Title system

The title system is the system that controls the use of prename titles, postname titles, appendable titles, and cultural identifiers. When looking at a character, the fields show up as follows:

You see [prename title] Firstname Lastname the [postname title] [appendable title].
He appears to be a [culture] [race].

To access a character's title options, use TITLE. TITLE SHOW previews the current displayed title as it appears to others, and TITLE LIST allows viewing of accessible or currently available titles. This verb is also used to clear a current title by TITLE CLEAR [title].

Prename titles appear before a character's name when LOOKing at them. They also are visible when seeing characters in a room, and when a character moves room to room. Postname titles appear after a character's name when LOOKing at them.

Appendable titles appear after a character's postname title to further append how it reads. Appendable titles are typically only available via specific systems or skills, such as citizenship titles and deity-aligned titles (for clerics and paladins). As with postname titles, append titles are only visible when LOOKing at a character. Toggling use of a selected appendable title is done via TITLE APPEND. Appendable titles

Cultural titles typically appear immediately before or after a character's race. Some races have the option of displaying their culture in a slightly different way, such as elves who have selected a culture associated with one of the five elven Houses. Unlike other options in the title system, cultural titles cannot be changed at will once a culture is selected. The title system has expanded significantly over the years. There are now a wide variety of titles linked to different systems such as citizenship and society, as rewards for hitting milestones in pay event games, and even fully custom titles that players can purchase via Premium points or win as rare prizes.

System-Based Titles

System-based titles are automatically accessible via game systems.

Level-Based Titles

Level-based titles are the primary prename titles available to characters and are accessed via TITLE LIST PRENAME. They are attained by achieving specific levels in game. Prior to the GemStone IV conversion, only the Lord and Lady titles existed upon reaching level 20, and achieving this status, which was referred to as Titling, was considered a significant accomplishment. The present day game finds a more expanded title system but also a lessening of the importance associated with titling.

Titles prior to level 20 are only available during those levels. Titles from level 20 onward are always available once they have been attained.

Culture Titles

One section of the title system offers various cultures as a title option. Unlike the other title options, cultural titles cannot be freely changed! Choosing a culture here as a title will convert your character to that culture, allowing access to that culture's title and removing access to all other cultural title options. This is a semi-permanent decision that requires a special item available only through SimuCoins or as a rare prize in (paid) Quests to change.

Very rarely, a free use of a culture reset is issued when new cultures become available to a character's race. Past examples of this include the introduction of Survivors and Castaways of Caligos Isle following the conclusion of Ebon Gate's 2021 run and the introduction of Evashir as a new culture for dark elves in 2023.

Available cultural titles are dependent on a character's race. They are accessed via TITLE LIST CULTURE. While some cultural titles are available to more than one race, most are race-specific. A small handful of cultures also provide access to expanded language system options, such as the Tehir language for humans and half-elves who select the culture or the Dhe'nar language for Dhe'nar dark elves and Khanshael dwarves.

After selecting a culture, the cultural title can be displayed or hidden via FLAG or SET SHOWCULTURE [ON/OFF].

In most cases, the cultural title appears immediately before or after the race when LOOKing at a character. Certain races have additional options for displaying their culture. Elves that have selected either the Ardenai, Illistim, Loenthra, Nalfein or Vaalor cultures and dark elves that have selected the Faendryl culture can choose to display their House name immediately after the character's surname. This is done via FLAG or SET SHOWCLTRSURNAME [ON/OFF]. The character must have a surname and must also display the surname (FLAG or SET SHOWLASTNAME [ON/OFF]) in order to display the House name in this way.

Society Titles

Unique postname titles are available for those who are members or masters of the different societies in game. Each society has its own titles and criteria for accessing them. Due to the nature of the society, titles associated with the Council of Light are only visible to other members when displayed. They are accessed via TITLE LIST SKILL.

