Needa drink?"
Vaemyr says, "Again, if anyone doesn't know, you may Watch the Area down below."
Leafiara remarks, "Well, this is already getting off to a fine start."
Juramis nods in agreement at Vaemyr.
Goldstr asks, "Whre be Judge Renpaw?"
Lylia says, "Good question."
Udari says, "I take it this change wasn't approved."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Goldstr exclaims, "Dis be a Amos Judge!"
Down below, Jeshiah stumbles into the chamber, dropping a case in his hands and some parchments go scattering everywhere. Judge Manard sighs, and Jeshiah just bows, before quickly scooping up his parchments.
Lithyia quietly says, "I hope Amos enjoyed the gift I sent him."
Stormyrain says, "And he's been doing a fine job this entire time."
Jeshiah clears his throat.
Jeshiah taps Gutstorm lightly on his shoulder.
Gutstorm waves to Jeshiah.
Jeshiah points at a narrow stairway.
Evia says, "Oh golly."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Oh."
Jeshiah says, "You should go up there good sir."
Gutstorm grunts bashfully, averting his eyes.
Gutstorm stands up.
Seaward Gutstorm just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Juramis huskily asks, "Going well so far?"
Juramis chuckles to himself.
Lithyia says, "It's...going."
Lithyia begins chuckling at Juramis!
Kialeigh exclaims, "Poor Jeshiah... I could just WATCH him all night!"
Lylia notes, "Amos has not been particularly inimical or friendly to the Rooks as an organization; that bodes well for a judge picked by him, surely."
Tikba mildly says, "Nobody has been hanged yet."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Tikba, Tayler says, "Well..."
Jeshiah gazes heavenward.
Tikba mildly clarifies, "Tonight."
Speaking to Tikba, Tayler says, "... well."
Irval says, "Yah, He's a real nut."
Juramis huskily asks, "Watch him, or put him under watch?"
Jeshiah bows to the Judge.
Lithyia quietly says, "I sent both Amos and Thadston scarves with instructions on how....to use them."
Lylia says, "If anyone wishes to stand a bit closer and hear more of the background of the trial, you are more than welcome to join me."
Speaking to Tikba, Tayler says, "You don't know what... you know, nevermind, that was technically last night."
Kialeigh says, "The boy is more entertaining than a court jester."
Juramis huskily says, "He is young enough to send the Adventurer's Guild after, if he went missing."
Juramis smirks.
Jeshiah twists slightly, cracking his spine. He looks much better.
Speaking to Juramis, Irval says, "Bit wet behind the ears, that one."
Speaking to Juramis, Vaemyr says, "Sometimes our youth can be quite surprising and resourceful, not wise to underestimate them at least."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish where da bad joodge gonna hang Leafi."
Some townspeople gather upon the balcony and WATCH the area to observe below.
Speaking to Juramis, Kialeigh exclaims, "Maybe he'll surprise us all. I mean his fake credentials were QUITE impressive!"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish where it be."
Juramis indicates the viewing area as a possible option.
Speaking to Lithyia, Tayler says, "Why do you keep shouting."
Lithyia asks, "Me?"
Jeshiah asks, "Where is Mayor Thadston? Is he still Mayor?"
Jeshiah shrugs.
The Judge says, "He will be here shortly."
Kayse offers Shinann a diamond-cut tumbler of rich amber bourbon.
Lithyia quietly says, "No idea what you mean."
Evia says, "I think the official court people should have to wear curled white wigs."
Speaking indifferently to Shinann, Kayse says, "Close enough."
Vaemyr says, "We might know the results tonight, at some point."
Shinann declines Kayse's offer.
Speaking to Alosaka, Lylia asks, "Are you taking notes on virtues?"
Speaking to Lithyia, Tayler asks, "Really? You have no idea what I MEAN?"
Vaemyr says, "But Thadston would still be mayor for at least a couple more weeks before a new mayor transitions."
Lithyia quietly says, "Not a clue."
Speaking surprisedly to Vaemyr, Leafiara asks, "Wait, that long?"
Vaemyr says, "Well if he doesn't win."
Mourdeyan says, "Unless he is the new Mayor."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Irval says, "Thats IF , he is not re-elected."
Juramis takes some time to WATCH the AREA, observing everything happening in the courtroom with greater detail.
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "That's my understanding."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Leafiara ponders, "Huh."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Pour yershelf a drink."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "There's a lot of things to hand over and transition in those cases, so it makes a lot of sense logistically."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Juramish, ye ever thot to dye Mongo purple?" [Gutstorm's kitten is purple]
Juramis hesitantly says, "No."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "I suppose the transitions are accordingly longer now that it's a two-year cycle."
Speaking to a huge orange cat, Vaemyr asks, "How you doing Mongo, Juramis feeding you well?"
Lithyia says, "Mongo needs a little cat sweater, but I dont have the right needles with me for that."
Kialeigh says, "I think people like the cat better than the man at this point."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Udari says, "I dont think the cat has missed a meal yet."
Speaking amusedly to Kialeigh, Leafiara repeats, "At this point?"
Lylia says, "Cats are sometimes easier to like than men."
Kialeigh says, "He just got a warmer welcome."
Speaking to Lylia, Kiyna asks, "Sometimes?"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dat why me like wimun."
Speaking to Lylia, Mourdeyan says, "D'pends on the man."
Lylia diplomatically says, "I only get to scratch a very few men behind the ears. This is one reason to enjoy cats."
Evia says, "Men have cooties behind their ears, eew."
Speaking to a huge orange cat, Lylia says, "You only love me for my fingernails."
The orange cat rubs up against a veniom-banded oak keg personalized with the image of a mighty titan.
The orange cat purrs.
Juramis agrees with a huge orange cat.
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Yoo goin on a diet Mongo."
The orange cat hisses at Gutstorm.
Lithyia says, "He did not like that."
Mourdeyan says, "Goooood cat."
Mongur raspily says, "Yum."
Mayor Thadston just came through a modwir arch.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "He thank me later when him fit thru the doorsh."
Udari says, "I dont think the cat likes that idea, dwarf."
Jeshiah snaps smartly to attention!
Vaemyr says, "There's Thadston."
Speaking to her rusty red fox squirrel, Kialeigh says, "Shut up, Moose..."
Jeshiah exclaims, "Mayor!"
Thadston says, "Chestnut."
Mongur raspily exclaims, "Meh tired o puma, no nuff meat!"
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Jeshiah clears his throat.
Jeshiah says, "It was...Acorn but..."
Jeshiah shrugs.
Lithyia quietly says, "Thadston.... i hope he liked the scarf I mailed him to go with the socks."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Anyone gotta chair to throw down ad Thadston?"
Juramis turns an ear toward the viewing area.
Juramis takes a moment to observe the viewing area.
Leafiara indicates a folded white lor chair as a possible option.
Vaemyr says, "Well a chestnut is bigger than an Acorn, Thadston's just acknologedging he grew a little."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Lylia says, "Fair point."
Kiyna says, "It's an improvement. A lovely compliment from Thadston, yes."
Speaking to Vaemyr, Tayler says, "Chestnuts explode when you apply a little heat, though."
Opening Statements
The Judge says, "Mayor Thadston, Jeshiah, you will have your opening statements, and then call the first defendant to come speak."
Thadston nods.
Jeshiah says, "Opening sta...."
Jeshiah says, "Yes, of course."
Speaking to Tayler, Vaemyr asks, "Do... acorns not?"
Jeshiah nods.
Thadston twists his head slightly, cracking his neck. He looks relieved.
Speaking to Vaemyr, Tayler says, "I have no idea."
Juramis huskily says, "Opening statements are about to start."
The orange cat sits down.
Alosaka says, "I suppose this sets up a good appeal for poor counsel later."
Juramis agrees with a huge orange cat.
Juramis sits down.
Thadston slowly empties his lungs.
Mongur raspily says, "Will be quiet den, as long cat stays der."
Thadston recites:
"Over the course of this trial you are going to get the opportunity to hear from several people who look and sound like your friends, or your family, or your once trusted allies. They are going to perch themselves on high, polish their feathers and words to a sheen, and sing of their heroics in a world full of chaos and indecisiveness."
Lithyia quietly says, "I do not like that man."
Juramis indicates the viewing area as a possible option.
Thadston recites:
"They will claim that the ends justify the means, so long as those ends are for the betterment of Wehnimer's Landing. They will try to paint your world into streaks of grey, trying to influence you to question your own morals and actions. They will tell you that sometimes one must get mud on their face and blood on their hands to carry the burden of everyone else."
Thadston recites:
"They are liars. Selfish ones at that. They will color outside the lines to justify their existence. They want to be able to sleep at night just as much as you and I do. They will preach whatever gilt-hued defense they can try to obscure the fact they live and operate within the shadows, beyond our sight and beyond our laws. Who are they to decide what actions need to be taken to protect the town? Are they elected officials?"
Leafiara glances between Kayse and Kiyna.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Shound like Thadston done dish shorta thing afore, and here me thot he wudda uncultured brute."
Kiyna glances at Kayse.
Thadston recites:
"Well, actually, yes, some of them are. Old and new. It wasn't enough to just sit and peck in the underbelly of the town, they wanted to reach to the highest branch and claim that too. That is the definition of corruption. Are the Silver Gryphons inept and feeble? Can they not protect this town and fight the good fight while still adhering to a code that keeps chaos from running rampant?"
Kayse remarks, "The only thing gilt-hued are my shoes." [OOC note: I'll show each character's LOOK when their turn comes up.]
Lylia whispers something to Gutstorm.
Thadston recites:
"Of course, they can fight, protect and defend us. They are strong, they are honorable, they are an example of defending and protecting without sacrificing virtue. Are the Drakes Vanguard immobilized and scattered to the winds? No. They train, they recruit, they rally, they stand ready to defend Wehnimer's Landing's gates and walls and all of her people. Many rush to defend our people, but they do not skulk back into the shadows when they are done and work to undermine our town and our alliances."
Thadston recites:
"So when the Rooks stand up and try to tell you they do what they must because no one else will, they are again liars. They do what they do because they are degenerate and would rather bloody their hands in the shadows at the expense of others than stand firm in the light and fight monsters by not becoming one themselves. It's time to reject their approach, hold them accountable, and bring real attention to our true heroes."
Speaking drunkenly to Aerocus, Gutstorm slurs, "Him da bad guy of da shtory."
Thadston nods at Jeshiah.
Thadston says, "You're up boy."
Juramis leans forward.
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Jeshiah says, "Well, let me just say...."
Jeshiah says, "Everything you'd accused my brothers and sisters of, you are guilty yourself. But you're not on trial today. Not yet at least."
Vaemyr says, "Yet even if everything Thadston said is true... he mentioned not one crime. Tis not a crime to meet in private, as bad as it might seem, tis not a crime to lie..."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Ye rooksh shoulda got Faerinn to repertent ye."
Irval asks, "He's really gonna take that approach?"
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Kialeigh says, "He said yet."
Lithyia says, "I'm simply too tired. Good luck to you that need it."
Speaking appreciatively to Lithyia, Leafiara says, "None needed, but thank you."
