Fishing
Fishing is a popular pastime in Elanthia. By using certain fishing equipment - at minimum, a fishing rod with line and a lure attached - in a designated fishing area, anyone can catch fish of all sizes.
The original Legacy Fishing System utilized only items as part of the fishing experience, with what was described as a very complex back end system designed to mimic real world fishing that took into account time of day and the season with regard to when fish were more likely to bite. It relied heavily on the strength stat for fishing success as well as a great deal of luck.
The Artisan Fishing System was introduced in December, 2025, as a complete overhaul of the original fishing system. Instead of relying on luck and stats, it instead rewards use of the system by awarding ranks, similar to artisan skills. However, it is not a formal artisan skill and does not count against them when learning how to fish. The Artisan Fishing System uses the same equipment and fishing locations as the Legacy Fishing System.
Equipment
- Main article: Fishing equipment
The cost of fishing equipment varies depending on material, design, quality, and quantity. See the Fishing Shops category for inventory.
The fishing rod is used as the basis for fishing. A fishing rod needs, at minimum, some line attached as well as a lure of some type. Without a sinker, the line can be cast out at just the surface level. Adding a sinker will allow the line to be cast at middle depth or bottom depth, depending on the sinker weight. Attached lures and sinkers can be removed via GET.
While not shown in the analyze, a rod with a line attached can be CUT to remove an already-attached line. Removing a line by this method destroys the line on the rod but also allows for it to be replaced if it has been damaged via use.
All fishing rods are created equal. RAISE (far), [Verb:WAVE (medium distance), or PUSH (very close) the rod to cast at different lengths. PULL the rod to reel it in. Alternatively, just use the FISH command for it all.
A line is required to use a fishing rod. Lines come in the form of a string, line, or wire that is coiled up, and a portion can be cut off of the entire spool via PULL. Once removed from the spool, the cut line can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. Lines can come in different strengths, which can be identified via LOOK. Lines purchased at pay events such as Ebon Gate are generally the strongest available.
As line is used while attached to a fishing rod, its condition degrades. Weaker lines degrade faster than stronger lines. Using LOOK ROD will indicate the condition of the line. Line condition starts at "excellent condition" then goes to "decent condition", then "showing signs of wear", and finally "frayed and in danger of snapping soon" when it is nearing its end.
More expensive fishing lines last longer. When your line breaks, any lure and sinker that are attached to it are lost.
A lure is required to use a fishing rod. It can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. Lures may be general and work for all depths of fishing, or they may be set up to work best at a certain depth, such as on the surface. Using LOOK with a lure will identify what depths it works best at as well as the bonus it provides for each depth.
The three basic depths for lures are for fishing on the surface, at middle depth, or on the bottom.
A sinker is an optional item to use on a fishing rod. It can be added to a fishing rod via PUT. A sinker will cause the cast line to sink to a lower depth, either middle depth or to the bottom, depending on the sinker's weight. Using either LOOK or WEIGH with a sinker will identify how far it will cause a line's hook to sink in a body of water - either to the middle depth or to the bottom.
No sinker is needed for surface fishing.
- Additional Equipment
Special rhimar-lined creels and chests preserve caught fish. Without a creel or preserving chest, the fish can go bad or escape.
The Super-Fish-All Tackle Box is a multi-purpose container that serves as an "-inator" to store lures, weights, and lines, plus, at higher unlocks, serve as a rhimar-lined creel to weightlessly preserve caught live fish.
The Bugs 2 Lure Jig allows for the crafting of fishing lures from fishing line (of any quality) and gemstone bugs caught with a Bugs on Parade Bug Jar.
Fishing Shops
Fishing shops are located in a number of towns across Elanthia. In addition to these permanent town shops, both standard and specialty fishing gear is sometimes sold at festivals and pay events.

Artisan Fishing System
Artisan Fishing is a system released by GM Auchand in December 2025. The system introduces a new style of fishing and is currently an additional option as opposed to a replacement for the Legacy Fishing System. It is not part of the Artisan Skill system and will not count towards max Artisan Skill ranks. Additionally, artisan Fishing does not provide EXP. The Artisan Fishing System uses fishing skill levels as the basis for its skill check, with 100 being the maximum fishing skill level.
