The title system is the system that controls the use of prename, postname, and cultural identifiers. When looking at a character, the fields show up as follows: 

You see [prename] Mitch O'Saurus, the [postname].
He appears to be a [culture] [race].

To access a character's title options, use the TITLE (verb).

Prename Titles

The primary set of prename titles are attained by achieving certain characters levels in GemStone. In the past, only the Lord and Lady titles existed upon reaching level 20, and achieving this status, which was referred to as Titling, was considered a significant accomplishment. Often, when a character titled an announcement would be made on the 'Amunet' which was followed by many congratulations from fellow players, and at times celebration.

Present day GemStone finds a more expanded title system, but also a lessening of the importance associated with titling.

CHE Officer Titles

Officers of the Co-operative Houses of Elanthia are granted prename titles that match their position. Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Event Planner, Bartender and Arbiter are examples of such titles.

Renowned

Characters who had earned enough experience for level 160 in Gemstone III were bestowed the title of Renowned Lord or Renowned Lady in preparation of the Gemstone IV conversion that would make the character level 100 after the conversion. This title was only granted prior to the conversion taking place and is no longer able to be earned or bestowed to new characters post-conversion.

Specially-granted Titles

Characters can sometimes be granted special prename and postname titles through participation in storylines, quests, and/or events. The different types of titles, as well as some of the existing titles are listed below.

Custom

Custom titles are personalized titles made up by a player for their character. They are sometimes available at festivals and pay events and are a delayed service.

General Title Guidelines

Custom titles can be tricky to navigate, but here are some guidelines that will hopefully make the process clearer and easier for players and GMs alike:

  • Custom titles may not grant or imply any sort of authority within any region, city, or officially recognized organization. Examples of this would be King, Mayor of Solhaven, Grand Magister of the Hall of Mages, etc.
  • Custom titles cannot emulate another class or profession. For example, it would not be appropriate for a warrior to request “Great Wizard” as a title.
  • Custom titles cannot copy preexisting titles that are awarded through in-game means.
  • Custom titles cannot copy unique or special titles possessed by Elanthian historical figures or non-player personas.
  • Custom titles should not be considered exclusive to the player as other players may end up requesting the same title in the future, whether intentionally or coincidentally.
  • Custom titles should avoid references to the Arkati and/or Lesser Spirits due to the potential for mechanical conflicts. For example, it would be an inappropriate conflict for a player to select a title such as “Servant of Lorminstra” and then convert their Arkati affiliation mechanically to Luukos further down the road.
  • Custom titles should not make reference to player-run organizations since players can depart or change such organizations at their will, and it would be inappropriate to have a title referencing a PRO they are not a part of.
  • The decision as to whether a custom title is acceptable falls first with the GM handling your title, then ultimately with QC. A GM will not submit a title to QC that they believe is a violation of guidelines, and QC's final decision is independent of the handling GM's initial decision.

Postname-Specific Guidelines

  • Postnames may incorporate nickname-style titles such as The White Wolf as long as the nickname is appropriate for the Elanthian game world. Nicknames are commonplace in both the fantasy genre as well as the real world. Nicknames from popular media should be avoided even if they are technically in-genre.
  • Custom titles of an occupational nature should be postname titles, not prenames.

Prename-Specific Guidelines

  • Prename titles should avoid occupational terms since they are generally not formal terms of address. The fact that there are some existing prename titles available that are occupational in nature cannot be used to justify an exception to this guideline.
  • Some terms can blur the line between a term of address and an occupational term. If you are absolutely unsure where a term falls, it doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion or seek guidance from QC.
  • Prename titles should be short – ideally, two words or less.
  • Prenames are ideally reserved for nicknames that directly flow into the real name (i.e., Big Bob) or, in the case of nouns/professions, are already accepted as prenames (i.e., Chef Bob, or The Intrepid Bob). Otherwise prenames should be reserved for formal terms of address (i.e., Lord / Lady) and the postname should handle the actual nicknames (i.e., Lord Bob the Stalker Extraordinaire).

Crimson Legion

Any Vaalor elf with full citizenship in Ta'Vaalor has the opportunity to enlist in the Crimson Legion Reserves, the official army of Ta'Vaalor. Members of the Legion have access to a prename and a postname title, based on their current rank:

Titles can be earned by reaching certain achievements in the Settlement of Reim.

Open Sea Adventures

Sailing the high seas using the Open Sea Adventures system allows access to several titles.

SimuCoin Private Properties

Purchasers of SimuCoin private properties will receive a property-related custom postname title (e.g. Master of Kobold Woods Manor).

Temporary

Events (often paid quests) can grant a temporary prename title. The circumstances vary based on event. Temporary titles will only last until the character logs out.

Adventurer's Guild Titles

Like profession titles, the titles awared through the Adventurer's Guild are postname titles. Unlike profession titles, Adventurer's Guild titles are earned based on the number of specific tasks completed or based on how many bounty points a character earns. Failures count against the total. For example, someone with 500 escorts completed, but 15 failed, will have to complete 15 more escorts successfully before attaining the Bodyguard title.

Completing various Artisan skill tasks will earn you different artisan skill titles.

Skill-based Titles

Many skill-based postname titles are available. Generally, these are earned by training a skill or set of skills to a given level, but there are some exceptions. Skill-based titles are often limited by profession; even if an Empath trains the necessary 100 ranks of Brawling, he or she cannot have the title of Pit-Fighter.

Deity Titles

Given appropriate devotion, clerics and paladins can earn a postname title suffix "of <deity>". This suffix can be used with profession and skill-based titles, and is earned with 40 ranks of Spiritual Lore, Religion. They are listed in the title system (and the table below) as "Cleric of" or "Paladin of". This must be enabled via SET ShowDeityTitle ON, not through an option on the TITLE (verb).

Premium Titles

Access to a selection of Premium titles can be purchased for 600 premium points from the disheveled resident NPC who wanders around Mist Harbor. Once purchased, all titles are accessible to all characters on that account, no matter if account stays as a Premium, or reduces to a Standard, subscription.

Culture and Titles

One section of the TITLE verb appears to offer various cultures as a title option. Unlike the other title options, these are not temporary titles! Choosing a culture here as a title will convert your character to that culture! This is a semi-permanent decision that requires a special item available only through SimuCoins or as a rare prize in (paid) Quests.

Platinum Titles

Characters in Gemstone Platinum can earn custom titles as they gain experience.

1) One Postname title will be granted to any character acquiring level 60.
2) One Prename title will be granted to any character acquiring level 80.
3) One Prename or Postname title will be granted to any character acquiring level 100.
4) Titles need to be sensible, in genre, and not out of character. No asking for nobility or one that suggests a particular official authority. (I.e.; no Baron Bob the Ruler of Wehnimer's Landing, or Animagus John the Half-Blood Prince, etc.)
5) Please provide a few options with your submission, just in case your first choice does not get approved. This will help in processing your request as fast as possible, and alleviate the back and forth e-mails. And please only submit second, third, etc, choices that you really want, because if your first choice isn't approved, we'll go down the list in order. Most of all, we want you to be happy with what you've chosen.
The format for titles is as followed: (Prename) (Your Name) (Your Last Name, if you have one) the (Postname). The is a static part of the system, so you need to work with it in your Postname titles.