Jeshiah says, "I won't put the Rooks into little neat boxes that make it easy for you to generalize them and make them out to be monsters. It's best they each be allowed their own statements, their own words to show you that you're wrong on every charge, and every accusation."
Kialeigh says, "50k on him somehow pulling the best defender from his butt and knocking this judge on his butt."
Charges and Punishment
The Judge says, "Before the first defendent is called, Mayor Thadston will you announce the charges and the punishment you're seeking?"
Thadston nods.
Thadston says, "I am charging each of them with Impropriety and Conspiracy. The suspects have failed to observe the standards of the law of Wehnimer's Landing and their behavior has been in conflict with the expectations of law-abiding citizens in regards to their involvement and membership within the criminal organization known as the Brotherhood of Rooks. They have met in secret, on several occasions, and conspired to undermine the Landing's defenders and their allies, threatening both stability and peace in the region."
Thadston says, "I am charging each of them with Hooliganism. The suspects are accused of violent behavior given the nature of the Brotherhood of Rooks and their attempted plots to cause more damage and violence against Wehnimer's Landing allies, threatening to once again endanger stability and peace in the region."
Tikba mildly murmurs, "Stability."
Thadston says, "I am charging them all with Disturbing the Peace. As related to the Brotherhood of Rooks, they are in direct conflict with the law of Wehnimer's Landing. Their existence, their membership, their covert actions and conspiring threatens to disrupt the peace of the town and its citizens. Their confrontational and often violent actions invite unnecessary attention and attract enemies both foreign and domestic because of their presence and their operations."
Udari says, "Interesting."
Gutstorm whispers sommething to Leafiara.
Perigourd whispers something to Missoni.
Thadston says, "I am seeking punishment in the form of all official titles and positions stripped, time served, hefty fines, and banishment from future political positions."
Juramis quietly says, "I suspect many chairs were broken in the process of scribing such eloquent words from the Mayor. I am not sure how any of the clerks would survive it."
Mourdeyan says, "Gads."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Think he go after dem clothing too?"
Irval says, "Least not another lynching."
Chandrellia says, "Wow, I thought it was going to be rough."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Tikba says, "It would not fit him."
Goldstr exclaims, "Nicely put!"
Pukk's Defense
Jeshiah exclaims, "Our first defendant...Pukk! Come on down!"
You see Pukk the Gentleman. He appears to be a Human. He is tall. He appears to be an adult. He has silver-flecked sapphire blue eyes and smoothly tanned skin. He has shoulder length, lush onyx black hair worn in elaborate braids. He has small birthmark in the shape of a lute on the apple of his cheek and distinct bow-shaped lips. He has a series of smoke-hued feathers inked upon his wrist, and a tall grinning gremlin tattoo adorned with a lute-shaped birthmark on his neck. He is in good shape. He is wearing a golden phoenix pin, a dark red vaalorn lute symbol accented with gold, a loosely laced white linen shirt with gathered cuffs, an auburn crystal-inset platinum ring, some ebon leather pants with a thin vaalin belt, and a pair of sleek black sealskin boots.
Pukk nods.
Pukk sighs.
Tayler says, "Don't worry you all chose an excellent Barrister to defend yourselves, he's said like, a sentence."
Pukk just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Chandrellia says, "You got this."
Pukk nods to Jeshiah in greeting.
Jeshiah applauds Pukk.
Thadston glances at Pukk.
Pukk says, "Greeting Judge."
Speaking to Tayler, Leafiara whispers aloud, "It's more like he chose us."
Vaemyr whispers something to Kiyna.
Pukk says, "Acorn."
Pukk says, "Thaddy."
Jeshiah says, "Please take a moment, state your defense, whatever you wish."
Jeshiah nods at Pukk.
Juramis huskily asks, "Where did you find this Jeshiah fellow?"
Pukk says, "I stand before you an innocent man that was hanged without first having a trial."
Alosaka says, "I think he found us."
Leafiara reiterate, "He found us."
Speaking to Juramis, Vaemyr asks, "He volunteered?"
Evia says, "Fell from a tree or something."
Pukk says, "Without a say."
Pukk says, "And this is my time."
Irval says, "He was saved from a pit methinks."
Tikba mildly says, "In the streets, it would seem."
Juramis huskily asks, "A volunteer representative in a treason trial?"
Leafiara nods at Juramis.
Juramis huskily says, "Bold."
Pukk asks, "You claim we are all of those things. But I ask you. Where is your evidence?"
Speaking to Juramis, Kayse says, "He is Acorn--he has been a part of the Rooks for awhile."
Kialeigh says, "Or calculated."
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Anything goed in Whemnimmersh."
Juramis nods understandingly at Kayse.
Speaking quietly to Juramis, Raelee adds, "... with no formal legal education."
Pukk says, "We cleaned up an organization and changed to defend a town that needed defending."
Speaking hesitantly to Raelee, Kayse says, "Yes, there is that."
Juramis grins at Raelee.
Thadston asks, "Were we not being defended?"
Speaking to Raelee, Perigourd says, "He mentioned a school in Nydds when I asked him."
Pukk says, "We were. We also still needed help."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Irval asks, "Fill er up?"
Gutstorm yells, "Tell him the mayor not doin it Pukk, sho yoo had to!"
Pukk says, "We jumped in and filled the gaps."
Juramis glances at Gutstorm.
Pukk says, "We laid down our lives."
Evia says, "Order in the peanut gallery."
Pukk says, "As did other defenders."
Speaking to Perigourd, Raelee says, "The institution he named does not exist. He was hoping no one would recognize that fact."
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Shumtime me inner voice...be me outter voice."
Speaking to Raelee, Perigourd says, "Ah."
Pukk says, "Gryphons, Drakes and everybody."
Juramis huskily says, "On the first defense testimony? At least wait until the second."
Juramis nods at Gutstorm.
Speaking to Raelee, Alosaka says, "I never would have imagined."
Pukk says, "But we cleaned up our ranks."
Pukk says, "So what if we are secretive."
Pukk says, "That is not an offense."
Thadston asks, "Have you ever attacked any town guards or contracted defenders of any capacity?"
Thadston peers quizzically at Pukk.
Pukk says, "I have."
Pukk says, "I will admit that."
Kialeigh says, "Most likely as the peanut gallery gets drunker... it'll get worse."
Jeshiah glances at Pukk.
Jeshiah squirms.
Pukk says, "I paid that price too."
Pukk says, "I was brought before a judge and found guilty and paid my dues."
Juramis huskily says, "The reiver bitters were rather tasty."
Thadston says, "Oh, someone's father and brother is dead. But you paid the price."
Thadston says, "So we're good."
Thadston rolls his eyes.
Evia says, "Ooh."
Pukk says, "Mainly it was imperials and I did take them as enemies."
Thadston asks, "Who is going to defend the town against you?"
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "It had chimanimaminamin."
Pukk says, "But I did pay my dues by law."
Pukk says, "Same as those who will defend the town against you."
Thadston says, "I'm glad life is cheap to you that it can be redeemed by some silvers."
Pukk points up.
Pukk says, "Them."
Thadston asks, "Is that you in there Amos?"
Thadston smirks.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Wot?"
Irval exclaims, "My skull!"
Mourdeyan says, "There somethin you can take for that."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Why yen gibbit to me!"
Juramis huskily says, "Fighting words."
Juramis nods to the viewing area.
Irval exclaims, "Ta fill it up fer me!"
Xorus says, "Needling him."
Alosaka says, "He is betraying a rather cavalier attitude toward the lives he took."
Irval says, "Here you can have that one."
Pukk chuckles.
Kialeigh says, "It's a drink glass."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "It empty."
Pukk says, "I cannot dispute your words."
Pukk says, "They are right."
Speaking mildly to Alosaka, Tikba says, "Yes, but he is the mayor."
Jeshiah asks, "Perhaps...you have prepared someone to speak on your behalf?"
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Pukk.
Tikba says, "No doubt he felt it was his right."
Jeshiah glances at a narrow stairway.
Pukk says, "But I will have to make amends."
Pukk says, "No."
Speaking to Tikba, Alosaka says, "I agree Thadston is cavalier, but I meant Pukk in this case."
Pukk says, "I will say my peace with my heart."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "You are the danger here."
Thadston asks, "A heart that still beats. Know who doesn't have that?"
Pukk says, "You went mad."
[Asthenea comes to the balcony and drops a dozen or so flagons of Dragonsdraught ale]
Thadston says, "The guards you murdered."
Irval frowns at Astrilyn.
Asthenea softly exclaims, "There!"
A bolt of lightning streaks down from the sky and strikes Asthenea!
... 25 points of damage!
Heavy jolt to back shoots up spine. Sympathetic pains almost as bad.
She is stunned!
A tremendous crack of thunder follows instantly!
A chill breeze swirls about Kialeigh as she gestures and utters a phrase of magic.
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "You had us murdered as well."
Speaking to Irval, Astrilyn says, "Not me."
Evia says, "Uncalled for."
Mourdeyan exclaims, "Whot tha!"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "You are just as guilty."
Juramis glances up.
Lylia mutters, "Wasteful idiot."
Juramis looks over at Diablic and shakes his head. [he was trying to unstun]
Kialeigh says, "Now we're all gonna be singing Singing Sam..."
Juramis huskily says, "That won't work."
Kialeigh says, "Thanks."
Pukk says, "You went above your authority."
Thadston says, "...for crimes."
Thadston asks, "What did the guards do?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "You have to prove them first."
Thadston asks, "What were their crimes?"
Thadston says, "I'm curious."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "No good deed goed unpuncheded."
Thadston peers quizzically at Pukk.
Chandrellia says, "Please caution your spells while here, I wuld like to hear what is being said, this is a trial against innocents citizens."
Kialeigh asks, "Unshocked to the core?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "I didn't kill guards. I killed imperial soldiers that I thought were fighting against the town."
Speaking amiably to Chandrellia, Leafiara says, "Well, potentially innocent. That's to be determined."
Asthenea softly says, "Sorry for the noise. was gunna be tough to sit through sober."
Pukk says, "But that was then."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Tayler says, "Technically he literally just admitted to murder."
Lylia stresses, "A trial, not a wine-sink or a circus."
Evia says, "Guys, c'mon a modicum of semi-quiet with the movements please."
Pukk asks, "What new evidence do you have against me?"
Juramis makes a shushing sound!
Speaking to Tayler, Chandrellia says, "Just as every person inthis balconay has at one point or another."
Tikba carefully says, "He believed them to be enemies in war."
Thadston asks, "Oh, you thought they were fighting against the town?"
Perigourd says, "He killed imperial soldiers the night Thadston raided the den." [technically, that night, he attacked but didn't do enough damage to kill the soldiers; Pukk's referencing an entirely different night when he was actually killing them]
Speaking drunkenly to Asthenea, Gutstorm slurs, "Neat trick me learn, iffin ye do it while inviddable, no one know yoo dooned it, dat how me do it in town shquare."
Tikba says, "Or so he claims."
Juramis glances at a flagon of Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis picks up a flagon of Dragonsdraught ale.
Thadston asks, "Because a Thorn told you? Or some little pamphlet?"