FISH Command
- Main article: Verb:FISHING
Most fishing related actions use the FISH verb. Some items, such as the fishing rod, emulate the FISH command with verb traps tied to manipulating the fishing rod itself.
The main actions include FISH CAST {distance} to cast the line and FISH REEL to try to reel it back in. Meanwhile, FISH SENSE can identify if your current location is a fishing spot.
In addition, FISH PERKS allows you to view and manage current fising perks while FISH STATUS lets you view your current fishing level as well as any active fishing perks.
Lastly, FISH TOTAL is a running tally of all of your catches (and misses). This includes all fish caught via the Legacy Fishing System as part of the total. The count of lines snapped is exclusive to the Artisan Fishing System.
The Basics
Artisan fishing currently uses the same equipment as the Legacy Fishing System. Use the FISH verb to begin. Catching fish, reeling, and filleting fish can increase your fishing skill level. Fish will appear with far more frequency compared to legacy fishing, but the reeling process may last much longer, sometimes ten minutes or more. Artisan fishing allows players to potentially catch fish in the 200-300lb range with frequency. If done correctly, line snaps should be rare.
At minimum, a fishing rod equipped with both line and a lure is needed to fish while in a fishing area. A sinker is an optional attachment that can allow you to fish at different depths other than just the water's surface.
LOOKing at lures before attaching them to a rod will indicate the numerical bonus for each depth, with +16 being the highest bonus. Once attached, you can LOOK ROD to see everything attached, including their benefits and bonuses. Lures and sinkers can be removed from a rod with GET. A fishing line can be removed from the rod with CUT, however this will destroy the line in the process.
You can determine whether or not you are in a fishing area via FISH SENSE. See the locations table for a list of known fishing areas.
Casting
To start, hold your fishing rod - with attached line and lure - in one hand and FISH CAST {distance} while in a fishing area.
When casting a line, you can select FISH CAST NEAR, MIDDLE, or FAR. This is a risk/reward system with the further distances being more difficult to reel but potentially more rewarding with larger or rarer fish. It is recommended to select NEAR until several fishing skill level ranks are earned.
Using a fishing rod's verb traps for PUSH (near), WAVE (middle), and RAISE (far) when manipulating the fishing rod emulate the use of FISH CAST {distance}. They can be used interchangeably with the FISH command.
Hooking a Fish
Once a line is cast, frequent rolls are made to attract and hook a fish. Using the correct type of lure at the correct depth will provide a bonus to a successful hook.
Reeling
Once a line has been cast out, it can be brought in via FISH REEL. (Using PULL ROD with a fishing rod emulates this command.) If no fish is on the line, it can be quickly reeled in. If a fish is hooked on the line, it will fight the reeling process.
When reeling fish, a roll is made to reel the fish closer (success = rolls 100 or higher), and the fish makes a roll to try and swim further away. The goal is to reduce the distance to zero before the line snaps. Reeling success factors contributing to roll success include:
- Fishing skill level
- Size of fish (with larger fish being more difficult to reel in)
- Some fishing perks when activated
- Distance from shore or dock: since the goal is to reduce the distance to zero, casting line to further distances will be more difficult.
Unlike legacy fishing, the strength stat is not a factor in reeling success.
Line Condition
Fishing line has both a quality and a condition. The quality of a line determines how quickly it degrades, with higher quality lines degrading at a slower rate than lower quality lines. The condition of the line is how much wear and tear it has endured and, ultimately, an indicator of when it might snap.
Condition is of the utmost importance while actively fishing. Fishing line condition degrades with use, and it is recommended to LOOK ROD before each cast. This will show you the current condition of your fishing line. Fishing line will degrade in the following stages: Excellent - Decent - Showing signs of use - Frayed and in danger of snapping soon. Once the line has degraded, use CUT MY ROD to remove the current line and then replace it with a new line. Note that cutting a rod with a lure and weight on the line will deposit these items into the alongside inventory slot.