Adventurer's Guild Titles

Titles awared through the Adventurer's Guild are postname titles. They are earned based on the number of specific tasks completed or based on how many bounty points a character earns. Failures count against the total. For example, someone with 500 escorts completed, but 15 failed, will have to complete 15 more escorts successfully before attaining the Bodyguard title. They are accessed via TITLE LIST BOUNTY.

Titles can be earned by reaching certain achievements in the Settlement of Reim. Except for the temporary title, they are accessed via TITLE LIST UNIQUE.

Deity Titles

Given appropriate devotion, clerics and paladins can earn a postname append title "of <deity>". This append title can be used with profession and skill-based postname titles, and is earned with 40 ranks of Spiritual Lore, Religion. They are listed in the title system (and the table below) as "Cleric of" or "Paladin of". This must be enabled via SET ShowDeityTitle ON, not through an option on the TITLE verb.

Skill-Based Titles

Many skill-based postname titles are available. Generally, these are earned by training a skill or set of skills to a given level, but there are some exceptions. Skill-based titles are often limited by profession; even if an Empath trains the necessary 100 ranks of Brawling, he or she cannot have the title of Pit-Fighter.

Storyline Titles

Some titles are awarded to characters based on their involvement in storylines or extended roleplay in the world of Elanthia.

Town Appointment Titles

Some titles are awarded based on a character's appointment to a public official role for a town or city. These positions may have involved an election, and criteria for serving in those roles may vary significantly from region to region.

Imperial Titles

Several organizations within the Turamzzyrian Empire have titles that can be awarded to a character based on their extended roleplay. Some are linked to a chivalric military order and typically require swearing fealty to one of the ruling houses. Depending on the specific chivalric rank, they may allow the character to establish their own chivalric order. Others are tied to civil service or magical expertise.

Crimson Legion Titles

Any Vaalor elf with full citizenship in Ta'Vaalor has the opportunity to enlist in the Crimson Legion Reserves, the official army of Ta'Vaalor. Members of the Legion have access to a prename and a postname title, based on their current rank. Rank promotions are awarded in game based on extended character roleplay.

Palestra Titles

Any Faendryl dark elf interested in walking the Path to Palestra may participate in one of the Palestra Trials whenever they are held. Those characters who successfully complete the trials is awarded a rank based on their performace. Characters participating across multiple trials may increase their rank this way.

Special Use Titles

Some titles are only available for special uses or are otherwise unique. They may be linked to a subscription tier purchase, CHE membership, or a private property purchased via SimuCoins. Some may be temporary in nature, while others may be awarded for unique legacy situations.

Temporary Titles

Events (including pay event activities) can grant a temporary prename title. The circumstances vary based on event. Temporary titles will only last until the character logs out. When the character logs back in, the temporary title will be cleared and replaced by the character's previously set title. A temporary title can be manually cleared by using TITLE SET to change the character's title to another available title. Once changed, the temporary title is lost unless the criteria to acquire it is met again.

CHE Officer Titles

Officers of the Co-operative Houses of Elanthia are granted pre- and postname titles that match their position. Chairman, Treasurer, Secretary, Event Planner, Bartender and Arbiter are examples of such titles. For full information including the criteria for changing Officer titles, see the CHE Officer Guide. Subscription Titles

Premium

Access to a selection of pre-written Premium titles can be purchased for 600 premium points from the disheveled resident NPC who wanders around Mist Harbor. Once purchased, all titles are accessible to all characters on that account, no matter if account stays as a Premium, or reduces to a Standard, subscription. Some titles vary between male and female characters. Once purchased, the pre-written Premium titles are accessed via TITLE LIST PREMIUM.

Platinum

Characters in Platinum were able to earn custom titles as they leveled. One custom postname title was available at level 60, one custom prename title was available at level 80, and one additional custom pre- or postname title was available at level 100. Titles were subject to all the requirements for any custom title.