Juramis shrugs.
Pukk says, "I saw them as invaders."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Tayler says, "I'm not on trial, he is."
Elexya innocently says, "I've never killed anyone."
Lylia says, "...Imperial guards are not enemies of the town. Or invaders."
Speaking softly to Gutstorm, Asthenea says, "Good tip."
Thadston asks, "What if I told you I saw you as an invader?"
Speaking to Tayler, Chandrellia says, "Doesnt change my stance on innocent."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "No. Because that is the nature of the beast."
Juramis points at the viewing area.
Mongur raspily says, "No time squabble, listen."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "That is your right. But I am still a citizen."
Thadston says, "It's not 5198. This isn't Hochstib."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Am gonna git more Bitter, ye need one Juramisht?"
Perigourd says, "Indeed."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "So again. What new evidence do you have against me with those charges?"
Tikba politely says, "I am sure they are free to sign our book, just as any visitor to the Landing is."
Thadston says, "Ah, you're right. It's okay if you kill allied non-citizens because of your perception."
Thadston asks, "New? Do I need any more than that?"
Thadston says, "How flippant with the life of people you are."
Pukk says, "You need to prove what I did was against this town."
Thadston asks, "Tell me about the wagon raid. What did you plan to do?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "The same is said about you."
Thadston asks, "Were you going to kill more "invaders" then too?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "What wagon raid?"
Irval says, "Yah probably best not to incriminate oneself further while on the witness stand."
Thadston says, "Don't be stupid."
Thadston says, "The ones you were planning on supply wagons. The maps. In the Den."
Mourdeyan says, "Too late."
Pukk asks, "You need to state your case. What wagon raid?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "That was just a map."
Kialeigh says, "Yeah yer best defense is.. I dunno what yer talking about? I dunno what yer saying."
Thadston asks, "You deny you were not plotting to raid imperial supply wagons coming to the settlement?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "You presumed it was a raid."
Mourdeyan says, "Evidently."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "My main concern was if we had this infomation so did the Remnants."
Pukk says, "And at first I felt like just leaving it as is."
Pukk says, "But."
Pukk says, "I didn't want the Remnants to frame us."
Pukk says, "That was my concern."
Pukk says, "If we had this info. So do they."
Thadston says, "Not necessarily true."
Pukk says, "Doesn't mean it's false either. Could be."
Thadston asks, "So what was being discussed in the meeting?"
Irval says, "Conjecture."
Pukk says, "They seems to one up us all the time."
Thadston peers quizzically at Pukk.
Gutstorm offers Juramis a tankard of Jock's bitter.
Udari quietly says, "Very good points."
Juramis declines Gutstorm's offer.
Juramis shows Gutstorm his Dragonsdraught ale.
Pukk says, "Nothing really. We didn't want to be monsters like them."
Speaking drunkenly to Alosaka, Gutstorm slurs, "Didnt bring enuff fer everbuddy."
Pukk says, "I didn't want that at all."
Evia asks, "Uh, why was the defendant not sworn in?"
Pukk says, "I wanted to keep our names clean."
Thadston says, "Just had a map. Sitting around. Chatting in a secret Den. No plans."
Irval says, "As clean as muddy water."
Speaking drunkenly to Evia, Gutstorm slurs, "Wot me mish>?"
Thadston asks, "Were you going to try to stop the Remnants? Why did you have a map in the first place?"
Juramis huskily says, "I'm sure there will be enough swearing by the time this is over."
Mongur raspily asks, "What, have trial started?"
Juramis points at the viewing area.
Juramis nods at Mongur.
Jeshiah squirms.
Pukk says, "The map was supposedly to be the route the supply would take. So the Remnants get them. Why should I care. But wait. What if they pose as us."
Pukk says, "What if we are blamed."
Pukk says, "That is my concern."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Evia says, "That part where they swear to tell the truth."
Pukk says, "That information was leaked."
Thadston asks, "So did you alert my office? The Marshal? Elidal?"
Pukk says, "We just got the map."
Pukk says, "You raided and presumed our guilt and had us hung."
Thadston asks, "So what did you intend to do with the information?"
Speaking to Evia, Tayler says, "Whyever would that matter? I can swear to you that I'll tell the truth until I'm out of breath but it doesn't mean I will."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Why Jeshiah down dere if he not gonna interrgrate Thadston den?"
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "We hadn't even had time to think about it. We know how inept you are. If we wanted to protect our name we would have to stop them."
Pukk says, "We could go to the militia. But they protect the town."
Irval asks, "Inept?"
Thadston asks, "Do your legs hurt? From trying to tread water so quickly?"
Thadston smirks.
Speaking to Evia, Tayler says, "Well, I would, I'm pretty honest. Mostly honest. Usually."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "If all you have are taunts. Then you are the one treading water."
Thadston asks, "So you'd show up in secret to the caravans to make sure the remnants didn't attack?"
Thadston asks, "Was that a likely outcome?"
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kialeigh says, "Thadston ain't on trial yet."
Tikba says, "He has tried twice now to capture a dying woman and failed both times. You must judge his competence for yourself."
Thadston says, "You literally just called me inept. Let's not pretend a high road exists with us."
Pukk says, "Maybe watch. Ask them to turn back. But we never had a chance to even discuss it."
Kialeigh says, "I ain't drunk enough for that.."
Pukk says, "Seems you jumped the gun."
Thadston asks, "Watch?"
Speaking to Tayler, Evia says, "If a lie from a defendent is proved it is perjury, another crime."
Thadston shakes his head.
Pukk says, "You didn't even bother putting us on trial before presuming much."
Pukk asks, "Can you prove that isn't my motive?"
Thadston says, "Unbelievable. But it makes sense. Just watch them kill imperial invaders. If you can't do it yourself, you'd prefer to watch."
Pukk says, "If they tried to blame us we would stop them. Kill them if need be."
Lylia whispers something to Kayse.
Thadston says, "I have no other questions. You've already admitted your guilt to murder and negligence."
Kialeigh says, "Murder..."
Speaking to Evia, Tayler says, "You'll have to show me the Landings codified book of laws sometime, if you can find it. It's existence or lack-thereof is one of the reasons a lot of us are here."
Jeshiah clears his throat.
Kayse whispers something to Lylia.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Sho who did Pukk kill?"
Pukk says, "I already paid for that too. Those are old crimes."
Jeshiah exclaims, "Pukk!"
Pukk says, "I'm cleared of them now."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Chandrellia says, "Imperial soldiers."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Udari says, "An imperial enemy I think."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "Sec please Acorn."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "But dey are not ofm dish town sho dat no matter."
Speaking to Tayler, Evia says, "Its in the RSN department, Tayler."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "What of the other allegations?"
Jeshiah sighs.
Lylia says, "Old crimes do not get cleared; they remain, even if time has been served. What is done is done; they are not erased."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk asks, "Can you prove all those?"
Speaking to Lylia, Corjoy asks, "But we are not here to relitigate them, nonetheless. No?"
Pukk says, "Just us having a secret club that you aren't invited to doesn't break the law."
Juramis glances at Lylia.
Thadston says, "I'm not required to question you about every single allegation. The Judge will decide if the evidence presented to him is enough to warrant conviction and punishment."
Juramis furrows his brow.
Speaking to Corjoy, Lylia agrees, "Quite so."
Thadston says, "No one has the time to ask ten thousand questions."
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "Just because you are in lust with Casi doesn't mean you can run amok."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Jeshiah's Followup with Pukk
Jeshiah glances at Pukk.
Jeshiah exclaims, "Pukk!"
Speaking quietly to Tayler, Elexya murmurs, "There is such thing as saying too much."
Jeshiah clears his throat.
Speaking to Thadston, Pukk says, "It is your job to show the evidence in front of me."
Perigourd says, "Not comporting himself very well."
Jeshiah asks, "Just recently, you announced you were a member of the Rooks, did you not?"
Speaking to Elexya, Tayler says, "That was... a while ago."
Lylia says, "That is...ungracious. To say the least."
Pukk says, "If you cannot then please stop now."
Udari says, "Lusting over a woman can really mess ones mind up."
Xorus asks, "Is it a law or merely custom in these parts to not engage in double jeopardy?"
Speaking to Perigourd, Leafiara murmurs, "His answers were significantly better in the practice session than now."
Speaking to Elexya, Tayler says, "The time to stop saying too much, that is."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "I am. But not the old Rooks. A new one."
Speaking to Perigourd, Kippe asks, "Are you surprised?"
Speaking to Leafiara, Perigourd says, "The truth is often best."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "Different bird, same name."
Jeshiah says, "Of course, of course. The old Rooks are dead, or, Remnants, if you will."
Pukk adopts an agreeable expression.
Speaking to Perigourd, Leafiara says, "Oh, it's been the truth both in practice and now, but... his wording and framing is a bit off at the moment."
Jeshiah asks, "Can you tell me about some of the things people have said to you, when approached about perhaps joining the Brotherhood of Rooks?"
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Pukk.
Pukk says, "We need to do what Thaddy cannot. We have to protect the town."
Pukk says, "Some have approached and are dissatisfied and want to help protect the town."
Irval says, "Think the pressure has gotten to Pukk."
Irval says, "He's cracking like an egg."
Kialeigh says, "He is being truthful to a fault."
Tikba says, "He has not tried to sell you even once."
Jeshiah says, "I see."
Pukk says, "They don't like the child-king's temper tantrums."
Tayler says, "I think he might have confused his trial as a recruiting campaign."
Jeshiah asks, "So it's fair to say that, many of the townspeople feel unprotected and unrepresented?"
Pukk says, "They call in question his sanity."
Pukk says, "Some. Some I'm sure feel protected."
Jeshiah nods.
Jeshiah says, "For those who do not feel protected..."
Pukk says, "But we will accept if they put the defense first."
Irval says, "Yah protected like an arrow to the face."
Evia says, "Reminds me of the protection money days of ye olde rooks eh."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Am need protection from flying chairsh!"
Kialeigh says, "Don't forget the desks."
Jeshiah asks, "Which position in the town do you think is primarily responsible for protecting and representing the people?"
Speaking to Gutstorm, Tayler says, "Go sit in the middle of all of the giants."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "All of us."
Jeshiah sighs.
Jeshiah asks, "Which position in the town do you think is primarily responsible for protecting and representing the people?"
Jeshiah winks at Pukk.
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "I'm sure there are officials but we are all responsible."
Jeshiah sighs.
Evia says, "Heh."
Irval says, "Objection, leading."
Jeshiah asks, "Which position in the town do you think is primarily responsible for protecting and representing the people?"
Juramis can offer the viewing area only a blank expression.
Thadston says, "I think he means me Pukk."
Pukk says, "Council is one."
Jeshiah applauds Thadston.
Pukk says, "Mayor and militia."
Leafiara asks, "...the Mayor rather than the Marshal?" [Leafi didn't catch the word "representing" in there]
Pukk says, "It is all tied together."
Tikba mildly says, "Not whom I would have named."
Speaking to Leafiara, Kippe offers, "Both?"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Da mayor ish a paper pusher job, not a fitin job."
Stormyrain says, "That has never been true in our town."