Fishing lines are sold in various quality levels. LOOK at fishing line to determine its quality levels, which include:
- Exceptionally Strong
- Quite sturdy and strong
- Decently strong
It is recommended to only use the strongest quality line available, as it will degrade much slower thus providing a higher chance of a successful catch. Exceptional quality fishing line is available at Flimgrimy's Fishing Finds in Mist Harbor in the form of a spool of thin silver wire.
If a line snaps while a fish is still hooked and before it has been reeled in completely, anything attached to the rod - line, lure, and sinker - will be lost in the process.
Filleting Fish
Fish can be filleted using CUT MY <FISH> WITH MY <WEAPON>, but a skill check is required to produce a successful fillet. Factors impacting fillet success include:
- Fishing skill level
- Weapon type, with a dagger style weapon increasing success.
- Weapon description: the KNIFE noun and FILLET adjectives provide a bonus.
- Weapon enchant level provides a bonus, with a 10x enchant providing the greatest bonus.
Therefore, a 10x dagger style weapon with the description of "fillet knife" will provide the greatest bonus.
Fish fillets can then be cooked over a suitable fire or used as an ingredient in the various cooking craft systems. See the locations table for information on the locations of cooking fires.
Fishing Perks
Fishing perks are granted as skill level increases. Perks are available under the FISH PERK verb and include:
- Fishbane: Fish stamina falls faster when pulling in a line or struggling against a fish.
- Reel Expertise: Pulling in a line or struggling against a fish strains your fishing line less.
- Angler's Eye: You will see additional information when using FISH SENSE.
- Lucky Lure: You have an increased chance to find higher quality fish.
- Goliath Seeker: Your catches have an increased chance to be heavier.
- Deft Knife: You have an increased chance to successfully fillet fish.
Activating a fishing perk is done via FISH PERK ACTIVATE {x} {y}, with {x} representing the perk number from the above list and {y} representing an available fishing perk slot. One perk slot is awarded at fishing level 10, with an additional perk slot awarded at level 25.
Legacy Fishing System
The original fishing system involved manipulating fishing equipment as the means of catching fish at designated fishing locations.
Bonus Checks
The first set of checks determine the rarity of fish. There are 5 tiers of rarity:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Very rare
- Legendary
Tiers 1 through 4 aren't to difficult to come by, but to get tier 5 fish, more research and an understanding of the system is required to be successful. It's possible to catch a legendary fish without meeting all bonuses and hitting a great random roll, but you'll have a much easier time if you can meet 3 of the 4 bonus criteria.
There is a seasonal bonus, it's better to fish in the spring and summer. Fall is neutral. Winter has a penalty. (Given seasons aren't the same across the world, these seasons are reflected on the United States.)
There are bonuses to fishing during certain hours of the day; it's not random. It also doesn't look at time zones, it's just a generic time of day that is the best time to fish.
There are bonuses for the area (is it a good/hot spot). This is another aspect to discover on your own. This also applies to catching lobsters.
The lure has a bonus as long as it's used in the right depth of water. If you catch a tier 5 fish, you used the lure at the right depths.
Then there is just a random element entirely for those that don't know what they are doing.
Reeling it In
Once the fish is on your line, there are a new set of checks.
The only stat that is used is Strength.
The fish's strength is determined by the phase you're in. Did you just catch it? Is it wearing down? A fish just hooked is strong. Bigger fish are harder to catch from having an inherited strength bonus.
There are some random elements to both the fisherman and the fish here as well. Think of these as "critical catches." But it also helps those who don't have strength or aren't waiting to tire the fish out.
Snapping a Line
Too much slack is a huge penalty and will result in a warning message. Learn what is good enough.
Reeling in too early has a bigger chance to snap a line.
Leaving the fish on the line longer tires the fish out, but it also weakens the line.
The Catch
The fish that was caught on the line was determined at first bite. There are 5 tiers of rarity for fish. There are 3 depths. Each depth has the 5 tiers.
Fishing now tracks total fish caught, as well as which tier it came from.
Cooking
Caught fish can be cut into fillets using CUT MY FISH WITH MY <WEAPON>. Heavier fish may produce more than one fillet. These fillets can then be cooked over a suitable fire or as an ingredient in the various cooking craft systems. See the below table for information on the locations of cooking fires.