Custom Titles

Custom titles are personalized titles made up by a player for their character. They may be either pre- or postname titles. They are sometimes available at festivals and pay events and are a delayed service. They are also available via Premium points. Custom titles are accessed via TITLE LIST UNIQUE.

General Title Guidelines

Custom titles can be tricky to navigate, but here are some guidelines that will hopefully make the process clearer and easier for players and GMs alike:

• Custom titles may not grant or imply any sort of authority within any region, city, or officially recognized organization. Examples of this would be King, Mayor of Solhaven, Grand Magister of the Hall of Mages, etc.
• Custom titles cannot emulate another class or profession. For example, it would not be appropriate for a warrior to request "Great Wizard" as a title.
• Custom titles cannot copy preexisting titles that are awarded through in-game means.
• Custom titles cannot copy unique or special titles possessed by Elanthian historical figures or non-player personas.
• Custom titles should not be considered exclusive to the player as other players may end up requesting the same title in the future, whether intentionally or coincidentally.
• Custom titles should avoid references to the Arkati and/or Lesser Spirits due to the potential for mechanical conflicts. For example, it would be an inappropriate conflict for a player to select a title such as "Servant of Lorminstra" and then convert their Arkati affiliation mechanically to Luukos further down the road.
• Custom titles should not make reference to player-run organizations since players can depart or change such organizations at their will, and it would be inappropriate to have a title referencing a PRO they are not a part of.
• The decision as to whether a custom title is acceptable falls first with the GM handling your title, then ultimately with QC. A GM will not submit a title to QC that they believe is a violation of guidelines, and QC's final decision is independent of the handling GM's initial decision.
• The format for titles is as followed: (Prename) (Your Name) (Your Last Name, if you have one) the (Postname). The is a static part of the system, so you need to work with it in your custom titles.

Postname-Specific Guidelines

• Postnames may incorporate nickname-style titles such as "the White Wolf" as long as the nickname is appropriate for the Elanthian game world. Nicknames are commonplace in both the fantasy genre as well as the real world. Nicknames from popular media should be avoided even if they are technically in-genre.
• Custom titles of an occupational nature should be postname titles, not prenames.

Prename-Specific Guidelines

• Prename titles should avoid occupational terms since they are generally not formal terms of address. The fact that there are some existing prename titles available that are occupational in nature cannot be used to justify an exception to this guideline.
• Some terms can blur the line between a term of address and an occupational term. If you are absolutely unsure where a term falls, it doesn’t hurt to get a second opinion or seek guidance from QC.
• Prename titles should be short – ideally, two words or less.
• Prenames are ideally reserved for nicknames that directly flow into the real name (i.e., Big Bob) or, in the case of nouns/professions, are already accepted as prenames (i.e., Chef Bob, or The Intrepid Bob). Otherwise prenames should be reserved for formal terms of address (i.e., Lord / Lady) and the postname should handle the actual nicknames (i.e., Lord Bob the Stalker Extraordinaire).

Private Property Titles

Some private property owners may have a property-related postname title (e.g. Master of Kobold Woods Manor). These are mostly available for a SimuCoin private property that has been purchased via the SimuCoin store. Private properties acquired via other means, including in-game auctions, do not typically include a title. They are accessed via TITLE LIST UNIQUE.

Contest and Quest Titles

Some titles have been awarded for participation in once-off contests or quests. They are typically accessed via TITLE LIST UNIQUE.

Some of the newer attuning pets give titles to the owner upon attunement. In some cases, this is only true if the pet summoning device is found in a game as opposed to purchasing it. They are accessed via TITLE LIST UNIQUE.

Legacy Titles

Characters who had earned enough experience for level 160 in Gemstone III were bestowed the prename title of Renowned Lord or Renowned Lady in preparation of the Gemstone IV conversion that would make the character level 100 after the conversion. This title was only granted prior to the conversion taking place and is no longer able to be earned or bestowed to new characters post-conversion.