Pukk chuckles.
Tikba mildly says, "The Mayor is a citizen, certainly, and bears the responsibility that every citizen does."
Stormyrain says, "Every Mayor I have known, from Walkar on, has been in concert with protection of the town at every step. Including with the militia."
Jeshiah asks, "So if a majority of the town feels unprotected and unrepresented, thus forcing the natural evolution of the Brotherhood fo Rooks to rise and fill the gap to protect the people...wouldn't you say that is in fact an honorable thing?"
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Pukk.
Pukk says, "It is a government but it has too much tape."
Perigourd asks, "The Mayor appoints the marshal, no?"
Speaking to Perigourd, Stormyrain says, "No."
Speaking to Stormyrain, Perigourd asks, "How is the marshal appointed then?"
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "I would hope so. But honor depends on each person."
Pukk says, "I want to defend the town."
Pukk says, "That is honorable."
Jeshiah says, "It really is."
Jeshiah nods at Pukk.
Speaking to Stormyrain, Vaemyr asks, "Previous Marshal usually promotes a new marshal if there is one I think? Or the militia nominates and chooses?"
Pukk says, "I want nothing more than a free landing. Free from a mad child-king."
Stormyrain says, "It is the intent that it will be an elected position."
Jeshiah asks, "Would it be fair to assume that, if such a gap exists, forcing the hands of others to defend the town, that the Mayor himself may be derelict of duty?"
Lylia says, "Then what a good thing there are voting booths."
Jeshiah peers quizzically at Pukk.
Stormyrain says, "I was appointed because Thadston was elected Mayor."
Irval says, "Its interesting he keeps using the Krolvin Tyraxx's words."
Evia says, "Wantin' ain't gettin, ma used to say."
Pukk sighs.
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "I think so. yes."
Kippe echoes, "... the intent."
Jeshiah says, "I think so too. I really do."
Speaking to Stormyrain, Vaemyr says, "Ahh, I didn't know it was going to be elected."
Pukk says, "He has lost his way. He lost his mind."
Jeshiah says, "So in theory, your crimes you are being accused of, are honestly indirectly the fault of the town's leadership, primarily...the current office of the Mayor."
Chandrellia says, "I dont see that happening for a long time, Stormy is a very capable Marshal, and I am honored that she is."
Tayler says, "Those are some... logical gymnastics."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "If we're having to step up for him. Then yes."
Mourdeyan asks, "Who's on trial here? Thadston or the Rooks?"
Jeshiah says, "I have no further questions or statements. I believe I've made my case that Pukk is a hero, not a monster with metal arms."
Jeshiah nods at Pukk.
Tikba murmurs, "Who indeed?"
Jeshiah says, "Exactly."
Thadston glances at Jeshiah.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Da town on trial if ye axed me."
Pukk bows respectfully before Jeshiah, his eyes fixed firmly on the ground.
Lylia says, "I cannot fault Jeshiah for trying to stitch together some cloth from the tatters he was given."
Irval says, "Lot of deflection."
Closing Words
The Judge leans forward, "Pukk, did you have any final words to say?"
Pukk says, "Thank you Acorn."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Cuz clearly we all shee thing diffrint."
Tayler asks, "Is it too late to find a new barrister?"
Pukk says, "Yes. I love my town. I will always put my life to defend it. Even if it is from the corruption within."
Speaking to Lylia, Evia says, "Defintely not high quality flax."
Pukk glances at Thadston.
Speaking to Tayler, Lylia says, "I may know a man..."
Pukk says, "Or a mad child king."
Irval says, "I wouldnt of murdered them if you did your job better , logic. Fails in the eyes of the law."
Speaking to Tayler, Chandrellia says, "I'm happy with who we have, and as you so stated earlier, its not you on trialk."
Thadston rolls his eyes.
Pukk bows respectfully, his eyes fixed firmly on the ground.
Speaking to Chandrellia, Tayler says, "I'm happy that you're happy."
Evia says, "Or an organized crime group."
Thadston waves his hand in a dismissive gesture.
Pukk says, "Thank you for giving me time to air my feeling."
Aidaen huskily says, "Well at least he spoke in full sentences."
Pukk says, "I would also like to say one more thing."
Irval says, "And as Tikba said, didn't offer to sell me."
Aidaen says, "Not really the time or place to be airing feelings though in the middle of your trial."
Pukk says, "When Thadston was first in court. He referred to Acorn...Jeshiah as a boy. He was very disrespectful."
Pukk says, "You are trying to do a job. Thank you."
Pukk bows to Jeshiah.
Gutstorm yells, "Kudos to Jeshiah!"
Pukk says, "This is a court and I'm showing my respect as well."
Juramis looks at Gutstorm with concern.
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Pukk says, "That is all."
Goldstr exclaims, "An kisin butt!"
Pukk says, "Thank you your honor."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Pukk says, "Thank you again friend."
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Everbutter need lil encourichmint."
Pukk asks, "Am I dismissed your honor?"
Juramis huskily says, "I enjoy mint from time to time."
Juramis nods at Gutstorm.
The Judge nods.
Pukk bows.
Pukk says, "Thank you."
Pukk just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Kayse's Defense
Thadston twists his head slightly, cracking his neck. He looks relieved.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Yoo not dead!"
Jeshiah glances at a narrow stairway.
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Pukk says, "It's still too soon."
Jeshiah exclaims, "Councilor Kayse!"
You see Town Councilor Kayse Thaellian the Firefly of the Darkstone Bay Consortium. She appears to be an Aelotoi of the Vaer'sah Clan. She is moderately tall and has a curvaceous figure. She appears to be youthful. She has voluminously lashed, viridian-specked pear green eyes and freckle-dusted, smooth olive skin. She has waist-length, lustrous ultramarine hair with the sides plaited and pulled back by a caged glass barrette imprisoning some butterscotch jasper fireflies, the length falling over her shoulders in mercurial waves. She has strong and toned features, yet still possesses alluring feminine qualities enhanced by her soft full blush-hued lips. She has a pair of oval niveous-veined sparkling champagne wings with each dangling a mistwood lily charm nestled in gold-swept emerald leaves from their lower edges. She has a series of smoke-hued feathers inked along her collarbone, an inked vine laden with blossoms on her waist, a kohl-outlined feather quill on her wrist, a multi-colored ink splotched lily on her arm, a primitively inked white jagged heart on her finger, an onyx-hued palm print inked on her wrist, and an ink-stroked flaming violet edged in gilt on her finger. She has occasional faint traces of ivory-striated nightshade petals flowing beneath her visible skin. She gives off a tempestuous demeanor. She is in good shape. She is wearing a glass choker caging a moonlight cactus-bloom, a corseted nipped-waist charcoal on slate bourde jacket, a fitted thistle grey tweed vest over an open-collared goldenrod cotton shirt with cuffed sleeves, a woven vine bracelet intertwined with amaranth cymes, a treble of helical zydris branchlets encircling the right index finger, some high-waisted kohl linen trousers with crisp pleats, and a pair of saffron chainsil pompes lofted on gilt-spurred heels.
Kayse slowly empties her lungs.
Town Councilor Kayse just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Gutstorm yells, "Hanger!"
Juramis huskily says, "Have some ale, if you wish to relax the nerves."
Jeshiah bows to Kayse.
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Thadston glances at Kayse.
Kayse nods to Jeshiah in greeting.
Kayse greets, "Judge Manard."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "She in league wit Amos."
Kayse casually offers, "Mayor Andrews."
The Judge nods, "Your statement of defense, please."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kialeigh says, "Been there.. done that."
Juramis glances at Gutstorm.
Kayse says, "Very well."
(Kayse stands in the middle of the room, she adjusts the hem on her grey tweed vest before exhaling a slow breath.)
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Ready fer dat bitter yet?"
Kayse begins, "A few weeks ago, I was asked what virtue I hold most important."
(Kayse gazes up towards the balcony and nods slightly to Alosaka.)
Kayse folds her wings across her back.
Juramis huskily says, "Working towards prosperity is not a problem for you, I hope."
Kayse continues, "I responded courage, because in my eyes, courage is not just heroic deeds and doing what is right..."
Kayse confidently says, "But sometimes it is the courage to do what is wrong when needed to make things right."
Juramis huskily says, "Hmm, not quite."
Juramis nods once at Gutstorm.
Kayse states, "It is the courage to walk a path alone in order to correct the course."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Kayse smiles brightly as her eyes scan the balcony and meet with Tikba's.
Kayse appreciatively says, "And it is the courage to keep someone's secret for the greater good of your people and home."
(Kayse's eyes make contact with Stormyrain's up in the balcony, she gives the sylvan a respectful nod.)
Kayse observes, "Over the past few months, I believe the definitions of right and wrong have been thrown around quite a bit, especially with the barony knocking against our palisades."
Speaking drunkenly to Juramis, Gutstorm slurs, "Well me am a found of Da Darkshtone bay Conshorshum and shtill not recieve me royalties, sho yah...me waitin to git rich."
Kayse rhetorically asks, "There are mixed reviews whether certain groups around Wehnimer's or even the Empire itself is good or evil. But who defines that?"
Kayse casually speculates, "When it comes down to it, what one person sees as noble or horrible actions are different from someone else's."
Speaking drunkenly to Xorus, Gutstorm slurs, "Amirite?"
Kayse gives a sidelong glance at Thadston.
(Kayse pauses a moment to collect her thoughts, her expression pensive.)
Kayse steadily explains, "The problems that plague Wehnimer's Landing are often clear but the solutions to them are not always black and white. Sometimes it takes diving into the gray area to reach an accord and take care of our common threat."
Kayse thoughtfully elaborates, "Not all problems can be solved with a pen and quill or even a sword and shield--it takes individuals to do what others will not when the time calls for it."
Juramis huskily says, "Wealth comes in many forms."
Kayse bluntly inquires, "Why do we need the Rooks?"
Kayse glances appraisingly around the room.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Ye aint shellin me on dat happinesh nonshinch."
Kayse informs, "It takes those like the Rooks to get their hands dirty so those can live in this town and have the freedom we have been preaching about the past eight months."
Kayse discloses, "We freed Kharusa from her krolvin slavers." Kayse pauses and shrugs indifferently, "Perhaps a job anyone could have done. But we kept her safe and nursed her back to health. Rooks escorted Tyrrax through the tunnels, in cooperation with Mayor Andrews in order to safely exchange Tyrrax for Kharusa's father." (...and the militiaman Rian.)
Juramis takes a moment to observe the viewing area.
Kayse settles her gaze on Thadston, watching him intently.
Kayse proclaims, "I organized and led a mission to capture Bodohal. Although stemming from the Rooks, I held meetings to organize a town effort to include all against someone terrorizing our town and murdering our people."
Kayse's expression is ponderous as she chews on one side of her lip.
Kayse considers, "I taunted Bodohal with the offer of having dinner with a future baron and penned the letter to Elidal to set up the meeting. We worked as Rooks, knights, townsfolk, militia, and Imperials for a common goal."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me think Thadston gonna have him hamsh full wit dish one."
Kayse repeats, "Why do we need the Rooks?"
Kayse thoughtfully taps a finger against her lips.
Kayse passionately says, "We have defended our gates against enemies such as Gnul, rescued our people from slavers, and continued to help make Wehnimer's the best it can be."
Kayse firmly says, "I can confidently say I do not have blood on my hands for my involvement in the Rooks. I have advocated for no violence."
Kayse admits, "It is true I was infiltrating the Rooks for Amos." Kayse tilts her head upward towards the balcony, "Despite this fact, I believe the Rooks or people like them are a necessity in the balance of our town. And so does Amos."
Leafiara raises an eyebrow.
Chandrellia blinks.
Kayse reminds, "When the Imperial encampment was first set up, the town council approved a weapons deal. In fact, I got Elidal to raise the percentage from twenty to twenty five percent."
Chandrellia glances at Leafiara.
Leafiara squints.
Pukk gasps.
Chandrellia sighs.
Kayse discloses, "When we were first considering it, Casiphia brought it up at a Rook meeting. She did not want the deal approved, especially since the other end of the deal was guarding the caravans for the settlers."
Kayse recalls, "I fought with her on it and was told I was soft now for considering what would be the best for the town."
(Kayse's upper lip curls upward into a smirk and she narrows her eyes.)
Chandrellia mutters, "Damn Samfelted twice."
Evia asks, "This some kinda campaign speech?"
Kayse stresses, "Yes, I did not want innocents hurt, but the financial gain for our town to help it blossom was important. As well as establish a relationship with a barony next door that seems inevitable."
(Kayse casually adjusts the cuffs of her cotton shirt as she speaks.)
Tikba mildly asks, "Is that not the purpose of this trial?"
Thadston frowns.
Kayse frankly persuades, "Though difference of opinions happen in every organization and I continued to keep Wehnimer's best interests in mind no matter what group or hat I may be wearing."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Well shinch technically she doon it firsht, maybe it should be reffered to ash Kayse'd."
Kayse reinforces, "Why do we need the Rooks?"
Kayse furrows her brow.
Kayse frustratedly divulges, "Information I was collecting has now been compromised. Information that could stop the slaughtering of our citizens, allies and defenders by the Wraith."
Kayse eyes Thadston with a stern expression, her dark sclera reduced to mere slits.
Juramis huskily asks, "Thadston is putting himself in the spotlight as well, is he not?"
Kayse reticently says, "But because my methods were not the path of a 'righteous' individual, I can say that those who compromised my efforts now have the blood of Wehnimer's citizens on their hands for they picked what they thought was right. Or perhaps even chose what they thought was more of a priority...and that was not Wehnimer's Landing."
Tikba mildly asks, "Is it not curious that the primary punishment Thadston seeks is the banning of his political adversaries from elected office?"
Leafiara repeats, "...compromised?"
Kayse shakes her head, totally at a loss.
Kayse evenly says, "I say this because I believe my actions and decisions--whether you think they are black, white, or gray are up to you-- but the goal, outcome and intentions were the same; to benefit Wehnimer's Landing and its people."
Kayse passionately emphasizes, "Always for Wehnimer's."
Kayse inclines her head.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "He not even git in a word, me think him brain broked."
Kayse says, "That is my statement, your honor."
Lylia says, "It is her statement; she is permitted to deliver it in full, as are each of the individuals charged."
Kayse glances between Thadston and Jeshiah.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Oh!"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me not knowed how it work, am not law type."
Kialeigh says, "Here it comes."
Thadston's Questions
Thadston shakes his head.
Juramis takes a moment to observe Pukk.
Tikba mildly says, "It is unfortunate that Pukk did not know this either, I suppose, when Thadston began to interrupt."
Lylia says, "Well, it may also have broken some things in some heads. So you are not wrong."
Thadston says, "How did your ego fit through the arch, I wonder."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse asks, "Are we going to discuss the information I gave you as well?"
Speaking huskily to Pukk, Juramis says, "You did just fine. I'm sure you'll be fine."
Pukk says, "I'm not going back for office. I'm crazy not stupid."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Thadston says, "You seem to think you'v.."
Thadston glances at Kayse.
Gutstorm yells, "Hey no need fer dat!"
Lylia murmurs, "Oh, well done."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "She got a nice head."
Juramis glances at Gutstorm.
Kayse says, "I mean that wasn't a Rook matter... but."
Kayse waves her hand in a dismissive gesture.
Thadston says, "You seem to think you've done a lot...carried the burden of the town alone. Saved us from Bodohal, from Gnul, from whatever else you imagine."
Thadston asks, "Do you not have fellow town councilors? Fellow heroes who fend off the monsters? The Marshal?"
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse corrects, "I did not do it alone."
Irval says, "Pretty sure the rooks took a shot at Bodohal every chance they had while he was in port."
Thadston asks, "Can none of what you mentioned be accomplished without the Rooks?"
Tikba mildly says, "And yet you have never thanked them."
Irval says, "And only after several failed assasinations did he fire on the people of landing."
Speaking casually to Thadston, Kayse asks, "Do you have a lead on information about the Wraith?"
Kayse says, "Because I do."
Speaking to Irval, Chandrellia says, "Its interesting how much you know abut us, without knowing about us."
Leafiara says, "...we."
Leafiara chuckles. [she was implying that she expected Thadston to go hard after that since he'd just moments ago claimed
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "Perhaps it all could be accomplished without the Rooks..."
Thadston asks, "And what part of our town's soul did it cost to get it?"
Thadston asks, "What favor did you promise or deliver?"
Juramis put a mithril-banded dark ironwood walking stick capped with a carved eagle head in his gold brocade mantle.
Thadston asks, "And to whom?"
Irval says, "I mean its hindsight, The guy was a kidnapper and whatever else. But those deaths, those fishermen, are dead as the result."
Tikba says, "They are a result of Bodohal's coming."
Speaking huskily to Gutstorm, Juramis asks, "Still have any of those bitters?"
Speaking to Irval, Chandrellia asks, "Yes, and its oly our fault right?"
Tikba says, "And he must pay for them."
Gutstorm offers Juramis a tankard of Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "If we want to keep our town protected I do not think it's best to reveal it right now."
Juramis accepts Gutstorm's Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "You can tie a noose around my neck for that if you wish."
Juramis nods.
Tikba mildly says, "Perhaps the misfortune is that the Rooks missed twice."
Thadston says, "But you have indicated it's already in jeopardy."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Thadston says, "It's already known."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I am having faith it is not."
Thadston says, "You might be wrong."
Irval says, "Yes he came, but he wouldn't of fired on the citizens of landing if he wasnt attacked everytime he stepped foot of his boat. Perhaps there could of been a better way. But we will never know."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Wunner if he need rope."
Speaking drunkenly to Kialeigh, Gutstorm slurs, "She in league wit Amos."
Thadston asks, "Have you ever tried to accomplish the town's goals without the Rooks?"
Speaking evenly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Then I will be wrong. Announcing that information will not help either outcome."
Speaking to Irval, Kelfyr says, "I'm surprised how well you empathize with a mass murdering pirate. Big of you."
Kialeigh says, "She's just passionate."
Thadston says, "It might help your defense."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I have, but my methods and how I accomplish things do not fit in the spectrum of other organizations."
Speaking wryly to Kelfyr, Tikba asks, "Who among us?"
Speaking drunkenly to Kialeigh, Gutstorm slurs, "Me bank account ish passionate too."
Thadston says, "Crimes. You say methods, but you mean crimes."
Speaking steadily to Thadston, Kayse asks, "Will it help Wehnimer's Landing?"
Thadston says, "Methods is a sneaky way of excusing bad behavior."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse asks, "What crimes?"
Thadston says, "Fine. You don't need to tell me who...or what...but answer this."
Irval says, "I like to play the demon's advocate. Helps to aquire perspective."
Kayse glances at Thadston.
Thadston says, "In order to get information for that may lead to the Wraith..."
Tikba mildly agrees, "I, as well."
Thadston asks, "Did you broker a deal?"
Kayse responds, "I did, indeed."
Lylia dryly remarks, "Oh no, not a deal. From a politician."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish how me she it, Pukk did it innocently, wit no ill will, cuz he Pukk, some deez uttersh knew wot dey doin wud wrong."
Speaking amusedly to Gutstorm, Kialeigh says, "My bank account is passionate too."
Pukk asks, "I did what innocently?"
Udari says, "Thats how you normally aquire information... using deals."
Speaking drunkenly to Pukk, Gutstorm slurs, "Exactly."
Thadston asks, "And can you say with the utmost certainty that whatever deal you brokered will not in any way, shape or form come back to inflict damage or harm on Wehnimer's Landing or her people?"
Kayse folds her hands behind her back.
Udari says, "Or violence."
Pukk says, "I defended myself. That is all I did."
Leafiara mutters, "Never seen a deal yet that anyone could make *that* guarantee of."
Speaking measuredly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Even if I was trading kittens, I couldn't guarantee that. We have new threats everyday."
Speaking huskily to Pukk, Juramis says, "I believe you."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Lylia says, "No one has. Such a perfect exchange does not exist."
Kiyna says, "Thadston has a great track record with deals. Nothing ever goes wrong, he's your man."
Thadston says, "Sneaky sneaky."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "I mean the Tyrrax one is already coming back to bite folks."
Thadston says, "So the answer is no."
Perigourd says, "In which case it's pointless to make such deals as you're simply trading lives."
Elexya says, "I bet some chairs and windows would disagere."
Tikba says, "Every choice we make is such a deal."
Thadston says, "In which official capacity did you broker this deal? As a Councilor? As a Firefly? As a Rook? Sweet Kai, how many hats."
Speaking reticently to Thadston, Kayse says, "I will take full responsibility if it comes back to harm us."
Speaking to Perigourd, Kiyna asks, "We've made deals with Elidal. Should we not have?"
Thadston says, "Well, according to Pukk, a few silvers paid will wash the debt."
Thadston nods at Kayse.
Lylia says, "Most of us are not given the opportunity to see every road as if we were perched on high, able to see futures laid out before us."
Kayse peers quizzically at Thadston.
Juramis leans back.
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Lylia, Kelfyr asks, "Most?"
Tikba says, "Each step leads along a path, though we might pretend otherwise."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me got great slogan for Alendrial mayor run...it goed like, "me a Rook, not a crook"."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I'm confused how taking responsibility for my actions warrants that statement."
Speaking to Kelfyr, Lylia says, "I always leave room for near-impossibilities."
Speaking to Lylia, Kelfyr says, "Ah, I was thinking maybe you knew someone."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "You can pick a title I wore for the transaction. I suppose Rook or firefly can be your options."
Vaemyr says, "The problem is, the deal was not made in any official capacity, I think is generally what Thadston is getting at. It's that noone knows what was promised, or how it might harm folks I think..."
Thadston says, "Meaning that claiming to take responsbiliy is sometimes a cheap way of excusing bad behavior."
Thadston says, "No, I don't want to suppose."
Tikba says, "If the deal was not made in any official capacity, then surely it is no business of the Mayor."
Thadston asks, "I want to know. Which authority did you have to make that deal?"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Amos'....."
Thadston says, "The answer is simple. None of your hats give you that power."
Udari says, "Good question."
Kayse looks thoughtfully at Thadston.
Alosaka asks, "What authority did he have to summarily hang seven people?"
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse challenges, "Which title gave you authority to hang seven people without a trial?"
Alosaka says, "We all seem to be adopting new powers here."
Kialeigh says, "He's not on trial yet.."
Thadston says, "I was scoffed at by the public for potentially delaying an election with a timeline...but there's fools running around making laws, doing whatever they want, brokering deals in shadows, all day long."
Thadston says, "...but I'm the monster."
Thadston says, "Mayor."
Speaking amusedly to Alosaka, Tikba says, "Perhaps you missed your calling."
Kialeigh says, "Better to use that breath to save themselves."
Thadston says, "It's called Mayor."
Speaking to Tikba, Alosaka says, "I have prosecuted someone, but never defended."
Speaking surprisedly to Thadston, Kayse asks, "A Mayor can bend the laws to their whim?"
Udari says, "He sort of dropped the tree branch on the crowd with that decision."
Thadston says, "But nice attempt at deflection."
Kiyna asks, "Mayors can just kill whoever they like. So says Thadston. What do you know?"
Kayse comments, "Fascinating."
Speaking quietly to Xorus, Lylia breathes, "Let them try."
Thadston asks, "What was the intention of the map and the Den meeting?"
Thadston asks, "What was being discussed?"
Jeshiah squirms.
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "Disrupting supply lines, I imagine. Nothing in depth had been discussed."
Thadston asks, "How does one disrupt supply lines, when it comes to the Rooks?"
Irval says, "Murder and mayhem."
Speaking to Irval, Kiyna says, "Wrong."
Kialeigh says, "Sounds like a great drink."
Kayse repeats, "Hard to tell when nothing had really been discussed. The meeting was suddenly interrupted...."
Kayse casually glances at Thadston.
Thadston asks, "Okay. If you had to guess, how would you disrupt a supply line?"
Thadston peers quizzically at Kayse.
Thadston says, "As a Rook. Not a Firefly or Councilor. But maybe it's all the same."
Kayse smirks.
Udari asks, "How did thadston know about the map and the secret meeting?"
Kayse flatly says, "It is not."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Samfelt."
Evia says, "Since having done this that and every other sort of thing."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I assume raiding caravans and taking their supplies would be disrupting it."
Speaking to Udari, Kiyna says, "Samfelt told him. He betrayed us. Or at least, betrayed Casiphia."
Kayse adds, "So the settlers wouldn't have those items anymore for survival."
Speaking drunkenly to Kiyna, Gutstorm slurs, "Ye think Kayse told Amos?"
Udari says, "That man deserves to die."
Kayse lightly says, "I am guessing since it was never discussed."
Thadston asks, "Is it possible some imperials would have died?"
Udari says, "Perhaps oneday."
Speaking to Tayler, Elexya whispers aloud, "I wouldn't answer anything that asked me to speculate."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I was strongly against that from happening, as I said in my statement."
Speaking to Udari, Chandrellia says, "A fellow by the name of Samfelt, who lied about his name, told the Baron to be and then told Thadston, even tho we protected him and gave him shelter whle he waited out Bodohal."
Thadston says, "Oo, against it."
Kayse glances at Thadston and slowly exhales.
Thadston says, "How noble."
Kayse asks, "You were listening, right?"
Thadston asks, "Would you have stopped your fellow Rooks?"
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I would have stopped it, Mayor Andrews."
Juramis huskily says, "From what I have heard so far, they had just learned about the convoy when Thadston was able to find them. There was no decision to attack it."
Kayse nods once at Thadston.
Lylia says, "It is possible that throwing a chair out a window could knock the head off an adorable orphaned waif, but we cannot always predict our actions precisely."
Thadston asks, "How?"
Speaking to Elexya, Tayler says, "There was a good bit of leading from the barrister as well, earlier."
Irval says, "Murder and mayhem."
Kayse says, "Usually when you are infiltrating an organization you pass along information to others."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Udari says, "Im sure his name and honor are both tarnish beyond cleaning. As it should be."
Speaking to Lylia, Tikba says, "Nevertheless, a considerate person would refrain."
Thadston asks, "To Amos?"
Kayse crisply says, "You very well know the Marshal and Sir Guarrin knew about my position."
Thadston laughs!
Speaking to Udari, Chandrellia says, "Oh no, the Baron to be made him an Envoy."
Kayse repeats, "You very well know the Marshal and Sir Guarrin knew about my position."
Thadston says, "Oh I know a lot. Tonight isn't just for me."
Thadston says, "I have a letter from Guarrin about you."
Udari slowly says, "Really..."
Speaking drunkenly to Stormyrain, Gutstorm slurs, "Yoo knowed Kayse wudda quintuple agent?"
Thadston says, "But again..."
Thadston points at a narrow stairway.
Speaking simply to Gutstorm, Stormyrain says, "Yes."
Thadston asks, "So who do you serve?"
Thadston peers quizzically at Kayse.
Stormyrain says, "For quite a bit of time."
Thadston asks, "The town as councilor? Amos as a firefly? Mother as a Rook?"
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse answers, "Wehimer's Landing."
Thadston says, "How do you even decide what you'll do or be each morning."
Evia says, "Knew that was coming."
Thadston says, "Ah, of course."
Thadston rolls his eyes.
Pukk says, "We were Samfelted before we even know the verb Samfelted."
Tikba murmurs, "How do any of us?"
Kayse observes, "Many outside public service have other roles."
Thadston asks, "Were you a Rook before you became a Councilor?"
Kayse says, "Why are mine in question."
Kayse says, "You also forgot about Negotiator of the Black Hand."
Thadston says, "Because you're on trial."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I was, yes."
Thadston asks, "Was Kiyna?"
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Kiyna, yooda quintuple agent too?"
Speaking frankly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Perhaps that is for her to answer. I do not have a record for enrollments."
Kiyna smirks at Gutstorm.
Thadston asks, "So you did not conspire with Kiyna and Leafiara and Chandrellia and Pukk to ensure that as outgoing councilor Rooks left office, new Rooks came in?"
Thadston peers quizzically at Kayse.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dat not a denial...."
Speaking earnestly to Thadston, Kayse says, "No, we did not."
Tikba gazes with a bemused expression at her surroundings.
Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk asks, "How would we do that?"
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kiyna says, "No, I'm not."
Speaking to Thadston, Kayse says, "I ran because I wanted to make a difference and developed a platform where I thought the town needed improvements."
Thadston asks, "There was never any communication among your ranks to the plan and running for office as secret Rooks?"
Juramis rubs his chin thoughtfully.
Tikba wryly says, "I wish that we had conspired."
Kayse says, "You have a stack of proposals on your desk from me."
Tikba says, "The campaign was a great deal of work."
Thadston says, "Anyone can sling a quill."
Speaking firmly to Thadston, Kayse says, "It was never discussed, no."
Speaking hushedly to herself, Elexya murmurs, "What's wrong with trying to get people who you are aligned with elected?"
Thadston says, "I see."
Speaking to Leafiara, Kiyna says, "Didn't you vote for Pookia? I feel Samfelted."
Speaking to Kiyna, Leafiara answers, "Yes."
Juramis huskily asks, "He is accusing them of conspiring to keep Rooks in office?"
Lylia says, "Oh, now that is low. Not anyone can sling a quill. Some people cannot even sign their own names."
Speaking coolly to Thadston, Kayse says, "Perhaps your charges of conspiracy aren't as strong as you think."
Speaking drunkenly to Tikba, Gutstorm slurs, "Wut bout yoo, me know yoo look upta Kayse, she gitcha in on her scheme?"
Speaking amusedly to Gutstorm, Tikba asks, "Which scheme?"
Tikba mildly says, "Thadston seems not to believe that the people of the Landing might simply prefer to elect Rooks."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Alll of em!"
Thadston says, "Do you think it's fair for anyone to broker a deal with someone in secret, with potential harm to others, so long as the original party believes they are doing it for the good of Wehnimer's Landing?"
Speaking to Gutstorm, Tikba says, "Certainly not all of them."
Perigourd asks, "Those same people elected him, no?"
Juramis shrugs at Tikba.
Speaking to Lylia, Evia says, "They just use them as darts and stabbities, silly wabbit."
Juramis huskily says, "Whatever keeps the peace."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Speaking to Perigourd, Kiyna says, "Perhaps the Landing takes all kinds."
Speaking to Tikba, Leafiara acknowledges, "The people already thought Pukk and I were Rooks when they voted us in and we weren't even yet."
Speaking to Kiyna, Perigourd says, "It certainly has them."
Speaking to Pukk, Leafiara recalls, "Actually, wait, maybe you were by then. I forget the exact timeline."
Speaking reticently to Thadston, Kayse says, "That is why everyone has different morals, opinions and ethics. I think it can be fair, yes."
Pukk says, "But I only got into office because a spot opened up."
Speaking to a huge orange cat, Lylia croons, "What a grand big boy you are."
Pukk says, "And I regretted getting into office."
Thadston says, "I see."
Speaking to Pukk, Leafiara says, "That's not true. Getting votes over Sairai is no easy feat."
Speaking clearly to Gutstorm, Tikba says, "I am not a Rook."
Thadston says, "I think I'm done."
Lylia says, "I did not know that about you, Pukk."
Thadston nods at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah nods.
Pukk says, "I found out first hand it was impossible to make everybody happy."
Lylia simply says, "Yes."
Character Witness, Marshal Stormyrain
Jeshiah asks, "Kayse! Before I begin my questions, did you have anyone who wishes to speak on your behalf?"
Speaking drunkenly to Tikba, Gutstorm slurs, "We kin be friendsh den."
Kayse nods at Jeshiah.
Pukk says, "That was the biggest let down I have had."
Leafiara asks, "...this is going to run longer than two nights, isn't it?"
Kayse simply says, "I do. The Marshal, Stormyrain and Lady Lylia Rashere."
Kayse asks, "Mayor Thadston mentioned a letter?"
Kayse glances appraisingly at Thadston.
Gutstorm offers Lylia a coil of thick rope.
Lylia gazes in amusement at Gutstorm.
Thadston says, "Yep. Sent to me."
Lylia declines Gutstorm's offer.
Speaking drunkenly to Lylia, Gutstorm slurs, "Gib dish to Thadston?"
Kayse asks, "And?"
Thadston says, "I read it."
Thadston says, "You won't."
Lylia says, "I am sure he has brought his own."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Thadston says, "Stormyrain, come on down."
Pukk says, "I did not call anybody to speak for my character. I speak for myself and that is fine."
Kayse smirks.
Stormyrain just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Stormyrain inclines her head.
Stormyrain places a hand over her heart.
Stormyrain bows to Thadston.
Kayse smiles at Stormyrain.
Stormyrain bows to Judge Manard.
Juramis glances at the viewing area and grins.
Stormyrain folds her hands behind her back.
Kayse takes a few steps back.
Udari says, "Best of luck, Marshal."
Juramis huskily says, "I'm either getting tipsy, or this is getting more interesting by the second."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Both."
Stormyrain asks, "Should I simply make my statement?"
Speaking simply to Juramis, Leafiara says, "Landing trials."
Stormyrain glances between Thadston and Judge Manard.
Kialeigh says, "We all need popcorn to throw at the witnesses."
Kialeigh says, "With as much alcohol as is flowing."
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
The Judge nods.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish clearly prove wimun shmarter den men, no fensh to da fellersh here, but none ush can shceme dish goot."
Juramis huskily asks, "Why corn?"
Speaking to Kialeigh, Chandrellia says, "I would not throw such things at the Marshal."
Stormyrain nods.
Irval says, "They are weavers for sure."
Juramis huskily says, "Turnips seem like a better option, if you are throwing anything."
Kayse gazes respectfully at Stormyrain.
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Thadston turns an inquisitive ear toward Stormyrain.
Kialeigh asks, "You wanna sleep on the armchair tonight?"
Irval asks, "No?"
The orange cat carefully sniffs at a flagon of Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis glances at a huge orange cat.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Do it recline?"
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kialeigh says, "Not reliably..."
Stormyrain says, "I have known Kayse for many years. Long before this started. I have always known her to have the best interests of the Landing in mind, whether she was conducting business or leading. I trust her, and that is something that is something I do not say lightly."
Stormyrain offers, "When she came to me to tell me what she was doing, I agreed to hold her secret in exchange for information she felt may help aid in the Landing. And she kept her word."
Stormyrain says, "It is not unusual in our town, for that to be necessary. I have had to walk in the grey many times in the past. For Puptilian, to give him plausible deniability. With you, Mayor, when you were the Marshal. You yourself conducted such secret operations to garner the advantage against our sworn enemies."
Stormyrain glances around, looking a bit less confident.
Kayse surreptitiously glances at Thadston.
Thadston squints.
Jeshiah nods at Stormyrain.
Jeshiah nods at Stormyrain.
Kayse whispers aloud, "Interesting."
Irval says, "Bad time for bravery to fall."
Irval says, "Or perfect..."
Jeshiah scribbles something down.
Stormyrain offers, "I have worked with Rooks in the past to do the same. With Rysus; Thrayzar, Lady Lylia, myself and others--we worked together to bring about the downfall of Drangell."
Stormyrain glances up.
Kialeigh says, "There is no coincidence.."
Stormyrain says, "And it was greatly successful."
Evia says, "Chestnut might need some warm milk by now."
Stormyrain simply says, "The Rooks are many things. But first they are citizens who love this town."
Juramis smirks at Evia.
Juramis takes a drink from his Jock's bitter.
Stormyrain says, "I have spoken in the past of a secret operations brigade within the Landing. I utilized this opportunity to see if it would be fruitful. Kayse provided that opportunity and I am hopeful that we may continue to find success from the information she has shared."
Stormyrain simply says, "I am grateful for her trust in me. And for her putting herself at risk to share information I would not have had otherwise."
Stormyrain says, "That is all."
Stormyrain folds her hands behind her back.
Kayse nods appreciatively at Stormyrain.
Thadston asks, "So you've sanctioned Kayse's operations she's been a part of?"
Chandrellia says, "Stormy isnt on trial."
Leafiara wonders, "Coming up next, the trial of Marshal Stormyrain?"
Stormyrain looks lost in thought.
Speaking to Chandrellia, Vaemyr says, "Yet."
Lylia says, "Oh, I hope he has a question or two."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Stormy issa Marshal, her job let her do dat no?"
Udari says, "Use all the tools in your kit to get the job done."
Juramis agrees with Leafiara.
Kiyna says, "Should put the whole town on trial for disagreeing with him."
Stormyrain says, "I don't know that sanctioned is the right word. Benefitted from, is better."
Speaking to Chandrellia, Vaemyr says, "Thadston can try anyone for anyone it seems."
Thadston says, "Oh, so you'll take but not give."
Thadston nods.
Stormyrain asks, "Am I on trial?"
Stormyrain smiles.
Vaemyr says, "Anyone for anything that is."
Chandrellia yells, "Stormy isnt on trial, lets keep this going, Mayor!"
Thadston says, "Are you aware of who she brokered a deal with, and the details of it, to gain supposed information of the Wraith which has not to my knowledge been made known yet?"
Thadston says, "It's just simple questions..."
Kayse glances skeptically at Thadston.
The Judge nods, "I'll allow."
The Judge says, "But she is not compelled to answer."
Speaking to Thadston, Stormyrain says, "They are simple questions, but if you are going to question whether or not I give to the Landing, well. That will take time I'm afraid we do not have."
Irval says, "If she's a character witness, i'd sooner try to speak to that and that only."
Thadston says, "Are you aware of the Rooks brokered deal."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "She a characther alright."
Stormyrain says, "I am aware one was made."
Thadston asks, "But not the details of it?"
Stormyrain says, "I am aware one was made."
Stormyrain folds her hands behind her back.
Kialeigh says, "Not at liberty to say..."
Juramis huskily says, "Not sure what that means in this situation. The laws here are what they are."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Leafi, kin ye put yer shprite inna bug jar fer me to borrow ferra day or two?>"
Thadston says, "Sneaky answer. Very well. Final question."
Juramis shrugs at Irval.
Thadston says, "You said you trust Kayse."
Stormyrain says, "I did."
Thadston asks, "Of the others charged...Kiyna, Drektor, Leafiara, Chandrellia, Pukk. Do you trust them?"
Irval says, "That they are."
Kayse inclines her head.
Leafiara says, "I give this a half and half."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me bet she trusht ye all, even Pukk."
Lylia says, "Very much a 'yes and no' question, I agree."
Jeshiah exclaims, "I believe it's Lylia's statement time now!"
Jeshiah squirms.
Stormyrain slowly says, "Many of those I do not know well enough to answer."
Kayse gazes in amusement at Jeshiah.
Thadston says, "I think you just did."
Thadston nods.
Kialeigh says, "Ouch.."
Thadston says, "Thanks Marshal."
Stormyrain gives a sidelong glance at Thadston.
Character Witness, Lylia
Jeshiah asks, "Lylia?"
Imperatrix Lylia just climbed down a narrow stairway.
Jeshiah asks, "Please?"
Stormyrain nods.
Pukk says, "That was a fair and honest answer."
Stormyrain just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Lylia inclines her head.
Kayse smiles at Lylia.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Ahh, me Lylia."
Udari says, "She sais 'Did' and not 'Do'."
Speaking to Stormyrain, Chandrellia says, "Thank you."
Speaking to Jeshiah, Lylia says, "It is good to see you again; it has been some time."
Lylia smiles.
Kayse idly flicks her oval niveous-veined sparkling champagne wings for a few moments and sleekly rests them against her back.
Lylia bows to Thadston.
Lylia nods respectfully to Judge Manard.
Jeshiah bows.
Speaking drunkenly to Stormyrain, Gutstorm slurs, "Need to werk on how to lie better."
Speaking to Udari, Stormyrain says, "I do trust her, to be clear."
Thadston turns an inquisitive ear toward Lylia.
Kayse nods appreciatively at Lylia.
Lylia says, "I could make a statement waxing rhapsodic about the deeds of Kayse Thaellian. I have one memorized, in fact, and she is an easy woman to praise."
Speaking to Gutstorm, Stormyrain says, "I had no need to lie."
Leafiara says, "For what it's worth, if you ever want to ask me anything, feel free and I'll answer honestly."
Leafiara nods at Stormyrain.
Stormyrain nods understandingly at Leafiara.
Speaking to Thadston, Lylia says, "Shall I sing another verse, then? I can, but I shall also go a step farther in light of the revelations this evening."
Lylia asks, "I trust her enough that I would work with her as I have worked with you in the past to accomplish necessary goals. One does what one must, Mayor. Who understands this better than the Faendryl?"
(Lylia turns to the balcony.)
Speaking drunkenly to Leafiara, Gutstorm slurs, "Me am da besht nookin Dwarf yoo knowed?"
Lylia says, "But I should sing a bit, yes."
Lylia smiles.
Kayse grins impishly.
Speaking to Gutstorm, Leafiara replies, "Close between you and Dwi."
Lylia says, "Many of us in this town lay down our lives; far fewer stake their carefully manicured reputations, yet she has done this and more. Impugned as a Rook, and now no doubt reviled as a turncoat, hanged before her trial even completed, Kayse is unwaveringly true to one aim: the well-being of Wehnimer's Landing."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dwi ish kinda cute in her own way."
Lylia simply asserts, "While many die for it, she lives for it."
Lylia says, "At the risk of sounding arrogant, I know better than most the monumental effort it takes to accomplish change at all, let alone bloodlessly..." she trails off with a glance at her own hands. "Or as nearly so as possible."
Lylia smirks as a haughty expression flits across her face.
Kayse nods thoughtfully at Lylia.
Lylia turns to face Thadston.
Lylia snaps, "Yet that is what she has done so far, presuming her efforts are not wasted by a petty prosecution of charges that are risible at best and offensive at worst."
Lylia sardonically bites out, "Honestly, hooliganism?"
Thadston smirks.
Lylia gives a sigh of exasperation.
Udari says, "Thats something Svardin would say."
Lylia says, "The town fairly bristles with swords and is alight with spells, but information is a rare weapon, one that only some can wield with finesse."
Kayse glances between Thadston and Lylia.
Lylia says, "I have witnessed her do this for years. Have I known of all Kayse does? No; she would be very poor at her work if others knew much about it."
Lylia firmly says, "But I know the important element: She has put that information to work for the town, unfailingly and with clear-eyed knowledge, at every step."
Lylia nods once.
Lylia says, "Nothing further, unless you wish something further from me."
Lylia inclines her head.
Thadston says, "Interesting perspective."
Thadston says, "I will pose to you a similar question as I asked before."
Thadston says, "Given your history and burden as Mayor..."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me hope Helga's ish open, am gittin hungry."
Lylia nods understandingly at Thadston.
Speaking to Gutstorm, Kialeigh says, "Careful... that stew is where the missing children we return go."
Thadston asks, "How would you have likely reacted and responded to learning citizens of the town took it upon themselves to work in secret, without your knowledge, and even broker mysterious deals that could potentially harm the town, without your knowledge and permission?"
Thadston peers quizzically at Lylia.
Thadston asks, "How would Mayor Lylia approve of such? Would she?"
Juramis looks at Kialeigh with concern.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dat goot question."
Juramis picks up a flagon of Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Lylia bluntly says, "I already did find that out, when Mother stalked into my office and told me how to govern as though she were the elected official instead of an autocrat running a demi-criminal organization."
Speaking to Juramis, Irval says, "She's only half teasing, who knows what horrors lurk in the bottom of helga's stew."
Thadston asks, "...and how did you respond?"
Kialeigh says, "We know... cause we've help MAKE the stew."
Juramis huskily says, "I stay at Frith's."
Juramis nods once.
Lylia acidly remarks, "Ungraciously. I despised the woman at the time."
Lylia chuckles.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "All shtew ish ish shoop dat ye shtick yer thumb in."
Thadston says, "But beyond your dislike, she sought to undermine you in a sense, no?"
Tikba dubiously says, "You should not stick your thumb into stew OR soup."
Kayse chuckles.
Irval says, "Frith's is nice."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks rather relaxed.
Kialeigh says, "Not if you wanna keep yer thumb."
Lylia simply says, "Yes."
Kialeigh says, "Or have a healer standing by."
Thadston asks, "How would Faendryl deal with such treason?"
Lylia says, "But that was then, this is now, and had she shared information with me instead of dictating to me, we would have seen some accord."
Jeshiah breaks out in a sweat.
Kayse gives a sidelong glance at Jeshiah.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "How would dey, Xorus?"
Thrassus says, "With finality."
Lylia wryly says, "We do not have the time for me to go into Faendryl governance and the concept of managed dissent, I believe."
Tikba amusedly says, "Not with elections."
(Lylia glances up at the balcony.)
(Xorus traces a finger across his neck.)
Thadston asks, "Maybe a quick word to squeeze it in?"
Speaking to Jeshiah, Kayse says, "Seems the Mayor keeps forgetting who is on trial this evening."
Thadston asks, "Torture?"
Thadston asks, "Death?"
Lylia chuckles.
Thadston asks, "Is that safe to assume?"
Lylia says, "None of the above. Managed dissent is...more nuanced. Infiltration. Control without the seeming of control."
Thadston says, "Certainly it wouldn't be allowing a gathering of witnesses to sing praise."
Thadston shrugs.
Lylia says, "Double agency. No organization is without its secret loyalists."
Lylia smiles.
Jeshiah says, "Your Honor, Lylia is not on trial..."
The Judge says, "Lylia, you are free to return."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Thadston shrugs.
Speaking gently to Jeshiah, Lylia says, "I did offer to answer questions."
Tikba mildly says, "The Mayor has great admiration for those cities which do not hold elections."
Lylia inclines her head.
Lylia says, "Thank you."
Imperatrix Lylia just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Closing Words
Kayse announces, "I would like the court to know that Sir Guarrin agreed to be a character witness for me. He is in Hendor--but the letter Mayor Andrews is referring to is his statement."
Kayse notes, "For the record."
Thadston says, "Honorable. Sinking in quicksand and then grabbing three other people to pull down with you."
Thadston nods.
Lylia says, "He left a great many questions unasked."
Jeshiah says, "In the defense of Kayse..."
Lylia says, "And shame on him for not knowing that witches float."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Jeshiah says, "Well, I will be honest."
Jeshiah says, "She defended herself a lot better than I could, or that other guy."
Jeshiah laughs!
Kayse gazes in amusement at Jeshiah.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dont everyone float doh?"
Jeshiah asks, "Why do we have Rooks?"
Speaking steadily to Thadston, Kayse says, "I was told to provided character witnesses. I did so."
Leafiara says, "I'm sure he'll take a consistent stance when I call no witnesses."
Jeshiah says, "It's become obvious more and more this night."
Lylia says, "Condemned for witnesses, condemned for calling none."
Juramis huskily asks, "That other guy?"
Kayse nods briefly at Jeshiah.
Speaking to Juramis, Vaemyr says, "Pukk."
Juramis winces.
Juramis nods understandingly at Vaemyr.
Jeshiah says, "When failure and emotions roll down from the top, we are left at times defenseless, and unable to rely on the stability of our Mayor to truly protect us."
Juramis chuckles.
Juramis indicates a flagon of Dragonsdraught ale as a possible option.
Lylia says, "He is an excellent prosecutor. I admire the mayor more now than I had before, and that is saying something."
Juramis nods at Pukk.
Speaking to Pukk, Vaemyr says, "It's ok, you spoke from the heart."
Kayse gives a sidelong glance at an elaborately carved chair.
Jeshiah says, "We all want to live in peace, have freedoms, and defend this town. I guess in a sense, we're all Rooks."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks quite relaxed.
Speaking to Lylia, Kiyna says, "I'm not looking forward to being in his sights."
Lylia says, "I could not speak from the heart, having none."
Kayse traces the lines of her smoke-hued feathers.
Udari says, "Ill drink to that."
Juramis huskily says, "Everyone deserves a last ale."
Jeshiah says, "However, the night is not young. No she is not. I have no further words in Kayse's defense."
Juramis huskily says, "Or glass a wine, if you prefer wine."
Lylia coldly says, "We are not 'all Rooks.'."
Irval says, "Not even close."
Jeshiah says, "But I would motion your Honor to continue the trial tomorrow evening, and likely after that as needed."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Dish mashk make me nook like an apoffacanary."
Speaking to Lylia, Vaemyr says, "It's it bad I want to debate him for fun? I mean if it wasn't a trial and all."
Thadston says, "I was to call Councilor Kiyna next, I have some questions for her."
Juramis huskily says, "I think he said you are. But that is just the words of some nut that fell out of a tree, based on what I've been told."
Kialeigh says, "Not as young as Acorn anyway..."
The Judge pauses and ponders.
Kayse folds her wings across her back.
Leafiara says, "I'm surprised he went for the current councilors so early."
The Judge says, "It is late. We will adjourn for now, and begin the trial again tomorrow evening."
Jeshiah nods.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Gotta convict dem while dey shtill in offish."
Jeshiah exclaims, "Perfect!"
Kayse glances at Jeshiah.
Jeshiah scribbles down some more notes then runs off!
Kialeigh says, "At least he's not having you all imprisoned til after the trial.."
Juramis nods approvingly.
Kayse glances at a modwir arch.
Kialeigh says, "That would be dreadful."
Kayse stares upward.
Perigourd says, "Hmm.."
Thadston glances at Judge Manard.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Yeah, me here Shtormy dont feed prittnersh in da barracksh."
Kayse wryly says, "So much for closing statements."
Kayse glances appraisingly at a narrow stairway.
Thadston says, "Go ahead."
Thadston nods at Kayse.
Thadston turns an inquisitive ear toward Kayse.
Udari says, "That young man is probably throwing up right now. Hes got to work on his gambling face and stance."
Kialeigh says, "When you gotta use the outhouse...."
Irval says, "My rook call..."
Kayse dryly says, "I want to make sure my ego can fit through the arch to leave. I believe I have said enough in my defense as have the others."
Kayse winks at Thadston.
Town Councilor Kayse just climbed up a narrow stairway.
Thadston smirks.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Yoo gotta nice ego Kayse."
Speaking to Kayse, Kiyna says, "Well done."
Thadston says, "Tomorrow it continues then."
Mayor Thadston just marched stiffly through a modwir arch.
Discussion Afterward
Speaking to Kayse, Vaemyr says, "I bow to the queen."
The Judge stretches and exits.
Kialeigh says, "Very firm and brawny..."
Speaking to Kayse, Vaemyr says, "Joking."
Juramis stands up.
Speaking to Kayse, Lylia says, "I think you set him back on his heels."
Juramis takes a drink from his Dragonsdraught ale.
Juramis looks quite relaxed.
Speaking to Vaemyr, Kayse says, "Did I get another title? Thadston will be furious."
Speaking to Kayse, Chandrellia says, "Well done."
Speaking to Kayse, Vaemyr exclaims, "You almost have caught up to me!"
Chandrellia says, "Thank you everyone that spoke for Kayse this night."
Speaking to Kayse, Pukk says, "Well done. If it matters. I would still nominate you rook of the month again if I had to do ti again."
Lylia says, "It was a pleasure."
Speaking appreciatively to Kiyna, Kayse says, "Thank you."
Kialeigh says, "Again.."
Juramis huskily says, "The hour is late, and my bed at Frith's is calling. A safe and pleasant evening to you all."
Juramis pets a huge orange cat, which nuzzles his hand softly.
Speaking to Juramis, Lylia says, "Rest well."
Kialeigh says, "Don't ferget yer kitty."
Lord Juramis just trudged down a narrow stairway.
Juramis wanders away.
Speaking to Kayse, Kiyna says, "I'm glad it was too late to continue."
Speaking gratefully to Uniana, Kayse says, "Thank you for traveling all this way."
Kelfyr says, "Until tomorrow."
Kialeigh says, "He better give that kitty some milk.."
Kialeigh says, "Kitties need fed."
Tayler says, "Mongo is really well fed."
Speaking to Kayse, Leafiara says, "For what it's worth, despite the Amos affiliation... end of the day, Samfelt got to us long before Amos did despite ample opportunity that it could have been the other way around, so I'm not that broken up about it."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Mongo fat."
Speaking to Kayse, Kiyna says, "As I was saying, I'm glad the hour was too late. Imagine having to follow Kayse Thaellian on stage."
Speaking to Leafiara, Kayse says, "It would not have been in the Samfelt'd way anyways."
Speaking drunkenly to Kayse, Gutstorm slurs, "We changeing da term Samfelting, to Kayse'd."
Speaking suspiciously to Kayse, Leafiara says, "Noted."
Leafiara chuckles.
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Raelee talked way to much tnite."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Jush drop me off outshide."
Speaking to Kayse, Kiyna says, "This seems like an appropriate time for a hug. This has been your hug warning."
Kiyna hugs Kayse, who wraps her in a warm embrace.
Kayse grumbles at Kiyna.
Speaking to Kiyna, Kayse asks, "Why?"
Speaking to Kayse, Kiyna says, "Eh, felt like it."
Leafiara says, "I have to admit, I shortened up the material I had prepared because I didn't want to be long-winded..."
Leafiara says, "Turns out Kayse would have had me beat anyway by far."
Lylia says, "Oh, I do. I enjoy it."
Gutstorm drunkenly slurs, "Me prolly not be here, make sure none dem rook escape dem fate."
Lylia says, "Captive audience, all that."
Leafiara sheepishly says, "I've been known for going a bit long in debates before."
Speaking to some gathered townspeople, Vaemyr says, "You all can get some rest too."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr says, "Hey... we... were pretty even."
Speaking to Xorus, Lylia says, "I am stealing you away."
Speaking amusedly to Vaemyr, Leafiara says, "My point."
Xorus says, "That would be hooliganism."
Speaking to Leafiara, Vaemyr exclaims, "I argue that's just the right amount of debate!"
Lylia says, "Then I shall enjoy my trial for it."
Leafiara ponders, "Maybe I'll lengthen back up now that I know I have time."
Tayler says, "I fear another speech like that will put me to sleep forever."
Leafiara says, "Don't worry, mine will be more exciting."
Leafiara says, "Less rhetoric, more emotional attachment."
Tayler says, "Kayse was quite quick, but once Thadston started questioning her witnesses and everything it was hard to keep the eyes open."
Kiyna says, "Mine won't be quite so... eloquent."
Kiyna says, "But I'll try."
Leafiara says, "I don't deal in eloquence. I deal in truth."
Tayler says, "I prefer a bit of truth to grandstanding."
Kiyna says, "I hope I will satisfy, then."
Leafiara says, "I mean, Kayse was truthful too."
Leafiara says, "But."
Leafiara says, "I know what you mean."
Tayler says, "Grandstanding probably isn't the right word, but I'm exhausted and still have to work off these brooch rubs before I can sleep or I'll feel terribly useless tomorrow."
Tayler says, "Ok... time to reduce the minotaur population a smidge."
